CARTOON ANSWER:

“HOLES”
STORY

WELCOME BACK, PUZZLE FANS!

📖 COURSE NOTES

Today’s cartoon takes us to the clubhouse at a golf course, where one golfer is eager to share an unforgettable moment from late in the round. Before he can say a word, his friend, who’s taking a break with a book about the legendary St. Andrews course, is just as eager to fill him in on what happened at the famous 17th hole there. It proves that golfers never seem to run out of memorable moments to talk about, and some of them are too good not to share from beginning to end.

➤ READY TO TEE OFF A STORY

The standing golfer is wearing a classic baseball-style cap with sideburns peeking out beneath it. His short-sleeved collared golf shirt has all three buttons fastened, and he’s wearing checkered golf pants while enthusiastically gesturing, eager to tell the latest story from the course.

➤ THE 17TH-HOLE READER

The seated golfer has thinning, receding hair and is sitting at a square table while reading a book titled St. Andrews. His short-sleeved collared shirt has three buttons, with only the bottom button fastened, and the shirt features the familiar Jumble “J” clue-letter logo. The book’s cover shows the famous Swilcan Bridge, a golfer, and a view of the St. Andrews Old Course.

➤ A COURSE WORTH TALKING ABOUT

Behind them is a peaceful golf course with two flagsticks rising from the holes in the distance.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a “5” + 5 layout. Saturday’s puzzle was halfway solved after reading the cartoon sentence. The book immediately pointed me to STORY, so I moved on to the clue words to figure out the rest. Once STORY was in place and crossed off, “HOLES” became obvious to bring this one to a close. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the book, which pointed to STORY, along with both golfers talking about memorable moments on different HOLES. The wordplay came from “HOLES” referring to golf HOLES rather than the word WHOLE.
