CARTOON ANSWER:

THE NEW EMPLOYEE AT THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT WAS A —

NEYGUFEONDBLER = BUNDLE OF ENERGY

Good morning everyone and happy Wednesday!  We’re at the midpoint of the week and the puzzles have been absolutely fantastic so far.  Today’s puzzle continued the trend of unique and fresh clue words that weren’t pushovers.  BEYOND would be my pick for the most difficult of the bunch, and it took me a few minutes before coming into view.  BLAZER also resisted a bit but I think I was just frustrated from not solving BEYOND as fast as I would have liked.  With all of the clue words completed, it was time for the cartoon!  After reading the dialogue and sentence and looking at my letters, nothing came to mind which was very puzzling.  BLUNDER was the only word I saw but there were no 7-letter words in the solution.  My best bet was to solve the 2-letter word and go from there.  I tried ON first but couldn’t find anything else so I went to OF.  ENERGY finally jumped out at me leaving BUNDLE for the finish.  Did you notice that Jeff gave a name to the character on the left (Jere Jenkins)?  You’d need a magnifying glass to read his name tag or just look at the attached picture.  I did a quick search for Mr. Jenkins, however; I didn’t come up with anything relevant so perhaps he’s a friend or fan of the puzzle.  Also present was the “I ❀️ Jumble” coffee mug which can purchased at the link below.   It’s a great mug and I use mine every morning to display my Jumble pride.  Have a wonderful Wednesday and I’ll see you tomorrow!  πŸ™‚

  1. The clue words went OK except for Beyond, which I had to back into. I thought the sign – 21 days without an accident – was very funny, though not too comforting for those of us who live near nuclear power plants. I couldn’t see the name tag so thanks, Mike, for showing this fun detail.

  2. I had no problem with the clue words or the Jumble solution today–was able to do it all without writing anything down–my goal every day. Thanks for the details which I cannot see in my paper’s small print. I’m sure it is a coincidence, but nuclear power and nuclear waste was in the news today

    • Good morning, Earl! Congratulations on solving without writing it down. There was no chance of me doing that with today’s puzzle. I haven’t read my newspaper yet so I’m not sure what the article was. I always read the sports and do the puzzles first, but I’ll get there. It was nice hearing from you! πŸ˜€

    • Good morning, Mike. Good morning, Everyone. I’m with Earl on this. I blew right through the puzzle, especially the answer! I even had 2 texts, 1 phone call stating the puzzle was all me! UH no, I know nothing about nuclear power, I finally shaved the beard now that the Rangers πŸ’”πŸ˜’ lost, I’d never wear those colors together, I don’t have that little pot belly, im not blonde, no RATIONAL person would deny me coffee, and 21 days without an accident? HA…I should be so lucky! They think they know me so well! So what’s left? Bundle of (nervous) Energy? Please…..
And Earl, you’re right about the news. Tunnel collapse, Washington state., nuclear waste plant. Guess that sign goes back to zero! Hope we all have a great day! πŸ™‹πŸ»

  3. Good morning all. I detect a theme here. I also was stuck on beyond so I went to the cartoon and immediately got the answer. Now knowing the letters I needed,I was able to go beyond being stuck. I never look at the cartoon unless I’m stuck on the words where some people go to the cartoon first. Until tomorrow stay well.

  4. No trouble with the clue words today but did have to take out the paper and pencil for the cartoon answer.. I too figured out “of ” first and knew the first word had to begin with a consonant because of the “a” in the clue words. Bundle came to me first and then energy was obvious. It’s all obvious once we know the answers. Have a happy Wednesday everyone.

  5. I’ll do you one better – I solved BEYOND twice, because when I didn’t see the puzzle answer and went back to write down the letters, I had already forgotten it. It was the only word that caused a pause.
Trust me, Mike, I HAVE a magnifying glass, and it’s not sufficient.
Mike, Angela, speaking of coffee (nice coincidence), today my local Peet’s was offering a special SF Giants blend. I told them they’d have to discount it because it leaves a bitter aftertaste.
Ok, Angela, up and ATOM. Those must have been your NUCLEAR family members that told you you resemble the puzzle.

    • Steve..Good afternoon, or good morning? (I have a lot of trouble with the math)…You, sir, are Beyond the Pale! What is Peets? I’m figuring a coffee house? (Notice I didn’t use the colloquial ‘assume’, …just covering my bases here)! If that scenario you mentioned really took place, I would give you discounted coffee for the rest of the season! Great line. Way on point! . SWEEEEEEEEET!!! Up and ATOM , good one.. NUCLEAR family? Eh, not so much. But A for effort. Ok. Enough with the accolades. (We can see you grinning from here). Now,…The Texas Rangers? In the throes of my sorrow, (and trust me, it was throes), you make such light of my loss last night? . Henrik, broke my heart. The Blue lackluster performance broke my heart. The under enthusiastic fans broke my heart. Anderson broke my heart….Do you see where I’m going here? πŸ’” And then you say…”Oh hi…Texas Rangers”. That was a knife to the heart. . It was all I could do to pick up the remaining shards and cry once more into this (damned) coconut water! “Lama Sabachtani”? (I’ll wait while you look it up). Anyway, I’m going to need some time to get over the loss, so please be nice, ok? Go above and beyond…. (Did I mention Henrik soooo broke my heart)? Ok, I’m going to give you a shot at redemption. 🎼 “Somewhere beyond… No more sailing, so long sailing, bye bye sailing….🎼 (I switched keyboards…I lost my music notes)! So, you’re on deck. Oh and just as a parting shot…”Go Ducks”. I may forgive, but I’m still working on the forget! Texas Rangers, indeed! πŸ’” πŸ™‹πŸ». (πŸ˜‰)

Sorry about the Rangers, but I’ve had a long time to get over the Sharks. Go Oilers, win the cup with the Sharks-fired coach Todd McLellan and staff! (Ok, maybe not quite over it).
To make amends I hope, I’ll try the song without looking anything up – “Beyond the Sea” by your boy Frankie, possibly written by Paul Anka?

      • Lefty, If you were truly sorry about the Rangers, you would have opened with it. I think you just enjoy waving that red cape, and I’m worse for taking the bait! Re-peeted it? Another very good one! They really do owe you a cup on the house! I know you’re hurting too about your Sharks, but man up! Obviously not long enough! 🎢 Beyond the Sea🎢. Yep. Classic. Bobby Darin had a great rendition too. In fact his version is on my playlist. Oh and when referencing Frankie? Better if you say…”my Man”, and it couldn’t hurt if you bowed your head also. πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Angela – (Ever notice when we start posting, Mike just quietly slips away? He MUST be as smart as he sounds!)
Seriously, I’m consulting the expert here: Wikipedia has no listing of your MAN Frank Sinatra performing “Beyond the Sea”, and every post on youtube that lists it is immediately filled with comments that say “That’s Bobby Darin, you moron!”. Are we mistaken – can you enlighten us?

My real life is going to start soon – may have to persue this later.

      • Wheaties Man, Ever notice everyone slips away? I don’t know where you’re looking, an Oakland Wikipedia page? I’ll send the link. I have it on an old album. So wait, it actually says…”Bobby Darin, You moron”? Oh, so it is Oakland? As for Mike, he reads it all. He shakes his head a lot more lately, but he reads it all. The Oakland comment wasn’t nice, I take it back. Play nice, ok? πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Yes, google shows you those Youtube videos that say Sinatra Beyond the Sea, comments all say it’s Bobby Darin. Some do sound like Sinatra to me.
I also found this on Yahoo answers, for whatever it may be worth (talk about sacrilegious):
“Actually, “Beyond the Sea” was a hit by Bobby Darin in 1960. It was originally released as a single, but you can find it on any “greatest hits” album or “hit singles” album. Most people think that Ol’ Blue Eyes sang it… but it seems that it is just a case of mistaken identity- by all accounts, Frank never recorded this one, and if he did, it was never released. “

      • I hooked the iPad up to a speaker. It sounds a little different from the one I always listen to, but I think this IS Bobby Darin. And I’m reading what you’re reading. This is really wild. I’m going to make a few calls. I was lucky enough to see him perform. Many times. I swear I can HEAR his rendition. Did I “see” him sing it? He even threw in this little hook at the end. I am so not up to going through all this vinyl tonight to see if it’s in there somewhere. But I’m going to have to. Thanks for the research. πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • This just occurred to me; a possible source of confusion could be that I’m sure Bobby Darin would have been greatly influenced by Sinatra and could have been patterning his phrasing, conciously or unconsciously on the Master -especially since Darin wanted to be more of a big band singer than rock and roll, evidenced by his recording a song like Mack the Knife.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Sure, he did copy a lot of Sinatra’s phrasing and timing, mannerisms too. But Darin was a great talent in his own right. Just had baggage. But that still doesn’t explain this. These articles actually say people all thought he sang the song, but he never did.. I can still swear I have the album! I made one call. Nada. He told me “look it up””! It’s ‘gotta wait ’till trow. I’m watching the Oilers and I’m prob not even going to make it to the 2nd period. Throwing in the towel. Thanks for all the info. Good night, Gracie πŸ™‹πŸ»

I hope you were hiding your eyes in the 9th inning of Giants/Mets. Oy! The Giants may have invented the term “Bad win”.

      • 🎢Lama lama Lama, lama lama ding dong!🎢 I wasn’t sure if I was spelling it right and spell check was giving me a very hard time! Saba whata? Yes, I’ll give it to you, def dramatic. And maybe as a Catholic, slightly sacrilegious too, I don’t know. But I go to it from time to time for emphasis. You’re ok with the sarcasm, I kind of started it. But truce, ok? 9th inning. Only the Mets. You can only hide your eyes for so long, and as a die hard Met fan, I’ve developed indentation marks right above the eyebrows. I just before said, that when they’re good, they’re sooooo good. And when they’re bad…they give all new meaning to, “God, kill me now”. The struggle is real. And as for learning new things, never too old. πŸ™‹πŸ»

Warriors, yes, and at least the A’s have finally re-committed to Oakland, removing the third-deck tarps, installing food trucks and a Bill-King-tribute “Holy Toledo” sign, and promising a stadium decision this year, good vibes we haven’t seen since the Haas family.

  7. Hi Mike et al, not a quick solve today. The third clue word was BEYOND me! The cartoon gave the answer away with the guy being a bundle of energy and the power plant being a source of energy. So why couldn’t I think of energy? I think I won’t do the Jumble at 2 a.m. anymore. ….. 10:15 a.m. here. Yep, I kept wanting to β€œboldly” go or have no β€œbodily” harm, but BEYOND was BEYOND me. …. Woo Hoo! I just read the site so now rather than feeling bad about not getting BEYOND, I feel like one of the gang! Thanks, Mike, for telling us that it gave you a hard time, too, and again for a picture showing such great detail.
Enjoy the rest of your day. See you tomorrow.
