PUZZLE FANS!

⚙️ CHAIN REACTION

Today’s cartoon takes us inside the TAKE A SPIN bicycle shop, where business is booming and the owners are making room for even more bikes. After opening up the space next door, they’re discussing where the e-bikes can go while at the same time considering another location for rentals. Between the expansion plans, the packed racks, and now rentals being added to the mix, it’s easy to see why this growing business needs a little more room to roll.

➤ PLANS IN HAND

The man wears a cap with his hair pulled back into a ponytail and has a goatee. He’s dressed in a short-sleeve shirt with the TAKE A SPIN logo centered on the front and bicycle shorts while holding the expansion plans. The plans read TAKE A SPIN STORE EXPANSION, with his finger obscuring a couple of the letters.

➤ TALKING RENTALS

The woman wears a similar cap with her hair pulled back into a ponytail, a short-sleeve shirt with the TAKE A SPIN logo, and bicycle shorts. She holds one corner of the plans while pointing out a possible location across town for their rental operation.

➤ ROOM TO ROLL

The expanded shop has an exposed cinder-block opening leading into a large space filled with different styles of bicycles, including more bikes on an upper shelf. In the window, WE’RE EXPANDING! appears in reverse.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was an 11-letter anagram that solved into a “5” + 6 layout. Saturday’s puzzle greeted us with a word in quotes, letting us know right away that some wordplay would be involved. It didn’t take a whole lot of effort to track down the answer, though. A quick read of the cartoon and glance at the letter layout made bicycles the obvious theme, and “WHEEL” was my first guess for the opening word. Moving on to the clue words, the two five-letter words ended up being the hardest part of today’s puzzle. They were well scrambled and took significantly longer than their six-letter counterparts. Once all four were solved and “WHEEL” was crossed out of the layout, ESTATE was no trouble to see in the remaining letters and brought this one to a finish. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the talk of a possible rental location, along with the expansion plans in the man’s hands, pointing us toward REAL ESTATE, with “WHEEL” providing the wordplay for the final answer.
