Jumble Answers for 01/27/2019

Good Morning, Everyone!   🎶ABC…IT’S EASY AS 1-2-3🎶  – The Jackson Five 1970 https://tinyurl.com/y8ct94cn

🎶 You think that I don’t even mean a single WORD I say…It’s only WORDS and WORDS are all I have…to take your heart away…It’s only WORDS…and WORDS are all I have to take your heart away…🎶 “Words” – The Bee Gees 1968 https://tinyurl.com/yafv2v8x

🔠 I guess there’s nothing UNFAIR ’bout being at your best,
But using as an OUTLET the boasting and the jest…
Can take away your HEYDAY despite the WISDOM held,
If you’re faced with some tiles that leave you nothing spelled…
This guy seems like a VANDAL, he’s out to steal the show,
A Champion the last time don’t mean he’s good to go…
So what remains for us to see is if a DOCTOR’s due,
If just in case this guy don’t win…and then we’ll see ensue…
Him be brought down a peg or two, he won’t be the big hit,
The letter of the law dictates…YOU HAVE MY WORD ON IT 🔠

Looking thorough the Archives for today’s WORDS, I was surprised to see how many past puzzles dealt with DOCTORs. There were at least 10, but oddly enough, I couldn’t find the “Word” DOCTOR. Does that seem possible? Nor could I find HEYDAY or VANDAL. And trust me, I went UP and DOWN the lists…But I did find the other three, and our most recent is OUTLET, having last appeared on March 4th, ’18. Once again, as y’day, each of today’s words called for a second look, but none of them drew a PASS…And most of the Early Birds were on BOARD with choosing HEYDAY as the word that caused the most blinks… Ok. And now I’m UP for our cartoon…

Today we find ourselves attending the SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP, https://tinyurl.com/y97hfe9q where we see the 2018 reigning champ, Nigel Richards  https://tinyurl.com/yb98k3ug  sitting across from his female opponent and SPELLING out to her his intention to win…She doesn’t seem that receptive though, and you can READ a little anger in her expression. She’s kind of GRIDding her teeth…Three people are watching this all go DOWN: The MC, who’s voicing Nigel’s confidence, the reigning “Fastest Jumbler” Paul Lockwood, who was featured in the Jumble of October 16th, EGGS SCRAMBLED, and our own esteemed WORDsmith, David L Hoyt. Knowing WORD had to be one of our answer entries, I unSCRABBLED the rest as such…There’s Nigel’s assurance, his opponents’ use of the word PROMISES, the MC being so impressed and the word GUARANTEE in our questionSoI deciphered that the Champ’s telling her…YOU HAVE MY WORD ON IT! Good one, David! You didn’t exactly SPELL it out for us, but you didn’t let us DOWN, either

Ok, eye candy…With just a light Cream shading at the background, where our two PLAYERS are seated, today’s panel comes ACROSS nicely colored. Nigel, dressed in a Black T-shirt, should have a little more Gray in his hair, and a lot more in his beard…but it may be POINTless to mention, since we know that the “color man” doesn’t really worry about accuracy as much as we do…His female opponent, dressed in a Purple blouse, sports a very chic Gray spiky hair cut. At front, going ACROSS LEFT to RIGHT, there’s the mustachioed MC, wearing a Navy tux with a red bow tie, Paul, in a Green dress shirt, and David, also in Purple. Everyone’s wearing eyeglasses, except for Nigel. We see the SCRABBLE BOARD in Yellow, atop a Brown table, and each PLAYER has their TILES lined up on the trays before them. My eye candy? Nigel’s holding a TILE…and it’d be really uTILE if I could name it. I want to say it’s an “O”, since I can see a rounded top, and a #1 on it, but I think I see a STAR too…And considering that the TILES are numbered at the lower right hand corner, I’m at a loss for WORDS…Anybody? Can you READ any more into it than I can?…(And while you’re at it, does anyone else think that maybe the answer should have been in quotes)? So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…In SCRABBLE it’s all fun and games…until someone loses an “I”! 🔠🙋🏻

***PLEASE NOTE: I accidentally sent the Email out with the same link for both the Scrabble Championship and Nigel Richards. My apologies. It’s been corrected above. 🙋🏻

  1. Hi all, wherever you are – (I got the email as usual, hope others aren’t having a problem.) The first word was UNFAIR only if you didn’t use the ‘UN’ trick.
VANDAL took a couple of jumbles, as did HEYDAY, which I had to look up to confirm that the spelling was correct.
The answer took awhile because of all the possibilities, and none of them could be HIM or HIS. I had THE as the first word, but it wasn’t until I saw that YOU could go there that the solution finally showed up.

In the small picture in my newspaper, the oddest thing is the guy’s beard. It looks like a fake made out of scrabble tiles, but blowing it up onlline, it seems real. I don’t think I really want a closer look.
Angela, the expanded picture in the Orlando paper shows me that the tile he’s holding has a value of 10, and it must be a ‘Q’. The zero of the 10 is so small the ink has bled a little giving that ‘star’ impression.

    Have a great Sunday, everyone!

    • Hey Steve…BINGO! I mean SCRABBLE! Thank you! 👏🏻👏🏻 It’s definitely a “Q”. I went back to look, and yes, you’re right, it’s a zero. And the more I expanded, you can make it out as such. I don’t know why it didn’t hit me this morning, and I definitely dropped the TILE on this one! FYI: If you Google Nigel Richards, you’ll find a lot of pictures of him – with and without his beard – which is what prompted me to mention the gray hair. He has a huge beard, and it’s mostly gray, with brown DOWN THE MIDDLE! 😂 Seriously! But Jeff did well in capturing his essence. I know I teased the man a bit in my poem, but that was solely to get a working rhythm of today’s words, which trust me, weren’t the most user-friendly! For the record, my hat’s off to the man. Becoming World Champion Scrabble Player four times, is no easy feat. Doing it once alone, for that matter is nothing to sneeze at. And it’s said that he’s among the most successful players of all time. Kudos, Sir! 🏆 So any references I may have made to him, especially in my rhyme, were all tongue-in-cheek. It’s all just Show Business…Tks again, G…another mystery solved! Hope you’re having a great day…Ciao, Bello! 🔠🙋🏻

  2. Hi Everyone –
The answer took some time. Word and have – one of the few words I could think of with a v – came to mind, but I didn’t know what to do with the 2 y’s. I finally thought of my and the answer soon followed.

    • Hi Caroline. Good Afternoon. I’m hearing a lot of the same. The smaller words were harder to figure out than the 2 4-letter ones, which is a bit of a change, right? It really is a very clever puzzle, but I’m still thinking that as a quote from Nigel, maybe it should have been in quotes. That might have made it easier to solve. Just my take on it. Glad you stuck with it, and I hope you’re enjoying your day! 🔠🙋🏻

  3. I’m fortunate enough to get a plethora of Jumble puzzles in my newspaper…in color to boot. Besides this one here that we all do daily, on Saturdays I get the TV JUMBLE, and on Sundays I get the 6-word puzzle, plus the Jumble for Kids, which prints Black and White, and invites the Kids to “Color Me”. Today’s Kids puzzle features the Levi Brothers and their Jeans! The dialogue is very amusing, and includes a pun, and the answer is exceptionally cute and clever. The cartoon rivals the ones we’ve had…it’s pure Jeff-Genius! The Orlando Sentinel, that we’ve been using as our go-to on-line site, has the puzzle listed, but for some reason it won’t allow me to access it. I wanted so badly to try to copy it some way and show it to you all. but when it opens, I’m getting a message saying I’ve reached my “monthly free limit”. Not looking to upset the Gods, I’m not pursuing it any further, but I’ve posted the link here. Maybe you may have better luck. (My paper won’t allow me to link it either, unless I do it as an email) Anyway, if anyone’s interested, give it a shot, because the puzzles a definite ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! 🙋🏻

      • Tks, Steve..Once again, I didn’t even think to look there…And I’ve bookmarked it right along side the Sentinel too….My head’s so not in it today. Not really so much of a challenge, Steve. All my Littles got the second word right away, and then I told them to disregard the cartoon and read the dialogue again…and THINK…(Literally and figuratively)! LOL..The Bigger Littles got it immediately…My Budding Jumblers! I’m soooo proud! And they loved the pun…Which I’ve taught them all is the only true way in life..!!! 😂😂🙋🏻

  4. Speaking of vandal, there was a leader of a polka band in Cleveland,in the 50’s,named Johnny Vadnal, who played accordion along with his brother,Frankie, who played guitar.

      • Thanks for the link, he and Johnny Pecon, another Cleveland polka player, were the inspiration to my learning to play the accordion, which I m still playing, and actually entertained the Grand Prairie Assisted Living Birthday Party on Friday.

        • Hi Prof. You’re very welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed it. And I think it’s great that you’re still out there playing…Hope you’re having a good night! 🎹🙋🏻

  5. Good afternoon. Out for the day and had to take the paper with me. Will read everybody later on tonight. Had a devil of a time with the words but finally got them all. The cartoon answer was a combined effort by my youngest son and daughter-in-law. All three of us were trying to get the answer. It was a fun time. Until later or tomorrow stay well.

    • Hey Brooklyn. Glad you had a day out with your kids, and a fun time with the puzzle. Hope your night’s going well. 🔠🙋🏻
