The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + “4 + 4” layout.
Our Hump Day puzzle tossed a little wordplay into the mix, but you didn’t need any superpowers to see where it was headed. A quick read of the cartoon sentence and a glance at the partially completed costume on the mannequin brought CAPE to mind as one of the four-letter words in quotes, but without much more to go on, it would be up to the clue words to do the heavy lifting.
With all of them solved in a flash and CAPE removed, the V brought VERY to mind, leaving ABLE to swoop in and finish things off. So, where did it come from?
For years, people had some great explanations for this one. Nine yards was supposedly the amount of fabric needed to make a suit or a Scottish kilt. Others said it came from the length of World War II machine-gun ammunition belts, the sails on old ships, or even concrete trucks. The problem? None of those stories holds up very well once you follow the paper trail.
Researchers eventually found “the full nine yards” being used in an Indiana newspaper in 1907, followed by “the whole nine yards” in 1908 — decades before the World War II explanation could possibly work. Even better, earlier newspapers used “the whole six yards” in much the same way. That little discovery was a big clue: there probably wasn’t anything that actually measured nine yards at all. Six eventually became nine, nine sounded better, and the whole nine yards became the version that stuck.
