🗺️ ROUTE REVIVAL

Today’s cartoon drops us at a table where Grandpa and Grandma are unfolding a road map that looks like it has been everywhere they have. Grandpa proudly says this old thing has shown them the way many times, while Grandma admits it still looks pretty good even if it may be a little outdated. Their grandson stands between them holding his phone, pointing out that directions practically live in your pocket now. Still, after all those trips and all those creases, that trusty map has held up just fine.

➤ ROAD SCHOLARS

Grandpa sits on the left, bald and wearing glasses with a collared shirt. The grandson stands between them with thick, scruffy hair, a T-shirt, and a smartphone in his left hand. Grandma sits on the right wearing glasses with short-cut hair and an earring visible in her left ear.

➤ THE WELL-TRAVELED MAP

The folded paper map is spread across the table, its creases and grid lines easy to spot after years of being folded and unfolded. In the open box sit two tiny travel landmarks — one the Eiffel Tower and the other the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

➤ A MEMORY ON THE WALL

A framed photo in the background shows grandma and grandpa on one of their trips. They’re standing with mountains behind them, both wearing sunglasses and holding trekking poles.

🧩 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 15-LETTER ANAGRAM that solved into a 2 + 5 + 3 + “5” layout. The length of the layout was a little jaw-dropping, and I honestly wasn’t sure where to begin. While scanning the middle of the layout, I happened upon what looked like WHERE. Once those letters were set aside, WORSE popped into view, and suddenly the rest of the route drew itself. If this one had you driving in circles, our nudges were Grandma mentioning the map was still in great shape, and the map itself showing no obvious signs of wear.

🧭 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Maps

➤ What is often considered the first road map?
The Turin Papyrus Map of ancient Egypt, created around 1160 BC, is often considered the first road map. It shows routes around river bends and mining areas, helping travelers and workers understand how to move through the landscape. Unlike many early maps that focused only on territory, this one actually showed where people could travel.

➤ What is the most expensive map ever sold?
The most expensive map ever sold is the 1507 Waldseemüller Map, known as the “Universalis Cosmographia.” The Library of Congress purchased the only surviving copy for $10 million in 2003. ➤ How many Americans say they could navigate using a compass?
About 76% of Americans say they definitely or probably could navigate using a compass. Confidence varies depending on who you ask.
