MINT To Be

Today’s panel drops us into a meeting at the U.S. Mint, where three men are gathered around a large drawing of the new Lincoln cent. One man is at the tripod showing off the design, the seated gentleman is calling the timing perfect, and the fellow up front is holding a prototype. The story behind the new coin centers around President Roosevelt and his push to honor Lincoln with something people would see and handle every day. With the one hundredth anniversary of Lincoln’s birth right around the corner the moment lined up in a way that made the idea feel like the natural thing to do.

Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ Face Value

That appears to be Jumble Jeff up front in the suit and glasses, holding the prototype coin.

➤ Early Impressions

The sketch on the board shows a likeness of Lincoln with the year 1909 in the bottom right of the coin.

Final Solve

The final answer was an eleven letter anagram that arranged into a 2 + 4 + 5 layout. I’ll keep this one short because it didn’t take long. Between the giant penny on the easel, the prototype in Jeff’s hand, and the word PENNY in the caption, the cartoon wasn’t shy about where things were HEADed. With CENTS crossed out, the rest of the letters lined up with ease for today’s punny PAYoff.
