🧺 LOAD AND BEHOLD
Today’s cartoon shows us a couple of roommates trying to sort out whether any laundry, if any, is going to get done today. With the washer open and plenty of clothes scattered around, one roommate holds up a piece of clothing and checks to see if a load might be happening. The other seems perfectly content where she is with her laptop, and committing to the chore doesn’t appear to be high on her list. For now, she keeps going back and forth with the thought.

➤ LOAD AND CLEAR
The roommate asking about the laundry is wearing a sleeveless top and shorts. She holds up a single piece of clothing as she checks whether any laundry is going to get done today.
➤ TAKING IT EASY
The woman on the bed has tousled hair and is wearing a T-shirt with a small cartoon creature on the front. Barefoot and surrounded by her clothes, she has her laptop cradled in her lap.
➤ SORT OF A MESS
Clothes are scattered across the bed and floor, including socks, pants, shirts, and towels, with a full laundry basket nearby. In the background is a stacked laundry unit with the dryer on top and washer below, along with a hallway leading to another room.
🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a 5 + 5 layout. Our Saturday solve wasn’t all that hard to wring out. One read of the cartoon sentence and WISHY-WASHY practically rolled off the tongue, making this one an instant solve for me. A quick run through the clue words proved my hunch was spot on, allowing me to fold this one up in a hurry. With today’s puzzle coming together in a flash, something tells me tomorrow’s longer Sunday format might have us TIDE down for a bit. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the woman saying she wasn’t sure whether she would do the laundry, showing her indecisiveness, along with the washing machine and piles of clothes scattered around the room helping steer us toward the familiar phrase.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
ON TENTERHOOKS
Meaning: To be waiting nervously or anxiously for something to happen, especially when you don’t know how things are going to turn out.
How is it used?
You might say you were “on tenterhooks” while waiting for an important phone call, a test result, or some other news you had been expecting.
So, where did it come from?
The expression comes from the old cloth-making process. After wool or linen cloth was washed, it needed to dry without shrinking or becoming creased. The wet cloth was stretched tightly across a wooden frame called a tenter and held in place by small hooks known as tenterhooks. That image of cloth being pulled tight eventually became a way of describing a person stretched tight with nervousness or suspense. Earlier versions of the expression referred to being “on the tenters,” with “on tenterhooks” becoming established centuries ago.
