PUZZLE PLAYERS!

HANDLED

Today’s cartoon drops us onto the ice as a confident curling team sizes up the situation and likes what they see. One voice calls out that they have got this, another pushes for a shutout, and a third points out that no losses are on the board just yet. With brooms flying, stones sliding, and the scoreboard telling a lopsided story, this feels less like a contest and more about making sure nothing gets left behind.

➤ ON THE ICE

The scoreboard reads 20 to nothing as three Olympic curlers work the stone down the sheet. Two sweep hard out front, action lines flying as the granite glides exactly where it’s meant to go, while a third teammate hangs back offering support and calling the shot. In the background, Olympic rings sit proudly on a banner above the ice.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 10 letters that would settle into a 5 + 5 layout. Going into the puzzle, CLEAN SWEEP was already on my brain after one look at the cartoon, and to my surprise, it ended up being the answer. If this one gave you any pause, the heavy action lines around the brooms and the wildly lopsided score were our biggest nudges.

Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Curling

➤ What are curling stones made of?
Curling stones are made from a rare, shatter-resistant granite found in only two places on Earth: Ailsa Craig in Scotland and the Trefor Granite Quarry in Wales. This unique stone is shaped and polished to withstand decades of play, and some stones still in use today were quarried more than 40 years ago.
SOURCE
➤ How much do curling stones weigh?
A standard curling stone weighs 42 pounds. While players don’t lift them repeatedly, competitive curling demands serious balance, flexibility, and endurance. Athletes hold deep lunges during delivery, maintain stability on slick ice, and generate constant motion and force while sweeping.
SOURCE
➤ What is the purpose of sweeping in curling?
Sweeping slightly melts the ice at a microscopic level, creating a thin layer of water that allows the stone to travel farther and straighter. Effective sweeping takes strength, speed, and balance, as players press hard into the broom while moving as fast as possible without losing control.

💬 SAY WHAT?

“If I were smart, I could figure out curling. If I were even smarter, I could figure out why people would actually watch other people doing it. I have tried. I can’t. I can’t even figure out the object of the game. Is it like darts? I just don’t get it.” — Bob Schieffer

🥄 VIRAL RECIPE

Italian Cherry Almond Cookies

These cookies hit that rare sweet spot where crisp edges meet a soft, chewy center. The almond flavor comes through without overpowering, the cherries add just enough pop, and the powdered sugar finish gives them that classic bakery look. They feel old-world traditional but still manage to steal attention the moment they hit the table.
