Jumble Answers for 08/30/2018

Happy Thursday, Jumble friends! There weren’t any new clue words this morning, but the list of recycled favorites gave us all new anagrams to decipher. TIGHT and THINK didn’t require any effort and were both immediately visible upon first glance. The last two took a considerable amount of time to work through with KENNEL being my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. It was also the oldest clue word of the group with its last appearance being 9/23/14. Once solved, all of the clue words were in reverse alphabetical order.

The setting for today’s cartoon lands us back in the classroom where we see a teacher giving a lesson on number values. If you remember back to Monday’s puzzle, we saw a group of four children sitting at one long desk during the lesson while today we see three children sitting on the floor. The dialogue of the teacher explains the differences between 1 and 0 in very basic terms. The charming remark by the young boy seated on the far right indicates that he has truly grasped the concept being taught.

Two details in today’s panel caught my eye with the first being the young child on the right. He looks very similar to the child that we saw in Monday’s cartoon where he was drawn with a clueless look on his face. Maybe math is his preferred subject or this is his twin! The second detail was the pattern on the bottom of the young girls sneaker. It’s amazing that just a few squiggly lines can really add some visual appeal.

The anagram for the final solution was abnormally large and contained 13-letters. What immediately jumped out at me was the X and N together. It brought NEXT to mind which allowed the rest of the solution to come naturally. Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. 🎶 You’re still the ONE who can scratch my itch…Still the ONE…And I wouldn’t switch…We’re still having fun…And you’re still the ONE…You are still the ONE that makes me shout…Still the ONE that I dream about…We’re still having fun…And you’re still the ONE…”🎶 “Still The One” – Orleans 1976

0️⃣1️⃣ So School Days “are” the rule days as far as Jumble goes,
On Monday we were verbing and today it’s number lows…
    I THINK we’re at a Pre-School, since they’re sitting on the floor,
And my Littles know their numbers, being only three and four.
Or maybe it’s a Nursery School, a TIGHT-knit group we see?
Where the youngest of our children enter these “Academies”?
Today kids are so far advanced…OUTFOX you on a dime,
With knowledge of their numbers often learned within a rhyme.
Or through pictures of some puppies in a KENNEL or a yard,
Or printed in bright colors on a series of Flash Cards…
It’s amazing what these tiny minds are capable to glean,
Like the little boy who’s lamenting the absence of Ice Cream!
You want to laugh, although he’s right with what he’s offering,
He’s got the point, he Zeroed in on what’s NEXT TO NOTHING! 0️⃣1️⃣

Ice Cream! Sweet!…Just like our words today, all Sweet Repeats…with KENNEL the oldest ONE…having been seen almost 4 years ago, on September 23, 2014! Perhaps before these children in our cartoon were even born! And with our words solved, without being OUTFOXed by this pesky combination entry, let’s turn to our cartoon…Set in a Classroom, timely with the return to School upon us, we see three little children being taught NUMBERS. Starting with the LOW NUMBERS, we hear our Teacher telling and showing them on the board that having ONE is a single thing, and with ZERO, you “Don’t have any”…It’s NOTHING…So with our question asking the VALUE of ONE..? It’s NEXT TO NOTHING! Good ONE, David! We can always COUNT on you!

Ok, eye candy…We have our requisite Whiteboard, with its’ marker and eraser…and on it we see the NUMBERS, ZERO to EIGHT, with our Teacher’s finger placed between the ZERO and the ONE…Great emphatic detail, Jeff. And we have our THREE little children…The girl farthest left, smiles…she gets it. The girl in the middle? Her right hand is raised as a child would do when they’re COUNTING on their fingers…with the look on her face telling us that she’s still ONEdering about it…And the squiggly lined sole of her sneaker is colored the same as her shorts…And our little guy at the right? Raising his hand for permission as he speaks? He’s the funny ONE! Oh, he’s got it…if only because he didn’t last night! “ZERO Ice Cream”! How Sweet is that? But with NOTHING really jumping off the page today? I’m going with the Teachers finger placement…It’s right to the POINT! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And to whoever invented ZERO? Thanks for NOTHING! 0️⃣1️⃣ 🙋🏻

  2. The owner of the KENNEL was in a TIGHT spot and needed to THINK of a way to OUTFOX his creditors.
No difficulty with the scrambled words or the solution. The X from OUTFOX and the teacher pointing to 0 gave me all the help I needed.
Interesting references to past use of words Mike, I don’t remember OUTFOX—may have been before I joined this blog. But then my memory is not great at which words are repeats. Love the fact that both you and Angela zeroed in on the lines on the bottom of the girls sneakers.
Angela—great song which certainly added up to a sum I can smile at–math not being my forte.
Poem and Prose preposterously prescient. Picture painted perfectly –positively professional.
Yucky day up here—not a meteorological term but certainly describes the conditions.
Enjoy the respite from the HHH which is promised today???

    • Hi Earl. Good Morning…Great use of OUTFOX within your sentence…Your creativity always makes me smile…Thanks so much for the Shout Outs and the Poem Nom..and especially today for this alliterative gem! It’s P-ure gold! I’d like to offer you one in return, but I’m a little blah this morning…Hopefully I’ll do so for you as the day goes on…That sneaker sole? LOL..Those squiggly lines where hard to ignore! And today’s song…For a quick second, 🎶One..(Is the Lonliest Number)🎶 played an opening bar…but..too sad…It never had a chance! 😂😂 …It’s very yucky here too…maybe that’s what’s causing my malaise…I too am hoping we get the promised respite…it’s definitely been brutal…Have a good one, Earl…Ciao, Bello! 0️⃣1️⃣🙋🏻
PS: The controversy with the “Shirt Scandal” at the Open? The “sexism” sound familiar? 😉

      • “shirt Issue” at the Open was definitely a ZERO. ” Next to Nothing ” for the officials to get their panties in a knot about.
IMO. It reflects more on the mores of Americans compared to Europeans. I wonder what a female official would have done?

        • Sexist, antiquated nonsense! And how funny that we were just speaking of it last week, right?.. When I questioned the “rules” for women’s dress and tennis. Just the thought of humiliating that young girl, gets my blood boiling…And all the while not one, but two shirtless men sitting nearby! SMH! It’s such a joke…And what about Miss Serena and her jumpsuit? It’s all so unwarranted…And of course, both woman rising above with the class and dignity these male umpires and officials will never perfect…Too much of a double standard, Earl..I’m so glad the “Open” ate crow, but that’s only because of the outrage from social media…they can’t hide anymore. But it’s not enough. These “rules” need to be looked into, and revamped to afford women the same respect it does men…Its 2018 for goodness sake! And I too wonder what a female official might have done, but we may never know…It all just gets my goat!..Phew!…And imagine if I played tennis!??? 😂🙋🏻

  3. Good morning. Another easy breezy one today. I actually had this entire jumble done while the commercial was still on in between the news. After writing down the letters for the cartoon, the last word came to mind right away followed by the first two. Nice job Mike. Angela, loved the song choice and especially the last line. I’m happy to say that you are extremely well above nothing. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn…ROTFL! I gotta tell you, Bud…I’ve been referred to as a NUMBER of things over the years…but “extremely well above nothing” is a definite first! And I LOVE it! Guaranteed I’ll be using it in the future…You, Paul, are ONE in a million! 😘 Thanks for the Shout Out, and I’m glad you enjoyed the song…I’ve been humming it all morning. And I agree, another easy, breezy ONE today…Have a great day, Brooklyn..Stay cool! 0️⃣1️⃣🙋🏻

  4. Outfox tended to ‘outfox’ me momentarily, but the other words came quickly to mind. The solution popped into my mind independent of the letters ,but then I am a math guy.

  5. Another cute puzzle this morning. I too had a brief pause at outfox but was able to figure it all out without too much effort. Totally agree with you, Angela, about the U.S. Open’s attitude toward that young woman. You tell them, girl!! Have a good day all.

    • Hi Betty…I can’t remember the last time I felt so strongly about an insult that wasn’t directed at me! …I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. In a sports bra…With her back turned! I mean she didn’t “flash” anyone! But being forced to jump around in those ridiculous little skirts, “flashing” everyone each time they take a swing is acceptable? SMH…And it’s not a question of the time and place, it’s because she’s a woman…I just hope the injustice leads to some good…And thanks for the high five! Have a good one! Ciao, Bella! 🙋🏻

      • Ask Steve about a local fall out in the Oakland School District. They had to make cuts to their sports programs and guess what got cut?? Girls Sports disproportionately to Boys Sports. Guess they’ve never heard of Title Nine in the district office there but the parents sure have. Now some of the local professional sports teams have donated money to the cause but that’s not the point is it? We may have “come a long way baby” but in my opinion we still have a long way to go. Shame! Shame! Shame!! It’s enough to turn one into a flaming feminist.

        • You’re so right, Betty. It’s still so rampantly practiced, it’s just disguised behind political mumbo-jumbo. I’m going to read up on this…I’ve gotten my blood pressure under control by now…And as much as I love men?…If we’re not the feminists…Then who? 🙋🏻

    • We have a poster that says “Feminism – the radical idea that women are people.” I think the poster’s 35 years old, and yet… Totally agree, Betty, although it also shows how incompetent the Oakland school district is. Ann Killion in the Chron had an excellent article about how Title IX has been the law for a generaton now, and yet these people didn’t even think to consider it for a second before making a last minute announcement of cuts.
You should check out father-of-two-daughters Steph Curry’s article on The Players’ Tribune.

      • Hey Steve…Hard to believe but it’s been 46 years! We’ re looking at 2 generations…It’s a sad commentary, right? (Remnded me of your story about your wife and the ice cream cone..not the sad part, the realization of how much time has elapsed)! 😉 🙋🏻

  6. Hi all – Only OUTFOX took an extra second, when FOX showed it to be a double word.
🎵”I’m not trying to be your hero
Cause that zero is too cold for me, brrr
I’m not trying to be your highness
Cause that minus is too low to see, yeah
    Nothing from nothing leaves nothing
You gotta have something if you want to be with me”🎵 (Billy Preston)

I’ve been waiting for zero to appear again. I’m not much on philosophy, but I’ll go all Zen on you for a minute. The BBC had a really interesting (to me) article about how India invented the zero, and how the cultures and religions of Asia predisposed them to it, being built on the concept of nothingness or emptying the mind. Conversely, the Europeans believed that, since God was in everything, a symbol representing nothing must be Satanic and banned it.

The article also contains this amusing story:
“When Alexander the Great came to India, he met an old wise man sitting on a rock and staring at the sky, and asked him, ‘What are you doing?’
‘I’m experiencing nothingness. What are you doing?’ the man replied.
‘I am conquering the world,’ Alexander said.
They both laughed; each one thought the other was a fool, and was wasting his life.”

Have a fine day doing something, or nothing at all!

  7. Hello!  Just a quick note to say my mother and I really love your comments.  She loves getting the words in record time, and she usually agrees with your choice of the most difficult anagram to unscramble. However, she and I both agree that we don’t care for Angela’s comments.  They seem a bit silly and don’t make much sense some times.  Just giving you our opinion.  We would love for you to comment each and every day instead. Thank you for helping us figure these out – we truly enjoy reading your comments. SincerelyCarol Bray and Eleanor Roy
