  1. Good Morning, Everyone…. 👽 TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT? 👽

    🎶 It’s a BUTTE-iful morning, ah…I think I’ll go outside for a while…And just smile…🎶 “A Beautiful Morning” – (with apologies to) The Young Rascals 1968 https://tinyurl.com/5697bkjr

👽 I’m TRULY not a Sci-fi fan, but Spielberg steals my heart,
(And that’s my cue to AORTA, which here don’t have a part)…
The mind of Spielberg goes BEYOND, he always does amaze,
He entertains us every time, he sets the screen ABLAZE…
And here today we see him young, fresh-faced, and yes, he’s cute…
The bottom line, this film of his? We called it a REAL BUTTE! 👽

So…A REAL BUTTE… https://tinyurl.com/54cvkzkb If I’m not mistaken, I just used that colloquialism here the other day, but of course in its correct form…a Real “Beaut”. And now I’m wondering…Is that a well-known phrase? Or is it just more of that distinctive vernacular that we NY’ers are so fond (guilty) of using? I’m not sure. But I do know that growing up in the “Garden Spot of the World… https://tinyurl.com/4fyet4ye Brooklyn, USA”, (the clip is funny, but you have to stay with it at least until 1:53)…I heard it used all the time. Mostly about inanimate objects…cars, a boat, or when someone did or said something really off the wall, you’d hear, “Boy, he’s a real beaut” …Anyway, I guess we’ll find out soon enough, by how y’all do with getting today’s solve…

Ok, our words. Once again, we’ve had Close Encounters with them all, but it looks like our anagrams are coming up fresh. And they’re good ones, too. The only little hiccup the Early Birds encountered was with BEYOND. Two of them were going with Nobody…Oo..So close…But no cigar….But once they got over that hill…it was smooth sailing all the way. And as far as the solve goes? Five of them are Brooklynites…enough said. And the others laughed, knowing what “Devils Tower” is. All in all…a BUTTE-iful ending…

So…Here’s the SPIEL, I mean deal. If you’re familiar with the movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, you’ll recall that “Devils Tower”, a BUTTE was the focus of the movie, https://tinyurl.com/463dtvdt which was about an alien encounter. And if you listen to the dialogue between Steven Spielberg and his editor, Michael Kahn, it all comes together. Steven’s thrilled at what he’s seeing… “It’s perfect”! It’s a REAL BUTTE!…But, if you’re not familiar with either the word, or the movie…well…thank God for Google…

Ok, Jeff’s Gems? Looking at our two characters today, who I’ve identified above, you may be inclined to think that the man standing is Steven Spielberg…But keep in mind, this movie was made way back in 1977. And Mr Spielberg looked nothing like he does today…So here’s the two of them, as they looked back then. https://tinyurl.com/466w3k5z And it’s Steven who’s sitting at the flatbed editor, going through the dailies. And you’ll notice his hair…he had more of a DIRECTOR’S CUT back then…

So, There you have it, Folks, Done. Be well, stay safe…and here’s wishing you all a BUTTE-iful day! 👽🙋🏻‍♀️

  2. 🙇🏻‍♂️ He TRULY tried to understand the workings of the AORTA, but it was BEYOND him, and he felt his face go ABLAZE when the Professor belittled him by calling him a REAL BEAUT…🙇🏻‍♂️

♥️ Like AORTA is our artery main, he felt her his lifeline,
His heart ABLAZE with loving her…she TRULY made him shine
She made him feel BEYOND his worth, and cheered him on to boot…
And made him laugh when she’d tell him…”You’re definitely a REAL BEAUT” ♥️

      • …And you found yourself without the B…no wonder it threw you for a loop. “B”esides the fact that it’s not a word! But you’ll often hear people use Enbody, instead of the correct word Embody, so I’m sure you weren’t alone with it today. Thanks for commenting, Michael, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. Be well! 👽🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. Went quickly today. Solution was fun.
Dodgers lost today and are taking the train to NY to meet the Mets tomorrow. Coming into the tough part of the season.
Football started tonight with 2 preseason games and I am thrilled!

    • Well played, Mig. I had a MESA problems, but got it.
Your sports update was succinct. Have a great weekend!

  4. Jumble Jeff picked a great film for Friday the 13th. It got me to thinking about what the other two kinds of encounters are. A gentleman by the name of J. Allan Hynek literally wrote THE book on the subject, and within it was a classification system for close encounters. Spielberg actually hired him as technical advisor during filming of the movie. For his services he was paid a “small fee” and given an uncredited cameo appearance as one of the researchers near the end. He was the gentleman wearing glasses and holding a pipe.

-A close encounter of the first kind is when a UFO is seen but no interaction with the environment is observed.
-A close encounter of the second kind is when physical effects of a UFO are witnessed. (Grass being pressed down, broken branches, animals barking or marks on the ground).
-A close encounter of the third kind is when the presence of “occupants” in or about the UFO are reported.

Others have added to the list, but Dr. Hynek’s work is usually all that’s cited. Enjoy your weekend and take care.

  5. On This Day in History: AUGUST 13th

-(1889) A patent (#408,709) for the first “coin-operated apparatus for telephones” was issued to William Gray of Hartford, CT.

-(1934) Al Capp’s comic strip “L’il Abner” made its debut in newspapers.

-(1961) Construction of the Berlin Wall begins in East Germany.

-(1969) Apollo 11 astronauts enjoyed a ticker tape parade in New York City. Later that evening they were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Richard Nixon at a state dinner in Los Angeles.

-(2016) Michael Phelps wins his 23rd (and final) Olympic gold medal in the men’s 4×100-meter medley relay.

  6. It was an average day at the golf…..er… jumble course today, with speedy anagrams solved. Oh yes, did pause for a minute or two on BEYOND. Knew it was gonna be REAL somethin’….. Saw Angela’s reference to “Too Close For Comfort” and thought that great song was to be featured today….but alas. See you on Saturday morning

  7. This one is strange. Why would extraterrestrials be interested in a butte? So to me the answer REAL BUTTE is weak, so there are lots of shadow solutions, all of which are problematic, including EARL BUTTE, TUBE LATER (someone going to bore a hole in the middle of the tower?), TUBE ALERT , LATE BRUTE, BLUE TREAT (the setting isn’t blue), LUBE TREAT (ETs have saucer trouble?), and so forth, but the one that caught my attention the most, and at first I thought it was the solution, was TRUE TABLE, and I can see why this may be a solution, for TRUE and REAL are close in meaning, and Devil’s tower is a TABLE mountain. Still I thought both TRUE TABLE and REAL BUTTE were strange solutions.

    • Funny you say that, Jim. Someone else mentioned True Table…but I think David picked a REAL winner of a solution…Enjoy your day, Jim. Be safe out there…👽🙋🏻‍♀️

  8. Aorta and Beyond were difficult for me, and I would never have gotten Butte if I hadn’t looked up Devils Tower. It is not a word I am familiar with, though I have heard of Butte, Montana. Like Jim, the first answer I found was True Table, but it didn’t make much sense so I kept looking. Very clever one today. Wishing all a happy weekend.

    • Good Morning, Caroline. Beyond was a bit of an uphill climb for the guys too this morning, but I was happy with it…the “Y” wasn’t placed at the end! 😉 But another True Table? I’m sure Jim’s smiling at that! 😉 Enjoy your day, Caroline. Try to stay cool…🔥🙋🏻‍♀️

    • Hi Caroline. What I found peculiar was the use of SURREAL in the dialogue. REAL was part of the answer and Spielberg was seen editing a film REEL. That’s Freaky Friday stuff if you ask me!

      • The Reel! I hadn’t considered that…Excellent observation! 👏🏻👏🏻! 🙋🏻‍♀️

  9. Good morning. Got the words failed on the cartoon answer. Some bad week. Loved your post Angela and Mike. Especially enjoyed the song choice. Until tomorrow stay well and stay safe.

  10. I was thinking real beaut as well, and didn’t come up w butte, even though I had the available letters. After several days of heat, and a couple days of mild storms,we’re in for a nicer day today and into the weekend in Illinois.

    • You had Real Butte but changed your mind? So CLOSE, Professor! 😉 Enjoy your day, Prof…hopefully we’ll have a bit of a reprieve here this weekend. 👽🙋🏻‍♀️

  11. Soaring so lofty before your eyes
This butte takes all by surprise
    But was nobody heeding?
    The name is misleading
The low down devil is what it implies!

    • Hi Helen…

👽 While a Butte is a hill isolated,
In this movie seems things were just fated…
And it played a strong part,
      Such great cinematic art…
And we watched with our breath truly bated! 👽

        • Hi Helen. I’ve no idea, really. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it spoken about. Plus, I have no command of the language. I suppose the closest equivalent might be mesa, but again, it’s just a guess. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  12. Aorta gave me a throw! That sneaky little 5 letter word took me the longest of the words. Then the solution went True, Blue, oh it’s Butte…. Now how the Heckfire is Butte spelled? I don’t believe I have ever written down butte in my lifetime! And that other guy standing next to Spielberg, I thought for sure must be Hynek. But in looking him up just now, he has a little “pointier” beard. (Is that even a word?) “Project Blue Book” was on TV for one or two seasons, then cancelled. Hynek was pretty much the main focus of that show. Interesting stuff, nevertheless! 👽🛸👽🛸! Have an Outta This World Weekend Folks! 😉

    • Hey Kim. Who knows? Maybe it is Hynek, there is a resemblance…but I don’t know if he’d be in the editing room…Then again???…We are dealing with strange Encounters! 😉 Wishing you a good one too, Kim. Hopefully just one more day of this heat! 🔥🙋🏻‍♀️

      • Pretty sure it’s the editor that you provided the link to! I just thought of Hynek right away, because I knew of him being a consultant on the movie. And yes! Ready to say goodbye to the heat for a few days! Especially the humidity!🥵 Take care!

        • The humidity? …Please…I’m beating my hair down with a stick…and it’s still getting the best of me! I give up…At this point, it’s got a life of its own…Longing for a reprieve, I hope you take care too, Kim. Thank God for Willis Carrier…I can’t imagine where we’d be without him! 🔥🙋🏻‍♀️

          • 🤣🤣🤣 Too funny Angela! Forgive me girl, but Had to look up “William” Carrier, even tho “Carrier” should have been my clue! Anyhow, up popped this Hunky Hockey Player. Then I searched further to find “Willis” Carrier who made AC! I seriously thought I was looking for a guy who invented some powerful hair products! 😂😂😂

            • LOL! Sorry Kim…my bad…well really the auto-correct’s bad…but I should have double checked before hitting send. I fixed it…But not too soon…So, sorry if I sent you on a wild goose chase…God knows in this heat, you don’t need to be running around! 😂🙋🏻‍♀️

            • I just realized I called you Kim. Sorry again, Kimberly. It’s just been that kind of a day…🤦🏻‍♀️…

  13. Tough one for me this morning. I got the anagrams without difficulty but the cartoon answer stumped me completely. Am not familiar with “Close Encounters” nor Devil’s Tower though there is a mountain in Northern California called Black Butte. All I could come up with was “Blue Treat”, which is scary to think I’m getting into Shadow Solution land. Wishing all of you a Good Friday the thirteenth. Don’t forget your rabbit’s foot.🐰

    • LOL! 😂 Shadow Solution Land! Perish the thought! Good Morning, Betty. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 you’re not headed down that path! Wishing you a Good Friday too, Betty…and I always have my Cornicello 🌶 handy! 😉 🙋🏻‍♀️

  15. TRULY was the only word that I instantly solved. The other three took a little effort. For the answer, I guessed BUTTE, but couldn’t remember how to spell it. I tried beute, buete, bute, etc, until I remembered. Then REAL was left. So it was a workout today.

    • Not to worry, Dennis, I’m sure you’ll have a much easier time tomorrow…it’s a good one. Enjoy your day…and stay safe out there…👽🙋🏻‍♀️

  16. I’ve had a good number of people texting me today…somewhat CLIMBING the wall about the solve…And defending the campaign of sorts 😉 for True Table. Granted, a Butte is a tall Mesa, and Mesa, as any X-word puzzle aficionado knows (ad nauseam), brings us to Tableland…which is then defined as a broad, high level region; a plateau.…etc, etc. So, it goes around and around. Well not really a-round, it’s flat…😉 But you get my drift. And even though there may be “some sort” of justification to the reasoning, it’s just not what David had in mind…And it REALly doesn’t suit the question like the REAL solve does….But it’s been quite a while since a solve kicked up this much dirt…And right now, back in Brooklyn? There’re calling this one a REAL BEAUT! 👽🙋🏻‍♀️
