CARTOON ANSWER:

MANY MOONS AGO

WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🪐 RING LEADER

Today’s cartoon takes us into a classroom, where a lesson about Saturn and its many moons has sparked a little curiosity among the students. The teacher is discussing how astronomers have been discovering natural satellites around the ringed planet for centuries, while one student seems especially interested in how those early observations were even possible. To answer his question, astronomers in the 1600s relied on some of the first telescopes ever built, which were far less powerful than the equipment used today. Even so, they were able to spot Saturn’s largest moon and begin unlocking the secrets of the solar system. That discovery happened so long ago, a lot of nights have come and gone since then.

➤ PROFESSOR OF PLANETS

The teacher is standing at the front of the classroom wearing a short-sleeved collared shirt, pants, and a belt. He has glasses and thinning hair parted to the left. One hand is extended toward a large illustration of Saturn while he explains the lesson to the class.

➤ QUESTION ORBIT

One student with shaggy hair raises a question about how astronomers could see Saturn’s moons so long ago. He appears to be wearing a short-sleeved collared shirt and is seated among three other students, all facing the front of the room.

➤ SATURN TAKES CENTER STAGE

The classroom display is dominated by a large diagram of Saturn surrounded by its rings and numerous moons, also known as natural satellites. The terms moon and natural satellite are often used interchangeably when describing objects that orbit a planet.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 12-LETTER ANAGRAM that solved into a 4 + 5 + 3 LAYOUT. This one solved a little easier than I expected it to. The moment I saw Saturn surrounded by all those little circles, I had a feeling that MOONS would probably be part of the answer. With all the clue letters written out, the familiar phrase instantly drifted into orbit. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the teacher’s explanation that the discovery took place back in the 1600s, giving us the AGO portion of the phrase, while the illustration itself showed Saturn surrounded by MANY MOONS. Put those clues together and MANY MOONS AGO was written in the stars.
