WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

📉 TRAIL OF TEARS

Today’s cartoon takes us inside a campaign office where a political scandal has thrown the entire operation into chaos. Two staffers stare at the television in disbelief while their colleague handles a phone call bringing even more bad news. It seems volunteers are abandoning ship at an alarming rate, and the campaign is rapidly spiraling into a full-blown disaster. The candidate’s political future now looks bleak, and whatever respect his supporters once had for him is quickly fading away.

➤ BREAKING BAD NEWS

Two campaign staffers stand side by side, staring at a television mounted on the wall. The television says, “BREAKING NEWS: CANDIDATE ARRESTED AT HOME. Caught on camera!” with an image of him being escorted away by authorities.

➤ THE CALL OF DEFEAT

A third staffer sits behind a desk, barely holding a telephone receiver in his right hand. His drooping expression accompanies the latest update about the campaign’s disappearing volunteer roster.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 14-letter anagram that solved into a 3 + 3 + 2 + “6” layout. Our first Friday solve of the new month gets my vote for the most challenging we’ve had in a long, long time! The clue words came quickly, which was just about the only saving grace. With four words to fill in and the final one in quotes, I wasn’t about to start guessing. After studying the cartoon and those weary expressions, I figured the campaign had RUN OUT OF something, but what? All those E’s had me wondering if I’d made a mistake somewhere, until “ESTEEM” finally popped into view to check the box on this one.

If today’s solve slowed you down, our nudges were the staffers’ worried expressions suggesting they had RUN OUT OF STEAM, while their growing doubts of support and the disappearing volunteers showed everyone’s lack of “ESTEEM” for the candidate.

CANDIDATE

Meaning: A person seeking election to public office or being considered for a particular position.

So, where did it come from?
The word “candidate” has a surprisingly colorful history, although the color itself was white! In ancient Rome, men running for public office wore a special toga called the toga candida, which was made especially bright, sometimes using powdered chalk. The idea was to stand out from the crowd while presenting an image of purity and honesty.

The Latin word candidatus literally meant “clothed in white,” and eventually gave us the English word “candidate” around 1600. Interestingly, “candid” comes from the same Latin family, connecting brightness with openness and sincerity. So long before campaign buttons, television ads and political slogans, candidates were already dressing to impress voters.
