BEAKS & BEAMS

Today’s cartoon takes us to a quiet farm where a farmer is juggling two jobs at once. He scatters feed from his satchel as the chickens peck at the ground, while tall, straight pine trees grow neatly nearby. In the background, a henhouse waits with its ramp down, and just beyond it sits a cart already loaded with cut logs. The farmer calls the chickens inside so more timber can be harvested for the telephone company, making it clear this is no ordinary operation, but a place where birds and pines are raised side by side.

BACKYARD BOSS The farmer is in pure country mode. A trucker hat, a full beard frames his face, and his flannel sleeves are rolled up for business.

FEED & FEATHERS His left hand scatters chicken feed across the ground while his right shoulder carries a satchel, open and ready for another scoop. Six chickens crowd in fast, heads down, pecking like this is the best part of their day!

POLES IN PROGRESS Behind the henhouse, straight pine trees stand tall, while six have already been cut and stacked in a cart.

🧩 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a twelve letter anagram that solved into a “4 – 4” + 4 layout. It was a longer structure than we usually see on a Tuesday, but it didn’t stayed cooped up for long. FARM was an early giveaway based on the cartoon sentence, with trees being grown to be chopped down and hauled off. That left POLE and TREE to finish things off, and the background did most of the heavy lifting. The straight pine trees, the mention of the telephone company, and the stacked logs in the cart all pointed us in the right direction. Add in the chickens pecking away in the foreground, and the poultry side of the pun was complete.

  1. Today’s jumble was a real challenge. The first in many years. For some reason, I couldn’t get FOREY out of my head, knowing that it was incorrect. Then there was the solve: “Pole-Tree” Farm. Clever though it may be, but Seriously? 😃Warren
