CARTOON ANSWER:

STABLE
ENVIRONMENT

WELCOME BACK, PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🐴 NEIGH-BORS

Today’s cartoon trots us into a stable where the horses seem pretty convinced they’ve landed in the perfect place to live. One horse points out how easy they have it, while another agrees there isn’t much around the barn to cause any stress. Even the farm dog looks thrilled to be part of the operation, making this seem less like a workplace and more like a happy little community. Between the comfortable stalls, the friendly company, and the peaceful surroundings, everyone appears to be thriving under the same roof.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ THE STABLE CREW

Three horses are leaning out from their stalls and carrying on a conversation with a dog in the aisle.

➤ THE FARM DOG

A medium-sized dog wearing a collar sits outside the stalls, happily joining the discussion. He faces the horses and looks completely at home among his stable friends.

➤ BARN DETAILS

The wooden stable stretches into the background with visible stall dividers, support beams, and roof trusses overhead. A horseshoe hangs on the front of the nearest stall, bits of hay peek out from beneath the stall doors, and a small bird is perched above one of the stalls.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 17-letter anagram that solved into a 6 + 11 layout. As is often the case, Sundays tend to be the most challenging puzzles thanks to the extra clue words and longer answer layouts, and our final puzzle of May certainly lived up to that reputation. Before looking at the clue words, I spent a few moments studying the cartoon. At first glance, it didn’t seem to offer much direction. The horses, dog, and barn setting looked pleasant enough, but nothing immediately jumped off the page. Then the opening letters “VEN” caught my eye, and with everyone appearing so comfortable together in the barn, ENVIRONMENT trotted into view sooner than expected. The remaining six letters didn’t take long to corral into STABLE, which helped carry this one across the finish line. It’s funny how some of the longer words sometimes reveal themselves faster than the shorter ones. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the relaxed STABLE setting and the dialogue, both of which hinted that their ENVIRONMENT couldn’t have been much better.

🔭 LUNAR LOOKOUT

Micro Blue Moon Peaks at 4:45 A.M. EST

➤ A Blue Moon is the name given to the second full Moon that appears within a single calendar month—a relatively uncommon event that happens only every few years. Our last full Moon, the Flower Moon, lit up the sky on May 1. Despite its name, a Blue Moon doesn’t actually appear blue.

➤ Tonight’s Moon is also a Micro Moon, meaning it occurs near the Moon’s farthest point from Earth. At 252,360 miles away, it will be the most distant full Moon we’ll see until another Micro Moon arrives on New Year’s Eve 2028.

➤ For comparison, May’s full Moon was about 238,855 miles away, making tonight’s Moon roughly 13,505 miles farther from Earth. That’s equivalent to 237,688 football fields lined up end to end, 515 marathons back-to-back, about 5½ trips from New York to Los Angeles, or 2,455 Mount Everests stacked on top of one another.

➤ ⭐ Bonus Skywatching Tip: Look for the brilliant red star Antares, often called the “Heart of the Scorpion” in the constellation Scorpius. It will shine prominently right beside the Moon, creating a beautiful celestial pairing!
