🏓 MANE EVENT

Today’s cartoon brings us to PLEASANTVILLE HORSE FARMS, where a couple of horses are enjoying a spirited game of ping-pong. With paddles in hoof and the ball flying back and forth, they’ve turned part of the barn into their own little recreation area. With the rancher ready to play and another horse already waiting its turn, there’s no shortage of competition. When these horses want a little friendly fun, they don’t have to wander far from home.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ PADDLE TO THE METAL

Two horses are in the middle of a ping-pong match inside the stable. The horse on the far side has just returned the ball with his paddle, with two teeth showing and his tongue sticking out to the side as he concentrates on the shot. The other horse is positioned in the foreground with his paddle ready as the ball heads his way.

➤ WAITING IN THE WINGS

The rancher stands off to the left holding a paddle and announces that he’s next. He’s an older gentleman with a receding hairline, glasses, and a mustache, and wears a collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up, pants with suspenders, and a handkerchief or rag sticking out of his back pocket. To the right, a neigh-bor leans over the stall divider and adds some comedic relief by telling the rancher to wait his turn.

➤ HOME-COURT ADVANTAGE

A wooden sign in the background identifies the location as PLEASANTVILLE HORSE FARMS, with a horseshoe emblem to the left of the name. The ping-pong table has a wood-plank playing surface matching the stable setting. Wooden stall walls and dividers surround the playing area, including the divider in front of the horse on the right. Knot a detail was missed!

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that solved into a “6” + 6 layout. Our second-to-last puzzle of the workweek didn’t stirrup much trouble. Although the answer had a word in quotes, the wordplay came together pretty quickly in the end. Reading the cartoon sentence, the use of ping-pong immediately brought TABLE TENNIS to mind. With all four clue words solved in a flash, TENNIS looked like it was definitely there. Once those letters were crossed out, TABLE was left, and adding an S to the front was all it took to put this one out to pasture. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the misdirection in the cartoon sentence using ping-pong, another name for TABLE TENNIS, along with the PLEASANTVILLE HORSE FARMS sign and the horses playing inside their enclosure, giving us the visual of a STABLE for the wordplay finish.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH

Meaning: Information that comes directly from the original or most trustworthy source.

So, where did it come from? The expression grew out of British horse racing circles in the 1800s. Bettors were always looking for inside information about which horse was likely to win. A tip from someone close to the horse, such as a jockey, trainer, or stable worker, was valuable. Taking that idea one humorous step further, the most authoritative tip imaginable would come straight from the horse itself.
