Tide and True

Today’s cartoon keeps us offshore, where three oceanographers are tracking something that does not look quite right. Two of them are mid-discussion over a laptop while the third hauls a buoy from the water. The woman points out that the readings are something they have not seen before, and the man responds by pointing to what the data may be showing. Between the instruments, the charts, and the exchange unfolding on deck, it is clear they are not just studying the ocean itself, but trying to keep pace with what it is doing right now.

➤ WESTWARD, HO! — We’re offshore again, and the oil rig in the background looks like the same one from yesterday. Using the sailboat’s position as a reference, it places this crew just west of the rig.

➤ STREAM TEAM — The man and woman are focused on a laptop showing the Gulf Stream as a stitched, flowing pattern across the screen. She’s in a bucket-style hat, he’s in a baseball cap, while the third crew member leans over the port side hauling up a buoy, also sporting a wide-brim bucket hat.

Final Solve

The final answer was an anagram consisting of 13-letters that solved into a layout of 7 + 6. The layout here was absolutely brilliant, and David did a super job keeping the answer tucked away. With the boat, the buoy, and all that water on display, my brain immediately drifted toward ocean-related ideas, but nothing wanted to lock in. The tide changed when I stumbled onto CURRENT leaving EVENTS to surface without issue.

Click-to-Reveal Facts*: THE GULF STREAM

➤ What is the Gulf Stream?
The Gulf Stream is a powerful ocean current that carries warm water from the Gulf of America into the Atlantic. It runs up the eastern coast of the United States and Canada and plays a major role in shaping weather and ocean conditions.
SOURCE
➤ What causes the Gulf Stream?
The Gulf Stream is driven by a massive circular system of currents and winds called an oceanic gyre. It is part of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre, moving warm water north while colder, denser water sinks and flows south along the ocean floor.
SOURCE
➤ How long have we known about the Gulf Stream?
We have known about the Gulf Stream for more than 500 years. Spanish explorers noticed it in the early 1500s, and Benjamin Franklin later became the first to chart its path, recognizing how it could speed up transatlantic travel.
