WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

✂️ Locks of Luck

Today’s cartoon takes us inside a newly opened salon where a stylist is busy with her very first customer. As the haircut gets underway, her client congratulates her on the new business, giving the stylist a chance to enjoy a moment she has worked very hard to achieve. With her longtime dream finally becoming real and her first big moment underway, it’s easy to see why this appointment has her beaming.

➤ CHAIR APPARENT

The customer is seated in a traditional barber-style chair with a metal footrest. Her hair appears wet, and a salon cape covers most of her body, while her exposed knees suggest she is wearing either shorts or a skirt.

➤ SHEAR AMBITION

The stylist has a tall swept up haircut with sides slicked back. She wears a short-sleeve V-neck dress with mid-calf lace-up boots. Three stud earrings run up her ear above a hoop in the lobe. She holds a section of hair in her right hand while cutting it with scissors in her left.

➤ CUTTING-EDGE DECOR

The salon window reads GRAND OPENING CUTTING LOOSE in reverse. A large mirror hangs at the styling station with four exposed vanity-style bulbs running along the top. On the counter are a spray can of hair product, a comb, and a hair dryer fitted with a diffuser.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was an 8-letter anagram that solved into a 5 + 3 layout. Our first puzzle of the workweek was pretty cut and dry. A quick look at the cartoon clued me into the fact that scissors would somehow play into the answer, and with all four clue words solved at a good clip, the J and Y gave me JOY, leaving SHEAR to make this one a blowout. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the dialogue exchange showing how happy the stylist was to start her new salon, along with the action lines around the scissors, with SHEAR giving us the haircut wordplay on the familiar phrase SHEER JOY.
