CARTOON ANSWER:

HE WANTED A SOFT MATTRESS. SHE DIDN’T AND WAS GOING TO – – –

DRIFSMATN = STAND FIRM

Happy Wednesday, Jumble players! Even though we’re at the midpoint of the week, the ease at which this mornings puzzle was solved made it seem more suitable for a Monday. FORMAT was the only word that required a quick double glance making it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. The oldest clue word of the bunch was FLASH which last appeared in gameplay on 2/18/16. BUTTON was another oldie but goodie that we last saw on 7/10/16. It was jumbled as TUNTOB which is very similar to the anagram we see today.

Our cartoon brings us to a store where we see two Jumble characters shopping for a new mattress. The male half is sprawled out on one that looks rather soft and plush as shown by the indentation that his body is making. The smile on his face lets us know that he seems to have found just the right one, but the look on his partners face means he’s in for a rude awakening. No matter how hard he tries to sell her on this particular model, the scowl and finger wagging are signs that he just might be better off shopping for a new couch!

There are two other mattresses in the panel, but Jeff added some fine detail work to make them appear different. The one on the left has 9-buttons and a tag with just a single squiggly line while the one on the right has 12 and a tag that has several. My favorite details in this piece are the slippers that the couple are wearing. This particular purveyor of mattresses must be a fancy outlet because they make you check your footwear at the door. It might also be a sales technique to keep you from running out the place when you see the price tag.

The letter layout for the final solution was 9-letters in length. Although I wasn’t able to blind solve it, the minimal amount of letters made it all too easy. Working the anagram backwards, I noticed FIR together which brought FIRM to mind. STAND was easily visible once I crossed out the letters. Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. ๐ŸŽถ DREAM, when you’re feeling blue…DREAM, that’s the thing to do. Just watch the smoke rings rise in the air…You’ll find your share of memories there…So DREAM, when the day is through…DREAM, and they might come true…Things never are as bad as they seem…So DREAM, DREAM, DREAM…๐ŸŽถ “Dream – Frank Sinatra 1945

๐Ÿ’ค ๐Ÿ›Œ Of course we’ve all been here before, a purchase such as this,
A Mattress isn’t something that you FLASH by hit or miss…
I DRINK a lot of coffee..I sit up in my bed…
I write, I read..I want assurance spillage won’t cause dread.
I usually have a FORMAT that I go through when I shop,
It’s more to me than having him just smile as he flops…
I’m all for this girl we see here, the firmness is the key,
The comfort from a mattress is my top priority.
Remember when the manufacturers’ BUTTONs would secure
The tufting on our mattresses? Good riddance that’s for sure…
Today it’s done by sewing, a smoother surface lies…
These things are all important when a new mattress I buy.
So I agree that while his input is of my concern…
The bottom line is comfort, and with comfort I STAND FIRM ๐Ÿ›Œ๐Ÿ’ค

It’s Wednesday, and we’ve managed to BUY ourselves another easy, breezy entry. It seems like we can just LIE BACK and take a REST, because today, the Jumble Duo has given us another gift! And once again, the dialogue, the question, and the descriptive cartoon, have made this a SOFT SELL! Or a FIRM SELL! Do you remember back on August 7th, when Jeff and David had us dealing with MATTRESSES during that visit to the Hotel? Well today, we’re not shopping for such a KING SIZED order…Today we see a couple MATTRESS shopping…He’s happy with falling DEEP into one, but she’s the BEDDER shopper, and she’s not falling for any DOUBLE talk! She knows that with a MATTRESS like this? They’ll be feeling like three SHEETS to the wind in no time, and she’s got her mind MADE UP…So, in answer to our question…What’s she going to do? STAND FIRM! Wrap it up, we’ll take it! Good one, David! You’ve made another SALE!

Ok, eye candy…We have three Purple MATTRESSES. That’s a NIGHTMARE in itself…We see the ubiquitous TAGS on the two MATTRESSES in the background, but I guess his foot is RESTING upon the one at front. But there’s no TUFTING at all showing on the front MODEL either, as there is on the others. Hey…wait a SECOND! Just what is he lying on anyway? This guy really doesn’t have a clue does he? No wonder she’s looking at him like he’s DREAMING! Good thing he’s not SHOPPING alone..he’d be in for a real rude AWAKENING! But let’s put all that to BED, and go with our guys pants. They don’t match his shirt, which is purple, but If you look real closely, you’ll see that WOVEN into the light blue MATERIAL, there’s a jacquard pattern…And I don’t think Jeff’s ever SPRUNG that on us before. Hmm…Jeff? Is this guy in Pajama pants? As it is, they both do seem to be wearing slippers! So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…You’ll always need patience when MATTRESS shopping, but it’ll PAY off…Because even though it’s no BED of roses? In the end, the SNUGGLE is real! ๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ›Œ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Angela–I posted before yours appeared on my screen.
Great Sinatra song. Didn’t the Everly Brothers also do a “Dream, Dream” song?
I don’t have colour cartoons unless I go to a web site which I don’t like, so thanks for pointing out details I would otherwise not see. I cannot imagine a purple mattress even though it would always be covered by other materials.
I think the answer to the issues raised in your poem would be one of those adjustable mattresses with controls that allow firm on one side and soft on the other. I won’t use the brand name I am familiar with but it begins with T
Great tennis last night —Serena was superb and Rafa pulled it off after losing 6-0 in the first set. I was very worried and have to admit I did not stay up to see the ending.Heat advisory in effect up here so I think I’ll postpone cycling until tomorrow. Enjoy the day all.

      • LOL…Good Morning, Earl. I was just posting to you about the auto correct at the exact same time you posted this..9:43! Yes, the Everly Brothers recorded..๐ŸŽถAll I Have To Do Is Dream๐ŸŽถ Kudos! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป It’s a nice oldie too! Thanks, I’ll keep it in mind for the future…You’re welcome, but yes, purple mattresses all..Yikes! Mattress pads or not…Yikes! LOL..Funny you mention the adjustable mattresses. Between my home here, and the one in Florida, I have nine bedrooms…It’s a lot of mattresses! I’m always on the lookout! LOL..So I do have those types of mattresses in two of my rooms. They are convenient! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I stayed up to watch Rafa last night. I was already up with the baseball game..He was brilliant! And I’m so happy for him…As for Miss Serena? What can be said? She keeps amazing me, and I give her such credit for ignoring all the nonsense and just playing her heart out. Fingers crossed, right? Cycling? I wouldn’t even go out to place the mail! It’s horrendous. Do you get hit with the humidity we do downstate? That’s making it so much worse. You can’t even take a breath outside…But again, I’ll take this over the flooding that our neighbors across the country are dealing with…It’s so saddening. So, get a good book, turn on the music, and stay indoors, Earl…This too shall pass! Have a good one! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  2. A new FORMAT drove the IT guy to DRINK too much and he hit the wrong BUTTON causing a FLASH of incomprehensible jibberish to appear on his screen.
Interesting comments Mike. I agree it was an easy puzzle for Wednesday. I was pretty sure one of the words in the solution was going to be FIRM so when I crossed those out. STAND became obvious. A clever answer since we normally do not associate STAND with a mattress.
I did not notice the slippers until you pointed them out. My take on that? Mattress stores like you to test their products and will either place a plastic covering on the part of the mattress where your feet will be or ask you to wear slippers while testing mattresses.
I wanted to use JIBBERISH in my sentence instead of NONSENSE, but auto-correct kept telling me NO. Any ideas??

    • Good Morning, Earl. I have to turn mine on and off, because it doesn’t accept the PUNny spelling of most of my words. You could try that. Let’s see if I can edit it in for you…Great sentence. BTW..The IT angle is brilliant! ๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • The slippers were new to me, Earl. But then again I havenโ€™t shopped for a new mattress in many years. My Tempur-pedic cost a small fortune, but itโ€™s one of the best investments Iโ€™ve ever made. Great sentence as always, my friend. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Good morning. Thanks Mike on all your info. Ditto on everything you said. Angela, nice work on the song, poem and puns. You’re a fan of old blue eyes, I would lean to the Everly Brothers for the song. Earl, terrific as usual. Today’s jumble was a typical Monday one. I breezed right through the words and had a blind solve. Am off to A/C, the ride through the Brooklyn streets is murder, especially since it’s just the second day the kids are back to school. If there are mistakes it’s because of the bumpy ride. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn! And thank you so much! LOL..Read above, I just told Earl that I’ll go with the choice of you both next time around, ok? ๐Ÿ˜‰ And yes, a BIG fan of Ole’ Blue Eyes..How’d you know? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Totally agree, easy breezy puzzle today, a gift. Anyway, Brooklyn streets! LOL…It’ll never change, right? It is what it is! You got a great day for AC! You’ll get to stay indoors and be cool, and win some money to boot! Good Luck, and Enjoy! Talk to you later …โ™ ๏ธโ™ฅ๏ธโ™ฆ๏ธโ™ ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  4. Monday sort of puzzle today. Paused at format but figured out the rest of the words and cartoon easily. Not only did the Everly Brothers “Dream Dream Dream” but they also “Wake Up Little Susie”. Happy Wednesday to all.

  5. Hi all – Pretty instant solve on everything today. I first saw FATHOM, but the โ€˜Rโ€™ showed it was FORMAT, which I think I saw quickly from having had to format so much computer media over the years, from floppy disks to drives and partitions. In fact, I was thinking of a sentence much like Earlโ€™s:

The programmer shouldnโ€™t have had that DRINK, because he accidentally hit the FORMAT BUTTON on the FLASH drive, wiping out a monthโ€™s worth of work.
(He also didnโ€™t do his backups, so he got fired).

Miike, you made me laugh with the slippers keeping the customers from fleeing the high prices, and the fact that heโ€™s going to have to shop for a new couch also. Not more marital discord after yesterday, please! ๐Ÿ˜‚ And also you and Angela both coming up with โ€œrude awakening.โ€

Angela, for you and others who like your song, let me put in this link for โ€œDreamโ€ by the Pied Pipers. Have you seen it? It shows up on the PBS big band special occasionally:

    Have a great day, everyone!

For those people who find it amusing that 60โ€™s music is now heard at Safeway and the 99-cent store (and Iโ€™m one of them), well, if you grew up with the music of the 80โ€™s, your turn has come! Listening to a radio commercial for a bank offering $0 fees on their services, the song playing in the background was The Fixxโ€™s โ€œSaved By Zeroโ€! ๐Ÿ˜‚

    • Hey, G. I blinked real quick at Fathom too..very fleeting! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Great sentence..๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Kudos! And I know rude awakening was calling your name too.. You just didn’t want to go three on that match, huh? ๐Ÿ˜‰ The Pied Pipers had the sweetest sounds…This clip is a classic. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป I have a bunch of their work…As a solo act, with Sinatra, (BMH), and a lot with the Dorsey Brothers…That was music! Have a good one, G. See ya later on deck…๐Ÿ›Œ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Thanks, David and Jeff. This was fun and helpful. Made me think of Lelia moving her letter tiles around.
I’ve learned a lot on this blog, but I think the most important factor for me has been taking the time to work through the tough ones. As Frederick Douglass said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
