WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

👆 NOT A TOUCHY SUBJECT

Today’s cartoon takes us outside, where a group of kids are having a ball playing a game of tag. One girl has just given another a friendly tap on the shoulder, and the chase is about to change direction. Nobody seems the least bit bothered by the sudden switcheroo, and everyone is taking turns being both the pursuer and the pursued. These kids know that when the tables turn, the best thing to do is let the game play out.

➤ TAG, YOU’RE UP!

The two girls take center stage, both wearing short-sleeved shirts and shorts. The girl coming up from behind has her hand on the other girl’s shoulder, with little action lines marking the tag. The newly tagged girl is smiling as she runs, already ready to turn the tables.

➤ THE CHASE IS ON!

Two more kids appear in the background, one on either side of the action, dressed for a day of outdoor play. With everyone on the move, it looks like this game of tag has plenty of running left in it.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 6-letter anagram that solved into a 2 + 2 + 2 layout. Our Tuesday puzzle was a PACE of cake! With the cartoon sentence describing the game as tag, IT immediately came to mind as one of the three small words in the layout. Rather than run around chasing the other two, I let the clue letters do all the legwork. With IT crossed out, SO and BE were quite visible to tag this one as solved.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the girl’s good-natured, SO BE IT attitude about being tagged, while the visual of the tap on her shoulder made her IT.

🌖 That’s A Wrap!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

QUE SERA, SERA

Meaning: Whatever will be, will be. An expression used when accepting that the future is uncertain and some things are simply beyond our control.

So, where did it come from?
Although “Que Sera, Sera” sounds Spanish, its history actually leads back to England. Variations of the phrase appeared as early as the 1400s, when it was used as a family motto expressing the idea that whatever is destined to happen will happen. Interestingly, the wording isn’t considered grammatically correct in standard Spanish, Italian, or French.

The expression received a major boost in 1954 when The Barefoot Contessa featured the words “Che Sara Sara” carved in stone. Songwriter Jay Livingston noticed the inscription and, with his writing partner Ray Evans, turned the idea into “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)” for The Man Who Knew Too Much, the 1956 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Doris Day.

The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became one of Day’s signature hits. Centuries after appearing as a family motto, those three little words had become a worldwide reminder that sometimes the best response to life’s uncertainties is simply to let things be.
