The attendant starts running through her options, but it’s clear her customer isn’t overly concerned with what ends up hanging in the window. With enough rolls on the shelves to outfit every room in the neighborhood, hopefully this isn’t the first time the attendant has heard a request like hers. When keeping prying eyes out is the priority, what the drapes are actually made of is beside the point.

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a single 10-letter word. Our final solve of the workweek almost went off without a snag. If it weren’t for the slight hiccup on MOBIL, I mean LIMBO, I probably would’ve had this one sewn up in a jiffy. Once all the clue words were solved correctly, MATERIAL seemed to unfold right before my eyes, and adding IM stitched the whole thing together. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were all those different fabrics giving us MATERIAL, while the customer made it clear that which one she chose was IMMATERIAL.

So, where did it come from?
The story starts long before fabric meant the material hanging in your windows. The word traces back through French to the Latin fabrica, meaning a workshop, craft, construction, or something skillfully made. It came from faber, a craftsman or artisan. In other words, the earliest idea behind fabric was something built.

English adopted fabric in the late Middle Ages, and for centuries it could mean the structure or framework of something — including an actual building. Only later did the word become strongly associated with woven textiles.

That older meaning opened the door to a powerful metaphor. A society could be imagined as something constructed from countless interconnected parts, much as a building is assembled or threads are woven together. Families, neighborhoods, institutions, customs and relationships all become part of its fabric. Damage enough of those connections and we still say the social fabric can fray, unravel, or be torn apart.

So when we talk about the “fabric of society,” we’re carrying around two old pictures at once: something carefully constructed and something woven together. Remove enough pieces or pull enough threads, and the whole thing can begin to come apart.
