🥶 A CHILLING DISCOVERY
Today’s cartoon brings us to a home where a repairman is checking over a troublesome furnace. The homeowner stands beside him, bundled up and shivering, explaining that the heat keeps coming and going. With the furnace panel open and a flashlight in hand, the repairman takes a closer look and doesn’t seem too optimistic about its condition. For something that’s supposed to keep the house warm, this one isn’t exactly living up to the job.

➤ THE HUMAN ICE CUBE
The homeowner stands with his arms folded, shivering in his sweater. Motion lines around his shoulders and hands, along with a visible puff of breath, show just how cold he is as he describes the furnace’s unpredictable performance.
➤ THE BEARER OF BAD NEWS
The repairman kneels on his right knee, holding a flashlight in his left hand and pointing toward the furnace. Wearing a short-sleeved shirt and a backward cap, he gives the homeowner a grim assessment of its remaining service life.
➤ THE HEAT IS OFF
The furnace appears to be a gas-fired unit, with an exhaust pipe, overhead ductwork, power switch, and fuel line visible. The unit itself rests on blocks above the floor.
🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was an 8-letter anagram that solved into a 3 + 2 + 3 layout. Our Tuesday puzzle was a quick one. In fact, I FLUE right through it! Looking at the cartoon and reading the accompanying sentence, the homeowner’s heating troubles had me thinking the answer would have something to do with temperature. With all four clue words solved and the final letters in place, HOT jumped out first, leaving NOT and SO to patch up the rest.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the unit’s NOT SO HOT performance, as described by the homeowner, along with the visual of him bundled up and shivering in a home that wasn’t particularly HOT at the moment.
