Good Morning, Everyone!         🇺🇸 HAPPY VETERANS DAY 🇺🇸

🎶 Oh beautiful for spacious skies….For amber waves of grain…For purple mountain majesty above the fruited plain…AMERICA, AMERICA, God shed his grace on thee..And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea🎶… “America The Beautiful” – Mr Ray Charles 2001

I spent so much time trying to identify the man and the quote in today’s puzzle, that I’m going to forgo the usual breakdown of today’s words. Suffice to say they were easily solved…

With today being Veterans Day, our cartoon, rightfully so, honors our Veterans. At first quick glance, my initial impression when looking at the gentleman at the lectern addressing the crowd, was that he was Joe Biden. But after enlarging the picture, I saw that the man had facial hair, a bushy mustache and chin whiskers, which eliminated Joe. Then I tried identifying the quote, and I came up empty there too. But while doing so, I read through a few of the speeches that Joe Biden had made on past Veterans Days, and I was very moved…As I am by the words used in our puzzle today. It’s a powerful statement. Thank you, Jeff. But going by the hats worn by the three men in the audience plus the man seated at the dais, and the pin affixed to the hat of the man seated farthest left, I think it’s safe to say that we’re at a gathering of the American Legion. But sadly, that’s about all I can tell you. So, if anyone out there recognizes the man and the words he’s speaking, please write in and let us know. Or maybe Jeff will tell us who he patterned today’s moving cartoon after.

As for the solution, with the words Promise and Respect being used in both the dialogue and the question, and “Respect” being emphasized by the quotation marks, it was easy to conjure up HONOR, and WORD was a given. So whether you solve like I do, with the cartoons’ clues, or with the circled letters that offered up all those “O”s, it was a pretty easy segue into WORD OF HONOR. Nicely done, David.

And in Honor of the brave men and women whom we celebrate today, the heart and soul of all that is America, I thank you for your service, I pray for your strength, and I offer you my utmost Respect…God Bless America 🇺🇸 Today and every day....🙋🏻‍♀️

It’s about how we treat our veterans every single day of the year. It’s about making sure they have the care they need and the benefits that they’ve earned when they come home. It’s about serving all of you as well as you’ve served the United States of America.” — Barack Obama

    • Good Morning, Professor. When you say “a marvelous tribute to us all”? Do you mean all Veterans, or all Americans? I only ask because if you are a Veteran, I want to express my gratitude to you. Either way, it is a moving song. And yes, I agree, it’s an easy, breezy one today. Enjoy your day, Prof. I hope the horrid S—w ❄️☃️ passes you by! Stay warm. 🇺🇸🙋🏻‍♀️

    • Here’s my take…🇺🇸🙋🏻‍♀️

📙 With one ROUGH draft after another, and still nowhere close to the FINAL manuscript, he felt like a ROOKIE lacking the WISDOM to finish…and was so sorry that he’d given the publisher his WORD OF HONOR …📙

🧔🏻They said he lacked the WISDOM to make the FINAL cut,
They labeled him a ROOKIE which he definitely wasn’t…but
He did give them a ROUGH time, he acted like a goner…
So he’s to blame for their not trusting his weak WORD OF HONOR 🧔🏻

  2. How anyone can listen to Lee Greenwood’s rendition of ” God Bless the USA” and not get goose bumps, would be extremely hard for me to comprehend. Thanks for the info about the Browns playing this song at their home games, Chuck!

  3. The only thing that gave me pause today was finding this site. The words and solve were givens. As a vet, it saddens me that words of honor are now too often usurped by greed or ego. Also, that the biases we recognized and abandoned for the greater good return when we go home. My brothers, enjoy the day and the time you’ve been given with your family.

  4. Good puzzle this morning and a nice tribute to our veterans. May I add my thanks to all of you who served so bravely to keep us safe and free.

    • Hi Betty. And may I add, (if I remember correctly), my thanks to you and the many women like you who served (and still do), at home while their men served in the military. Your sacrifices were many also, and way too often you didn’t get the credit you deserved. Have a wonderful day, Betty. 🇺🇸🙋🏻‍♀️

  5. Hi all – I only got ROOKIE and WISDOM by recognizing them from past appearances. Then yes, all the “O’s” showed HONOR pretty quickly.

I watched some hockey games on Saturday (which is Hockey Night in Canada), and noticed something interesting – all the pre-game ceremonies I saw from the US brought out WWII vets, but the three Canadian teams I saw each had people with direct connections to World War One (since there are apparently no WWI vets left).

In any case, Veterans or Remembrance Day, I hope yours is a good one.

“It was extremely ROUGH WISDOM that Wayne Gretzky absorbed in his ROOKIE Stanley Cup FINAL appearance, but the lessons learned quickly led to four championships”.

    • Hi Steve…Nice slant, 👏🏻👏🏻! The man that’s often been called Hockeys’ greatest player, is beloved in NY. I’m glad you picked him! Have a good one! 🇺🇸🙋🏻‍♀️

      • I’ll never forget watching his last game at the Garden (on TV) and seeing that they had painted “99” in his “office” in the ice behind each goal, John Davidson‘s tribute, and the commissioner saying “No one in the NHL will ever wear 99 again” (to which one of the sportswriters said “Who ever would?”) 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

      • I too remember Bettman saying that nobody would ever wear #99 again, and the cheering that followed it. And the signs that said…”No Regretskys” …typical NY slang. I saw him play so many times in the years he spent with us. And even though he might have had his “best” years behind him when we got him, we still loved him like only NY fans can. NY’s a great town to retire from….🏒🙋🏻‍♀️

  6. You know, it’s funny…We all seem to be on the Veterans Day bandwagon today, and yet you read a story like the one below, that was all over the news y’day. How do things like this happen? It made me cry…In my wildest nightmares I could never imagine walking 100 miles to go anywhere…let alone a Dr appt, and carrying oxygen to boot. It gets me so incensed to see things like this. We (read the government) don’t do enough for our Veterans and so much of the lip service we’re hearing today is just that…My first thought…well maybe my second…I can’t repeat my first thought here…was to start a GoFund Me page for this guy, and then I saw that one had already been started. And I felt honored to donate. It just bothers me so much when I see American money not being spent where it should be, on these true Americans…And then another story making headlines today, Las Vegas, making it illegal to be homeless. So many of our Veterans are homeless…What will this solve? I’m just terribly disillusioned today… And I just had to get this off my chest. Maybe it’s being in NY, and seeing our Parade and our festivities, which aren’t photo shoot opportunities, and belong to our Veterans, that just got me feeling more sentimental than usual towards them. Anyway, again, to all our Veterans out there, Thank you so much for your service,..🇺🇸🙋🏻‍♀️
