CARTOON ANSWER:

BAD TIMING
WELCOME BACK
PUZZLE PLAYERS!

⏱️ TICK GLITCH

Today’s cartoon brings us trackside where we see a couple of runners catching their breath after a hard effort. One feels like he just put down his fastest run yet, while the other is already wondering if it was enough to qualify for the next meet. Off to the side, the coach is staring down at his stopwatch, tapping it and trying to get it to cooperate. The athletes are waiting for an answer, the coach is getting nowhere, and the whole moment slips away at exactly the wrong instant.

➤ THE RUNNERS

The first runner is bent over with his hands on his knees, catching his breath after the run. His hair is windblown, and you can see a drop of sweat on the right side of his forehead. He’s wearing a tank top, shorts, and running shoes, with a winged shoe logo on the front of his shirt. The second runner is standing upright with a sweatband across his head and a visible drop of sweat as well. He’s wearing the same track uniform, and is turned toward the coach while asking about the result.

➤ THE COACH

The coach is wearing a snapback hat with the winged shoe logo on the front, along with a T-shirt, shorts, and sneakers. He has a bit of facial hair above his lip and on his chin. The stopwatch is hanging around his neck, and he’s tapping it while looking down at it. The display is stuck on double zeros.

➤ THE BACKGROUND

In the background, the track shows six visible lanes with grass in the middle. Off in the distance, there’s a pole vaulter making an attempt over the bar.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 9-letter anagram that solved into a 3 + 6 layout. This one was an instant solve for me. The answer flowed right off the tongue after reading the cartoon sentence and taking a quick look at the cartoon. If today’s puzzle ticked you off, the broken stopwatch, the coach tapping it, and both runners asking how they did pointed us in the right direction.

🏃 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Stopwatches

➤ When did stopwatches first come into use?
Stopwatches trace back to the early 1700s, when spring-driven mechanical timepieces were developed to measure short intervals more precisely than standard clocks. These early designs laid the foundation for the timing tools used in sports today.
SOURCE
➤ What makes lap timing so useful?
Stopwatches include lap or split functions to track multiple times at once, allowing runners to record intermediate results without stopping the overall clock. This feature became essential for races with multiple laps or competitors being timed simultaneously.
SOURCE
➤ How precise are modern stopwatches?
Modern digital stopwatches can measure time down to hundredths of a second, which is critical in competitive events where finishes are often separated by the smallest possible margins.
