Snackidermy

Today’s cartoon drops us into a cluttered study where a hungry taxidermist has called it quits for lunch. He’s planted at his desk, one slice already halfway gone, the next one queued up and ready to go. The pizza box tells the story: grease pooled in the middle, one lonely slice left in the box, and a single crust hanging on for dear life. Behind him, the shelves are lined with stuffed squirrels that look suspiciously like bandmates, a mounted fish rocking glasses, and even a group of mice locked into a serious poker game. Whatever work was happening here earlier is on hold, and judging by the scene, lunch is getting his full attention.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ The Taxidermist The hungry taxidermist is Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. He is wearing a Wilco shirt, suspenders, and looks unshaven with his hair a little unkept. There is a takeout pizza box on the desk that he has nearly finished, grease and cheese all over his belly. What looked like a bag of chips on the desk next to him is actually a bag of stuffing and a needle and thread.

➤ What’s on the Wall Behind him, the taxidermy turns into a full blown band. Five stuffed squirrels sit lined up on a wooden shelf like they are mid set. One has a guitar, one is on keys, one is behind the drums, and two more are holding guitars. Below them, a mounted fish wearing glasses hangs on the wall.

➤ The Poker Game Off to the side, five mice are having a poker game. One mouse wears sunglasses, another holds a cocktail with an olive, one squints suspiciously, and one leans back with his chair pushed away. The last mouse peers over his cards, trying to read the room.

Final Solve

The final answer was a fifteen letter anagram laid out as 8 + 3 + 4. The letter count looked intimidating at first, especially since it was one more than last Sunday’s. But not even halfway through the cartoon sentence, STUFFING was already on my tongue, and once those letters were crossed out, the rest of the answer came together fast. With the way he was cramming slice after slice into HIS FACE, the bag of stuffing on the desk, and every stuffed animal in the room staring back at him, the idea was hard to miss. If this one gave you trouble, it probably wasn’t for lack of clues. There were plenty here to chew on!

About Taxidermy

➤ Where does the word “taxidermy” come from?
The word taxidermy comes from the Greek words taxis meaning arrangement and derma meaning skin. The term showed up in print in the early 1800s, with some credit going to French naturalists writing about preserved animals, though evidence shows it appeared slightly earlier in ornithology texts.
SOURCE
➤ What were early specimens stuffed with?
Early taxidermy was pretty rough by today’s standards. Animals were often stuffed with sawdust, straw, or rags, with little attention paid to anatomy. That led to distorted shapes and even changed how people imagined animals like the dodo for generations.
SOURCE
➤ Are mummies considered taxidermy?
Even though ancient cultures preserved animals and people, mummies are not considered true taxidermy. Mummification was rooted in religious practice, while taxidermy developed out of scientific curiosity and display, using very different techniques and goals.
