WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE FANS!

🌱 A Lawn Time Coming

Today’s cartoon takes us outside a home, where a crew is hard at work rolling out a new lawn for a pair of happy homeowners. As the job nears completion, the couple is clearly pleased with how everything has turned out. They thank the foreman for fitting them in, and he assures them that even though his team stays busy, they always aim to please. With a confident crew and results already turning heads, it’s not hard to see why getting on their schedule takes a little patience.

➤ HAPPY HOMEOWNERS

The woman wears her hair in a ponytail and is dressed in a short-sleeve shirt and pants. Beside her, the man has short curly hair, glasses, a short-sleeve shirt, and pants with cuffed hems at the ankles. Both appear pleased with the new lawn, while a small dog stands near the doorway with its tail wagging.

➤ THE SOD FATHER

The foreman wears a broad-brimmed hat, a goatee, a dark T-shirt with a smiley face on it, work gloves, and pants. He stands facing the couple and is explaining the delay.

➤ ROLL MODELS

In the yard, two crew members are working from the ground, rolling out sod with motion lines showing the work in progress. Another worker is at a flatbed gathering more rolls from a stacked load. The front lawn shows pieces already fitted into place, while trees frame the background.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 14-letter anagram that solved into a 6 + “3” + 5 layout. What a TURF one this one turned out to be. After a lighter week of solves, our weekend finisher more than made up for it. To get things rolling, it was apparent from the cartoon and dialogue that grass would somehow be involved. With no guesses coming to mind, I figured it best to let the clue letters do the heavy lifting. Speaking of the clue words, they weren’t about to roll over for anyone and really stood their ground. I’d hedge a bet they were the toughest ones we’ve had so far this year for a Sunday. But with the task complete, the D and O up front with the S nearby gave me SOD for the grass term. After thinking about the foreman’s dialogue and the idea that his company was worth the wait, HIGHLY “SOD” AFTER popped into my mind to put this one to bed. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the action lines around the rolls of SOD, along with the foreman’s dialogue indicating the company was worth waiting for, with “SOD” replacing SOUGHT for the wordplay portion of the familiar phrase.
