One runner spots a woman who catches his eye and finds a clever excuse to strike up a conversation. She’s clearly delighted by the attention, even if she tries not to show quite how much. Around them, the rest of the crowd is focused on preparation for the many miles ahead. Sometimes the most memorable part of race day has nothing to do with crossing the finish line.

The two featured runners almost resemble Jumble Jeff and Kathy, although that could simply be coincidence. The man wears wraparound sunglasses, a sweatband, a T-shirt, a race bib, and a sports watch on his right wrist. The woman sports a visor, a short-sleeved T-shirt, and a race bib.

➤ TIP OF THE HAT?

Up front is another pair of runners wearing bib numbers 19 and 54. Together they immediately bring to mind 1954, the year Jumble was first introduced. Two other runners display bib numbers 2008 and 2017.

➤ READY… SET… ROMANCE!

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a “5” + 5 layout. Today’s solve ended up being a pace of cake. My heart did skip a beat when I saw the quotes in the layout, but it turned out that it wasn’t overly difficult to decipher. Looking at the anagram in reverse, the R, C, and E together brought RACED to mind. Once those letters were removed, “HEART” was easily plucked from the remaining letters, letting this happy couple cross the finish line together. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudge was where she accidentally said she’d love that before quickly correcting herself, showing that her “HEART” was the one doing the racing—not her legs.
