WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🪚 FENCE AND SENSIBILITY

Today’s cartoon takes us into a backyard where a couple is watching their new fence take shape. The homeowners have decided to branch out from their old pine fencing and go with premium cedar instead. With hammers pounding, saws buzzing, and the crew hard at work, everything seems to be coming together just as planned. They may have had to dig a little deeper into their pockets, but they’re confident their decision will stand the test of time.

➤ A FENCE-SIBLE COUPLE

The homeowners are smiling ear to ear as their new cedar fence takes shape. He’s confident the investment will hold up for years, while she’s equally pleased with their choice.

➤ HAMMERING HOME THE POINT

On the neighbor’s side, a worker holds a fence board steady with his left hand while hammering with his right, a spare nail tucked in the corner of his mouth. The motion lines around the hammer suggest quite a racket, and the family dog doesn’t look too thrilled.

➤ SAWING TO IT

In the background, another worker wears a backward cap and safety glasses while cutting lumber with a circular saw. The house’s roof edge, finished fence sections, and a tree beyond the yard complete the scene.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 15-letter anagram that solved into a 2 + “4” + 2 + 5 + 2 layout. Unlike that beautiful new cedar fence, the length of the answer layout is what took my breath away. Fortunately, there wasn’t much bark and forth going on when it came to the solve. A quick glance at the scene and noticing the quotation marks in the letter layout had IT “WOOD” BE WORTH IT coming to mind immediately. With all six clue words solved and only a slight stumble on two of them, my hunch was confirmed that I’d hit the nail on the head.

If today’s solve slowed you down, our nudges were the homeowners’ shared belief that spending a little more meant IT WOULD BE WORTH IT, with the specific mention of cedar and all that woodworking in the cartoon giving us “WOOD” for the wordplay.

🪵 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Fencing in America

➤ Why were picket fences traditionally painted white?
Early American homeowners used whitewash, often made from lime and water, to coat wooden fences. The bright white appearance also became associated with tidy, prosperous homes, eventually helping make the white picket fence a familiar symbol of the American Dream.
SOURCE
➤ Why do homeowners often choose cedar over pine for fencing?
Cedar contains natural compounds that resist decay and insects, making it a popular choice for outdoor fences. Untreated pine generally needs additional protection, although pressure-treated pine can also provide many years of service.
SOURCE
➤ What was an important purpose of fences in colonial America?
Fences helped protect vegetable gardens and crops from wandering livestock, including pigs, cattle, and chickens. For colonial families, keeping hungry animals away from valuable food was often far more important than backyard privacy.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click word to reveal its origin)

PICKET

Meaning: A narrow, upright board or pointed stake, commonly used as part of a fence.

So, where did it come from?
The word “picket” has a history that goes well beyond the familiar white fences surrounding American homes. It comes from the French word piquet, meaning a pointed stake, and originally referred to stakes driven into the ground for military purposes, marking positions, or securing horses.

Soldiers used pointed stakes to help protect their positions, while military pickets also served as guards stationed ahead of the main force. Over time, the word found its way into everyday construction, where pickets became the narrow upright boards attached to fence rails.

Eventually, the white picket fence became one of the most recognizable symbols of the traditional American home, representing comfort, security, and a little piece of the American dream. Not bad for something that started out as a pointed stick!
