Jumble Answers for 09/26/2018

Happy Wednesday, Jumble aficionados! We’re at the midpoint of the week and the masterminds behind the puzzle decided to challenge us once again with a word in quotes. Today’s game was on the easier side though, making it a great chance to redeem yourself if Monday’s brain-buster proved to be a little too difficult to decipher.

Our clue words were recycled favorites, but the anagrams were new. This is a rare morning where one of the 5-letter words took me the longest to figure out. At first glance, YARNO looked like ORNERY for some reason. Knowing that I was working with one of the 5-letter words allowed me to quickly dismiss my guess so I decided to do a few self-jumbles in the margin of my paper. It didn’t take too long before it came into view but the extra effort made it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. I ran into a similar problem with ENTITY looking like NINETY, but that one came to mind after a few short seconds.

The setting for today’s cartoon brings us to a beach where we see three Jumble characters on horseback. The cartoon sentence informs us that our characters are taking a tour and the dialogue gives us the itinerary. The guide tells the couple that the tour will start out at the beach and will conclude atop a mountain where they’ll enjoy a view of the sunset. The couple can be seen giving a thumbs up to indicate that they approve of the plan and their dialogue indicates that they’re ready to begin.

There were a few details in today’s panel that caught my attention. The hoof prints in the soft sand were my favorite as they added an element of realism to the drawing. The waves in the background gave us a partial glimpse of the beach scene that they would soon be riding along but missing was the sinking sailboat that Jeff often adds to his work. That final detail that I noticed was a tiny “M” on the gentleman’s cap. My guess is that it’s the University of Michigan’s football logo, but I’ve been wrong before. If you have any thoughts, be sure to leave a comment below!

The letter layout for the final solution was 10-letters in length. I immediately saw IDE neatly placed together at the rear of the anagram which brought RIDE to mind. TIME came next leaving ON for the finish. Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. Great minds think alike.Rayon had me stumped as I also was thinking ornery .Likewise with entity looking like ninety to me.After rearranging ninety into entity, and having gotten goose and miffed,I was able to get the ride on time solution and work backwards to rayon.Another day away from my newspaper but back this afternoon,Thanks for the online link.

  2. ๐ŸŽถ Cause I SADDLE up my HORSE…And I RIDE into the city. I make a lot of noise, ‘Cause the girls they are so pretty. RIDING up and down Broadway, on my old stud Leroy….And the girls say…Save a HORSE, RIDE a cowboy…Everybody says…Save a HORSE, ride a cowboy…๐ŸŽถ “Save a Horse (Ride A Cowboy” – Big and Rich 2004

๐ŸŽ Sunset seen from a mountainside is truly worth the climb,
One’s hardly disappointed, nor does MIFFED come into mind…
But getting there on horseback, truly has its ups and downs,
A person prone to vertigo’s much better on the ground.
Once we embarked on such a trek, but I thought we were walkin’
From car to where we’d look out…should have listened to them talkin’,
“No, silly GOOSE, we’re riding up, those RAYON pants won’t do…”
“By riding, I thought in a car…then getting out to view…
I think I’d rather stay the ENTITY not on the horse,
A climb like that on horseback’s going vertigo to cause…
I’ll stay down here, watch the sun set, and I’ll feel quite sublime…
You take the tour, I’ll sit it out..we’ll both be “RIDE” ON TIME”!๐ŸŽ

With all of today’s words being old favorites, one stood out like a sore thumb! Or should I say a SADDLE SORE thumb! Exactly a year ago today, September 26, 2017, we had the word MIFFED! Only that day it was RIDDEN as FIMDEF! So close to today’s FIDMEF! Just a reversal of the MD! Quirky, right? But we didn’t need a Doctor…Our words were easy breezy and nothing to get MIFFED over…

Our solution today? Another EASY RIDER..I mean RIDE. In fact, my favorite early morning Jumbler, actually called it a gROANer! He’s learning! We were given so many clues in the dialogue and question…A Tour on HORSEBACK, “We’re on SCHEDULE, “We’re ALL READY”. TIME and TIME again, we see the hints…Finding ourselves outdoors, with two tourists and their guide, we see that they’re MOUNTAINED upon their horses, about to embark on a RIDE along the beach and then up the Mountain to view the SUNSET… Everyone’s giving the thumbs up, and there’s no FOALing around…So the TOUR would start…”RIDE” ON TIME! Good one, David! It didn’t take much HORSE sense to get this one!

Ok, eye candy! Beautiful ๐ŸŽถPurple Mountains Majesty…๐ŸŽถ. The mountains are a beautiful purple shade. The horses’ STEEP-set eyes? You can tell they know what’s aHEAD…I’m sure this ain’t their first RODEO! The Water in the background is a pretty shade of Blue, and Jeff’s DRAWN it so that we can see soft rippling…I closed my eyes, and for a moment, I even thought I HERD it flowing…I notice only the female tourist seems to be wearing BOOTS though. CUD be a problem….SHODdy decision, IMO…Our horses are all shades of Brown, but maybe that was a SPUR of the moment decision…And we see the University of Michigan cap atop our mans MANE…”GO BLUE”!…despite the hat being Black and White…(LAME, right? Jeff, you’ve got to speak with this guy)! ๐Ÿ˜‰ But the candy for me today? What can be cuter than the guides’ hair? She’s wearing it in a PONY TAIL! So, There you have it, Folks! Done! Have a great day, Everyone! I’m going to REIN this all in now…And SADDLE do it for today! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Angela–I”m no sure what’s going on with posts but yours did not show up when I replied to Mike and as I indicated, I did not get an e-mail with his comments…..
Song? You are probably not old enough to know “Back in the Saddle Again:”by Gene Autry—the famous Singing Cowboy and owner of a baseball team out west.
That song came to me immediately when I saw the cartoon. I checked the cartoon out in colour and thought one of the horses was, if not white,, a very light tan, but my colour sense is not great.
Puns all over the range today, well done.
Your eye candy was interesting as well. Did you mention the guide’s “pony” tail by the way? I’ll have to go back and check—sure did, I missed it.
Thunder boomers up here last night and today. No walking or biking until much later. Have a great day, all.

      • Earl..you have me LOL! I’m not old enough to remember most of the songs I go with! I just inherited my Father’s deep love of music, and I spent most of my life, when I wasn’t writing, together with Him researching it all. After I lost Him, I really delved into it…Your choice is excellent! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป I just happen to really like this Cowboy song, and think it’s funny as all get out, so it immediately came to me this morning…Thanks for the Shout Outs, and your sentence tickled me, because I see a lot of those GOOSE themed kitchen things in catalogs…And they always give me a laugh! We had horrendous storms all day y’day, and serious flooding all over the 5 Boros. It’s still raining a little now, and more’s predicted for later tonight..Stay safe, and enjoy the day, Earl! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Earl..Sorry. I forgot to add. The center horse is a light beige color, and mottled. I just lumped them all in as “shades of brown” so that I could make use of the SPUR pun.. But your observation is right on point! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Hey Brooklyn…How’re doing? I can tell you now, it’s definitely no Gene Autry! You might get a laugh out of it, but it’s…different! ๐Ÿ˜‚ It’s just a happy tune..Let me know what you think..On another note, deGrom “done us proud”, huh? I’d love to see him get the Cy Young…Hope you’re having a good night…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Angela–I was listening to Spectrum’s Music Channel today and my selection was “Golden Oldies” I heard, for the first time in years., the perfect song for that cartoon where the boxer is proposing:: “This Diamond Ring” by Gary Lewis,
He is/was the son of Jerry Lewis and had a few hits

      • Hi Earl..I’m sorry, I didn’t see this right away. I had a boat load of mail come in all at once..Yes, I do know of that song, I have a 45 of it. Him and his group, The Playboys. And yes, it would have been a very good choice! I had to go back and see what I had chosen for the puzzle last Thursday. Less than a week, and I can’t even remember! I’m shot! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I went with the ๐ŸŽถRing-A-Ding -Ding๐ŸŽถ because of the Bell ringing, with a boxing match, plus the song dealt with a man thinking to propose. And you suggested Sinatra’s ๐ŸŽถLove and Marriage๐ŸŽถ to me…But I think this Gary Lewis song would have been a KNOCK OUT! You have no idea how I love the interest you and Paul have developed in the Music choices. Kudos! And PS..I also enjoy Spectrum’s Music Channels..So many genre choices ..I’m never without Music playing…Have a great night, Earl. We’re bracing for another big downpour tonight…I hope all goes well by you.. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • โ€œThis Diamond Ringโ€ written by the great NYC musician Al Kooper of The Blues Project and founder of Blood Sweat and Tears. He forgave the producer his bubblegum treatment of his blues song when the royalty checks came rolling in!

      • And there was controversay over whether it was really Gary Lewis singing, or did someone dub for him…Even then…”Can’t we all just get along”? ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Hey Earl..Good Morning…I think we both got caught up in the excitement of the moment y’day…(Maybe Steve did too! ๐Ÿ˜‰)…After everything calmed down last night, the song was playing in my head..and I realized…It’s aBOUT a break-up…They went down for the count! I guess we said “I do”…but in the song? She ended up saying..”I don’t”! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Ah…Love!..Always keeps ya on the ROPES, huh? Talk to you later..๐Ÿ’” ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. The very thought of a RAYON apron with a GOOSE pattern was an ENTITY which MIFFED the chef at the French restaurant.
Thanks for the details this AM, Mike. I did not notice the “M” on the cap but was a little surprised at the hooves of the horses—I checked the cartoon out in colour–usually horses’ hooves are white if the horse has white markings and black if the legs are black. Maybe Jeff just wanted his steeds to be colour-coordinated?
Again today—I get an early morning e-mail with the answers but no way to reply and then no regular e-mail with your comments. Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to go back and subscribe again??

    • Hi Earl…Good Morning! Jeff doesn’t color the panels. That’s why things are a little quirky sometimes. Great pick up on the horse coloring! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Youโ€™re not doing anything wrong, Earl. I replied to you yesterday but you must not have seen it.

Iโ€™ve decided to post the answers earlier in the morning for those folks that donโ€™t want to wait for me to do a full write up. I then go back when I have time and edit it to add a narrative and then open it up for comments. Itโ€™s not a perfect system, but Iโ€™m trying to make everyone happy. Sorry for the confusion.

      • Mike—I did see your comment but did not reply because I thought it was a “one-shot” and done kind of thing. I understand why you are posting answers early and I’m sure some appreciate that. I look forward to the commentary, etc. so I tend to wait for that. But I wonder why it is that I get the early e-mail but do not get the one with your comments? It would seem that if my name et. al. is in WordPress that I would get both. Sorry to take up your time with this because it isn’t a burning issue—I can always access the day’s Jumble and Comments by going to the day before and hitting “Next” in the top right.
Thanks for all you do to keep this site going, I am grateful.

  4. But who wants worms?? Paused at rayon this morning, otherwise no problem solving the other words and cartoon answer. What is the link to the online puzzle? I’ve been having trouble with my newspaper delivery the past few days and would like to have that as a backup. I’m hooked on Jumble. Happy Wednesday everyone.

  5. Hi all – Only Rayon took a second look. Then I was looking for HOOF, REIN or SHOE in the answer but had to write the letters to see RIDE.

Poor Rayon, Nylonโ€™s neglected second cousin. The only thing I can remember about it is that if you had rayon tires, youโ€™d have flat spots on the bottom in the morning that would go โ€œthump-thumpโ€ until youโ€™d driven half a mile or so.

I never knew there was any relation between a horseโ€™s color and its hooves; thanks for another new fact, Earl.!

I donโ€™t mean to NAG the Chronicle again, but Angela, you know Betty and my problem with the way they print the Jumble – we always see horses of a different color.
And please pass along my congratulations to your friend who came up with gROANer! Itโ€™s spectacular! Makes me wish he was a PALOMIN-O also. And noting all the colors makes me think that the beach is actually on a BAY; in fact Iโ€™d bet on it.

    Have a great day, everyone.!

It’s just not vey people-friendly. I mean you try to get down to the FIBER of it, and it doesn’t let you in…You get VISCOSE, and..? Shut out again…You try TEXT…TILE and TILE again..but you just can’t GENERATE that comfortableness…Sad..Anyway…My friend with the gROAN…Yes, he gave me a laugh, and MANEd my morning! I gave him a ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป! ..And I BET you had a grand old time HORSING around with your post today, didn’t you? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐ŸŽถBAY, BAY, Baby..Baby, Good BAY….๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

        ๐ŸŽตโ€Catskill ladies sing this song, โ€˜Hoo-hah! Hoo-hah!โ€™

      • …NEIGH, G…You’re way down the STRETCH on this one…In fact, you’ve lost me. This may be 6ยฐ of Hesitation! ๐Ÿ˜‚ We play that once in a while, too. Talk about a LONG SHOT! ..The closing song..think The Four Seasons..It may be a STRETCH too, But it’s a habit with us Board Members…anytime somebody says ..Bye Bye..one of the others goes into this..A lot of music gets thrown around…๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  6. Good evening. Going to skip everybody this fine night. I got you nice and early this morning but the little mark on the right side to bring everybody up was not there. I couldn’t even post so I gave up and just now checked to see if anything changed. And here I am. The hardest word for me today was Entity. All the others were instant reads. I was able to get the cartoon answer after awhile and was a little disappointed. It’s ok,but cute,I don’t think so. But then again it’s hard to be on point every time. These two guys are great at their job. They give us something to look forward to every day and I thank them for that. Until tomorrow stay well.

  7. I am daily Jumble lover, though I have been silently using your website to solve when I am stuck. Never commented here. Love the efforts taken by you when solving them and explaining. The comments are great too ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚
