Odds and Ends

Today’s cartoon takes us inside a gas station where a woman is paying for her fuel. She sees the jackpot sign showing eight hundred million and decides that with a prize that big she might as well buy two. The attendant rattles off the odds, hinting that purchasing a second ticket will not make much difference. His comment suggests that the result will fall where it may, no matter how many slips she decides to get.

Jumble Jeff’s Gems

➤ The woman at the counter is holding a bill in her hand and wearing a small pendant. Her eyes are fixed on the jackpot display and she points toward it with her left index finger.

➤ The lottery ticket machine sits closest to us on the counter, and on the other end is a display stand of gum or candy with the fourth pack down on the left missing.

➤ The tall glass windows reveal the pumps outside, with her car pulled up to one of them. And a security camera is mounted inside, above the door.

➤ The attendant wears a collared shirt with matching trim on the sleeves. He sports long hair, sideburns, and a thick mustache.

Final Solve

The final answer was an anagram consisting of nine letters that would solve into a layout of “3” + 6. The three letter word was in quotes, pointing us toward punny wordplay. The U and B sitting together in the solved letters made “BUY” a quick pick-off, and CHANCE lined up with barely a glance. For our visual clues, the woman buying the ticket gave us the first half, and the attendant talking about the lottery odds handed us the second. A clean wrap for a puzzle where the only thing guaranteed was a smile!

No Bake Fudgy Chocolate Cookies

These cookies hit that sweet spot between rich and simple. The base melts together in a saucepan and turns glossy before the oats go in, and the mixture sets up fast once it hits the parchment. The chocolate stays deep and smooth, the texture stays soft in the middle with a light chew on the edges, and the whole batch comes together quicker than most snacks disappear. They are the kind of treat people make once and then keep making because the payoff is instant and the clean up is almost nothing.
