CARTOON ANSWER:   WHEN THE CHEF RAN OUT OF SEAFOOD FOR HER FAMOUS CHOWDER, IT WAS A – – –

T   CM   LY   AI   =  “CLAM-ITY

Good Morning, Everyone!                   🍲 AW, SHUCKS! 🍲

🎶 Hey everybody gather round…Listen to that bongo sound, Grab the first one in your reach…Now we’re going to shake the beach. Do the CLAM, do the CLAM…Grab your barefoot Baby by the hand…Turn and tease, hug and squeeze…Dig right in and do the CLAM…Dig right in and do the CLAM…🎶 “Do The Clam” – Elvis  1965

🍲 I love making Clam Chowder, I love Seafood per se,
So many fresh varieties to cook such different ways…
The first time I heard Quahog, I thought it very strange,
A clam’s a clam…be CANDID here…why must the name be changed?
Like LAWYER and Attorney, who needs so many words?
The synonyms we use each day are sometimes for the birds!
An indentation’s called a NOTCH, there’s many words like this,
I’m going off the subject here…Let me get back to Fish…
The Clams ran out, panic ensues…is what we’re seeing here…
The Chef’s upset..(I’m thinking…do I need a COMMA there)?
With Quahogs being big and bold, they need these great big pots…
You’re making Chowder for a crowd? You need to make a lot.
So what became of this days’ fare…perhaps they served spaghetti?
Oh wait…Seafood? They’d still need clams! Just more and more “CLAM-ITY”! 🍲

Today’s words, while nothing to get STEAMED about, have SERVED up a few little  quirks. We have two words beginning with a SEA, COMMA and CANDID, and they both “C”ontain double “C”onsonants. A 4-C situation! NOTCH and LAWYER have very recently appeared, both in the same week…June 25th and 29th respectfully…and are now showing up in the same puzzle! Sweet Repeats taken to the exSTREAM, wouldn’t you say? As I said, just a few little quirks, for those of you who like to DIG a little DEEPer, and CHOW down with your words. And our CATCH of the day? Hmm…Perhaps LAWYER? But the jury’s still out…

Ok, our cartoon: Finding ourselves in a Restaurant Kitchen, we come upon a pretty DEEP SEA-N…The restaurant, “IT’S CHOWDER THIS WORLD“, known for CHEF ANN’s Famous CLAM CHOWDER, has run out of QUAHOGS, which is just a bigger word, for bigger CLAMS. And it SEAms to be at the worst posSEAble time…With orders still coming in, the Sous Chef, SHELLY, announces..”We’re Out”, and is left holding the bag. Or in this case, the empty Tray! What will they do? Did no one foreSEA this? Was someone being SHELL FISH? Should ANN be wearing a Hair NET? …So many questions…But the one in answer to our Puzzle? It was a …”CLAM-ITY”! Mmm..I mean Hmm…Ok, I’ll just spit it out…No use walking on eggSHELLS here…David, it’s a cute pun, but I think it’s just a little HALF BAKED! CaLAM-ITY….SHORE, I get it, but “A“! …You really went FISHING for this one, no?

Anyway, eye candy…Two boiling pots are shown, one ladled, flames flickering beneath them, and four empty SHELLS lie on the sideboard. We see SHELLY, FISHING around, hoping to SEA FOOD, with that….”OY…’STERS no more CLAMS” look on his face…We have our waitress, PEARL, in her SPAGHETTI tie, calling for two more orders, as she adds them to the ORDER WHEEL, and adds to the PEARL pressure. In the background, SILTing at tables, we SEA three diners, the SOLE woman, highly animated. On the table, salt and pepper shakers FLANK a bud vase. But the MAIN COURSE here today? It has to be ANN…Raising her MUSSELed arm, holding her head, GRITting her teeth. Wanting to scream..”SHELL no“!…She’s just so unSHORE of what to do next…She’s a virtual FISH OUT OF WATER! SHUCKS, I wish I could KELP…Just how will this end??? TUNA in next time, Folks, and we SHELL SEA!…So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…Never get TIDE down by the PIER pressure of life…Come out of your SHELL…and make WAVES! 🍲🙋🏻

🙏🏻 Prayers for Hawaii 🙏🏻

  1. The LAWYER wanted to be CANDID in his language and removed the COMMA from his statement and raised its elegance up a NOTCH.
No difficulty with the scrambled words or the solution. I had a blind solve even though the inverted commas showed up—how ironic—COMMA being a scrambled word.
Not sure why I don’t remember the Elvis song, Angela—could be it came out while I was out of the country and some of his songs did not become international hits. Great choice nevertheless.
Of all your puns and word play, I guess “OY-STERS” got the most attention and put a big grin on my face this Saturday morn. I won’t even attempt to add to the tidal wave of seafood references you dredged up for us—Brilliant.
Keep the residents of Hawaii in your thoughts and hope that the hurricane leaves soon.

    • Good Morning…Earl. I agree, easy breezy one today, although the pun somehow leaves me wanting more! Enjoy your sentence, as always, WELL DONE! I like how you refer to what we call quotation marks, as inverted commas. Is that a British term? I’ve been meaning to ask you…The Elvis song, from a movie of his, “Girl Happy”, isn’t widely known at all. I only remember it, because it’s on an old LP my Father had. It wasn’t widely acclaimed either, by no means. The year 1965. So even if you were here in this country, there’s a pretty good chance you may have missed it! 😉 But yes, it is a good fit for today’s puzzle…Thank you so much for the Shout Outs and the Poem Nom…Even tho I’m not crazy about the pun, I still had a lot of fun with the puzzle itself. “OY-STERS” gave me a laugh for myself also! 😉 I’m glad you enjoyed it all…I’m hearing this morning that the Hurricane in Hawaii has been downgraded…small favors..but better than originally predicted. Still, a lot of damage is taking place. My thought and prayers are with them. Have a great day, Earl..Enjoy this beautiful weather we’re being SERVED UP! 🍲🙋🏻

  2. Good morning. Angela, great song choice. Elvis was my wife’s favorite singer. His picture was inside the cover of her roller skating box. Terrific puns as well. At the minimum, you will get me to shake my head and marvel at your work. Earl, great work as always. Today’s jumble was fairly easy. The last two words did take me an extra ten minutes to get. Candid would be my choice for hardest word. When the words finally come, you wonder why it took so long. The cartoon answer was easy once I wrote down the letters. I even thought it was a cute answer. I had to look up quahogs having not seen it before. Just this week on T.V. Fish and wildlife were inspecting boat loads of them for freshness and if they were legally registered, as they are very expensive. Some companies try to sneak cases in among the legal ones. It puts thousands in their pockets. It was interesting. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn. I’m glad you enjoyed my song choice…And glad I stirred up a sweet memory for you. You’re very Sweet! 😘 Thanks sooo much for the Shout Outs…Trust me, I marvel at you also! Your ability to make me laugh so much…I’m a pushover for a good laugh! That V-8 moment? Yea, it is always a good one…Just the way it is! QUAHOGS? Don’t feel bad…2 of my friends this morning..Same thing…And yet, we bought Seafood the other day…and there was a sign…”QUAHOGS”! So I asked…”You guys saw the sign right”? Both of them..”Yea, we figured it was the brand”!!! And this is why I shake my head so much! Believe me, these guys give me whiplash!!! 😂😂 There’s always been a ton of nonsense going on within the Fish industry. Remember years ago, before Rudy “cleaned up” the Fulton Fish Market? God, what went on there! There was always something FISHY going on at that place! 😉 Have a good one, Brooklyn! Hope you get to enjoy this beautiful weather! Ciao, Bello! 🍲🙋🏻

  3. Like Paul, I needed to look up quahogs. This gave me the answer, which I thought was very cute. I had to back into lawyer, even though we had seen that word recently.

    • Hi Caroline. And it was cleverly put in Ann’s “mouth” so that the puzzle could avoid using the word CLAM! They CLAMMED up on the CLAM! 😉 And I think LAWYER was the best anagram also…Have a good one! 🍲🙋🏻

  4. Hi all – Ok David, just go ahead and put the LY right at the end of the word to taunt us, and on the word that was the hardest for me, to boot! 😂
Also tried the double-letter trick and putting IC at the end, but CANDID appeared quickly. My favorite detail was the hanging Lazy Susan with the orders clipped to it – been awhile since I’ve seen that.

I’ve never been much of a seafood fan, but I will admit to enjoying clam cakes at the oceanside amusement parks and drive-ins during the summer, and I’m familiar with the term “quahog”. I suspect you could start a civil war, even in an area as tiny as Rhode Island, over whether it’s pronounced “QUAY-HOG” or “QUAW-HOG”. I think I’ve heard that they’re mentioned in the animated “Family Guy”, but I don’t watch it. (Oh wait, I just looked it up. It’s set in the town of Quahog, and they pronounce it KO-HOG!! Told ya it would be controversial!) 😂

Out here on the coast there’s an even more unappetizing delicacy – as if the appearance wasn’t enough, the thought of eating something pronounced “GOOEY DUCK” (“geoduck”) would kill it off.

Have a great Saturday after regaining your appetites, everyone!

Oh Angela, I felt sorry for Elvis being subjected to the indignity of having to appear in and sing stuff like “Viva Las Vegas”, but you’ve shown me that there were even deeper depths of depravity to sink to. Poor King! (This coming from someone who actually bought the soundtrack album for “Kissing Cousins”) 😂

    • Hey Steve…When you say you haven’t seen an order wheel in a long time…Do you mean in a restaurant/ diner? Believe it or not, some old time East Coast diners still have them. And I was trying to look for a few of Jeffs past cartoons…because he’s used them in his drawings here more than once…I hope I can come across it…Lazy Susan’s are still around too…There’s a few Chinese restraurants that have them on their tables, and some of the more countrified places upstate and in PA still have them also. Fact: One of Lou’s nieces has them in both of her homes! They look cute…and I have to say, they are handy..The Elvis song? You know what it was like back then…They went with the flow…The whole “unsuccess” of 🎶Do the Crab 🎶 was due to the fact that they were trying to promote its as a new dance…We know that didn’t fly! Or crawl! 😂 But the album and the song itself weren’t complete failures..l think the song reached the top 20 or so on the Billboard Charts..nothing to sneeze at, right? I’d have to look it up…Too much “looking up” ..I may still be house bound, but this really wasn’t how I meant to spend the time! 😉 Elvis? Laughed all the way to the bank…no matter what he did! QUAHOG? Listen real closely…there’s the slightest bit of a “w” sound…and they are delicious…no matter what you call them! I wish you could taste what I do with them…And I laughed at your “LY at the of the word” taunt to David…I truLY believe the man WARELY looks to taunt anyone…We create all this CLAMoring on our own! Hope you’re having a good one, G…Later, Gator! 😉🍲🙋🏻

      • Yes, I meant in a diner. The last place I remember seeing one closed a couple of years ago. Your descriptions of the Lazy Susans made me think of having a Roulette Wheel dinner where you would spin it and then eat whatever stopped in front of you. 😂
Hope you’re out and about soon, but it looks like there’s plenty of New York baseball to watch today. 🙋🏻‍♂️

      • The Roulette Wheel dinner! Talk about a crap shoot! BET some people would starve! 😂😂 Lou’s niece makes very good use of hers…5 kids and the parents..Big table, and it makes it a lot more “civilized” to pass things! 😂I know I have a few around here someplace that were my Moms’…I should DIG them out! Yes, Baseball…The Yanks are done, a W…Mets on now. The Little Leaguers didn’t make it…😥 Maybe next year…⚾️🙋🏻

      • Thanks for the link, good story! I remember that very well, including the different versions of Revolution. For me, the ultimate single will always be “Strawberry Fields Forever” backed with “Penny Lane”.

The story mentioned Donovan. There’s a good clip from Rolling Stone where he tells the story of teaching John Lennon a guitar technique while they were in India, which Lennon went on to use on some songs. 🙋🏻‍♂️

      • I thought you’d like it, you’re welcome. I’m going to read this, thanks. I’m going to shout out to you later on the other page about that BBC article on the whole “Sad Song” Megillah…IDK..SMH! 🎶🙋🏻

      • SMH also on that BBC article. It will be a long time (although maybe not as long as we think) until AI can recognize the true meaning of a song, get a joke or make a pun. Especially songs with happy rhythms but sad lyrics, like “Walkin’ with my baby down by the San Francisco Bay.”
See you later, going out for awhile. Thanks again for the story. Didn’t even know Sat. Evening Post was still around! 🙋🏻‍♂️
