The final answer was a 15-letter anagram that would solve into a 10 + 5 layout. The size of the layout matched what we’ve come to expect from a Sunday puzzle, where pretty much anything can happen, but this one never really launched into true stunt territory. A quick read of the cartoon sentence and dialogue tipped me off that he had been made some kind of OFFER, but the first half of the solve remained in neutral. Once OFFER was pulled from the mix, the remaining letters still were not showing me much of anything. However, what looked like an -ING suffix narrowed it just enough for ATTEMPT to become clear once all the T’s came into focus. From there, fitting the pieces together brought everything in for a smooth landing. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the sign hinting that this would not be Daredevil Dave’s first time ATTEMPTING the feat, while the huge guaranteed payday helped steer us toward OFFER.
