What song to choose to open with? I feel a little miffed…
There’s such a goldmine MEDLEY, and I’d hate to OPPOSE,
The merits of them as a whole…I’ll just pass I suppose…
But how great to AWAKEN and ROTATE thru my mind,
The contents of this puzzle…how thrilling ’twas to find…
This plethora of artistry…it’s great to start the day,
With something so amusing…and just A STONE’S THROW AWAY! 🎸🥁
With all our words being oldies but goodies this morning, and a having a repeat anagram in MISWHY, it was a quick and easy puzzle to play with. But I’m wondering…If one’s not familiar with our characters, will todays’ solution fall upon deaf ears?
Set in a recording studio, today we find ourselves in the company of the esteemed rock group, The Rolling Stones. Left to right, we have…Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, and Keith Richards. Taking time out to have a bite to eat, we see that the garbage can mentioned in our question is very near at hand. And Mick, the face of the STONES is seen THROWing his completed meal AWAY…So in what may just be the easiest solution spelt out on record…the garbage can was...A STONE’S THROW AWAY! And it’s a brilliant play on words…But again, if you don’t recognize the Stones? “Love…In Vain” may be all your efforts…
Ok. Now…We’re gonna “Let It Loose” and enjoy Jeff’s whimsy…This entire cartoon today is golden, and it was almoss enough to have me “Dancing in the Light”. Not only is the art work on point, but the dialogue may be some of the moss creative we’ve ever seen. So I’m making it all eye candy. What’s amazing, is that each character’s words are a direct reference to one of the Stones recordings. Charlie, sitting at his drums, which are emblazoned with the iconic “Tongue and Lip” logo, and wearing a napkin stuffed into his shirt collar, is eating a chicken leg, and saying..”Look, it’s Jumpin’ Jack TRASH”, (too funny), referring to “Jumpin’ Jack Flash. Mick, rolling his eyes and saying,”Don’t start me up”, is referencing “Start Me Up”, and Ronnie, eating a sandwich and saying that it’s so satisfying, (which is hysterical, and a gem in itself), has the honor of alluding to the iconic (“I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”….And then there’s Keith. Sitting, wearing a Jolly Roger T-Shirt, and telling Mick to toss the remnants of his meal since he’s up…And here I paused…And I have to admit that my perfect record of identifying a piece of music may for the first time have me between a “Rock and a Hard Place”. I think it’s“I’m Going Down”but I’m not completely sure. Or could it be “Get Up, Stand Up”?IDK…Well either way, I “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”, so I’m throwing it out there to Jeff or any of our readers…”Can You Hear the Music”? If so…I’m all ears…

There’d be no reason to OPPOSE these dance steps he found deadly…

Once I realized it was the Stones, the answer was pretty easy. I’m familiar with some of the songs referenced but not all.
The clue words were a challenge, and I backed into three – medley, rotate and adrift – with adrift requiring much jumbling on paper.
Hi Caroline.Good Morning. You’re right on the money with your three stumpers. it’s reflected in the poll. And your comment reinforces what i thought as soon as I saw the puzzle this morning. Knowing you’re looking at the Stones, sets the stage for the answer. Not that it’s unsolvable, not at all, but I think it to be a challenge if you’re just doing it off the cuff. But I will say again…IMO, it’s a brilliant solution! Hoping your morning’s going well. 🎸🙋🏻♀️
Good morning. Had a little trouble with the words but persevered. However I don’t feel like spending hours to try and solve the cartoon answer as I have places to go. Now that I see the answer I do believe it saved me a lot of grief by giving up. Until tomorrow stay well.

Hi all – Since AWAKEN was ‘A’ followed by a word, the same trick helped with my hardest word, ADRIFT. I saw THROWN in the answer letters, and that and STONE(S) showed the answer pretty quickly (and made me laugh).
Really, they use it for garbage? I thought they’d gone to a Houston Astros game, and Mick got the idea to bang on it if the next song was played at an off-speed tempo.
If a serf snuck along on the King’s vacation trip by hiding in his chair, would he be a throne’s stowaway?
Angela, the character’s dialog was the funniest part, but I didn’t get Keith’s reference either.

Another funny coincidence for me today – I was looking at a Twitter post this morning that asked everyone to list the first concert they’d ever gone to, and for me it would have been the Rolling Stones, Providence RI, 1964.
“He agreed to join the cruise to the scenic whirlpool on a flight of WHIMSY since it was just a STONE’S THROW AWAY, but found it would have been wiser to OPPOSE it had he known he would AWAKEN from a MEDLEY of songs on his headphones to find himself ADRIFT and beginning to ROTATE toward the center of a maelstrom.”
