🦍 A GIANT DISAPPOINTMENT
Today’s cartoon takes us inside a baseball stadium, where a coach has the unenviable task of cutting a player from the team. We see our oversized hopeful standing in his pinstripe uniform, glove in hand, trying to plead his case. The problem has nothing to do with his baseball skills. Kong is simply too enormous for the team’s accommodations, although he seems perfectly willing to make whatever adjustments are necessary to fit in. Unfortunately, when you’re built like a skyscraper, even professional teams have a limit on how large a player can be.

🧠 Final Solve
The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a 3 + 7 layout. Our first puzzle of the weekend wasn’t quite a home run, but it turned into one before the final inning was over. Looking at the cartoon, the enormous size difference between Kong and the coach suggested that Kong’s size would play a part in the solution, but I couldn’t quite connect the dots, so I let that pitch go by. With only a little hesitation on the clue words, LEAGUE was the first to step up to the plate. BIG batted second, followed by the S tacked onto LEAGUE to clinch the victory! If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were Kong trying out for the Yankees, putting him in contention for the BIG LEAGUES, while his enormous size supplied the BIG wordplay.

CURVEBALL
Meaning: An unexpected surprise, complication, or challenge that catches someone off guard.
So, where did it come from?
The curveball has been fooling baseball batters since the 1800s, and its beginnings involve an unlikely inspiration: clam shells! Pitcher Candy Cummings claimed he got the idea as a teenager while tossing clam shells at a Brooklyn beach and watching them curve through the air. Fascinated by their unusual flight, he began experimenting with the way he gripped and released a baseball, hoping to make it change direction before reaching home plate.
For four years, Cummings practiced different grips and wrist movements, determined to perfect his unusual pitch. His breakthrough reportedly came in 1867 during a game against Harvard, when batters swung at balls that suddenly curved beyond their bats.
Although Cummings had finally mastered the secret of making a baseball curve, his historic afternoon didn’t end with a victory. On October 7, 1867, Harvard defeated his Brooklyn Excelsiors 18 to 6 at Jarvis Field in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cummings admitted he still couldn’t make the ball curve whenever he wanted, but he had discovered something that would forever change baseball.
Other pitchers eventually learned the technique, although several would later dispute who invented it first. Cummings received baseball’s highest recognition when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939. What began with a handful of clam shells had helped change the game forever!
