The Calm Before the Toss
Today’s cartoon drops us into a restaurant where a bit of dining room drama is unfolding. Two staff members who prepare tableside Caesar salads have run out of lettuce, and judging by the looks on their faces, it’s a popular request this evening. The chef, clearly unfazed and one step ahead, promises them that a fresh order is on the way. With customers waiting and service at a standstill, the only move left is to keep everyone settled until the greens arrive.

COOL AT THE CENTER
The chef stands with both palms raised and motion lines signaling a relax gesture. On her workstation sit a knife and two empty bowls.
➤
TABLESIDE TENSION
The two salad makers look polished and professional, holding salad tongs in their left hands while reacting with concerned gestures from their right. Their carts mirror each other and are stocked with everything needed for a Caesar: olive oil, eggs, anchovies in a tin, grated Parmesan, and a large bowl for tossing. Both are wearing similar uniforms consisting of a bow tie, collared shirt, and jacket.
➤
DINERS ON HOLD
In the background, two and a half dining tables are visible. The two fully shown tables each seat a patient couple. The pair on the right looks very much like Jumble Jeff and his wife, appearing to hold hands as they wait.
The final answer was an anagram consisting of 11 letters that would solve into a layout of 7 + 4. The first word in quotes told us the answer would lean into punny wordplay. At first glance, everything was well hidden and nothing grabbed my attention. After a minute or so, I started thinking about what actually goes into a Caesar, and since the dialogue never mentioned which kind of lettuce was missing, ROMAINE finally came into focus. From there, CALM sealed the deal as a simple four letter finish. If this one mixed you up, our visual nudges were the empty tossing bowls, the chef’s unused bowls, and her hand gesture signaling there was no need to panic.
