Today’s cartoon takes us to a peaceful mountain stream, where two bears are waiting for the perfect opportunity to catch a salmon. As one suggests trying their luck farther upstream, the other is convinced they’ve already found the best spot. With the river flowing, the fish expected to arrive at any moment, and both bears keeping a close watch, it seems like all that’s left to do is stay exactly where they are.

➤ THE TWO BEARS

The bear on the left is standing on its hind legs with one thumb pointing upstream as it suggests moving to a different spot. The other bear is on all fours with its head lowered toward the water, convinced the salmon will be arriving there at any moment.

➤ THE BACKGROUND

A winding mountain stream flows through the scene with a couple of rocks breaking the current. Trees and grassy banks line both sides of the water, while mountains rise in the distance beneath a large cloud and an eagle soaring overhead.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 13-letter anagram that solved into a “4” + 5 + 4 layout. Our hump day puzzle was, in my opinion, the most challenging one we’ve had in weeks. Looking at the layout, I was nearly certain that BEAR would be part of the wordplay, but with all four clue words solved, there wasn’t a B anywhere to be found. Moving on to Plan B, the W stood out as the odd letter out. It took a minute or two, but WADE finally came to mind after noticing that one bear was standing on its hind legs while the other was on all fours. With that starting point, the rest just flowed naturally to finish this one off. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudge was the second bear insisting they should stay right where they were, pointing us toward “WADE” RIGHT HERE, with WADE providing the wordplay that completed the answer.
