GAUVE = VAGUE

TOMOT = MOTTO

RNINEW = WINNER

CROTHO = COHORT

CARTOON ANSWER:

WHEN THREE PEOPLE GOT INTO THE TWO-PERSON SUBMARINE, THE SUB WAS —

AGETTWIRHT = WATER-TIGHT

Good morning everyone and happy Tuesday!  The first three clue words were a piece of cake, but the fourth one gave me a real headache.  I tried staring at it for a bit but nothing was coming to mind.  Breaking out my notepad, it took seven attempts before COHORT came into view.  With all of the clue words solved, it was time to venture under the sea and marvel at the wonderful cartoon.  A sinister looking octopus can be seen glaring at three frightened tourists in a cramped capsule while another set of eyes in the shadows of a cave have also noticed the intruders.  I really liked that the columns were strewn about the ocean floor and half of the word “ATLANTIS” in block lettering was visible on a piece of the rubble.  The final solution wasn’t obvious due to the cryptic layout of the letters, but after finding WATER, the rest fell into place quickly.  Have a terrific Tuesday and I’ll sea you tomorrow!  πŸ™

  1. 🎢”So we sailed up to the sun, Till we found a sea of green, And we lived beneath the waves, In our Yellow Submarine…We all live in a Yellow Submarine, Yellow Submarine. Yellow Submarine…”🎢 Personal Submarines, the theme of today’s puzzle. I think SUB, I think sandwich, I think woofer, I think SUBlime…Personal Subs? Not only is my knowledge of them VAGUE, so is the cartoon I’m looking at. From what I can see, there’s a scowling octopus at the lowest depth, and another one is glaring from within a rock formation. The rest of the cartoon I can’t DETECT! KELP!! Is that a box, with part of the word Atlantis on it? Is there a key, or a shell… Is that a shovel, is that a cup or a can? I’m so not cartoon WINNER today, I’m totally lost at SEA here, and I TIDE! I really dug DEEP! The submarine shows 3 people squeezed into a 2 man vessel, and we SEA how uncomfortable they are. Cozy? Uh, not so much…That old MOTTO, “Two’s Company, Three’s a Crowd” comes to mind. Looks like there’s some places you just shouldn’t take all your COHORTs! Speaking of Cohort, while the other three words were easy, breezy, Cohort caused me to blink for a second. Even though I actually used it the other day in speaking, I can’t remember the last time I wrote it. So it took that blink before I got it to SINK in! Great scrambling by Dave on all today’s words. Eye candy? Some PRESSURE here, because I’ve done ABYSMALly with the cartoon. I’ll go with what I can SEA..the angry octopus. The solve: We immediately knew WATER would be one of the words, and TIGHT was the perfect play on words! They’re TIGHT in the sub, and of COURSE the sub has to be leak proof…”WATER TIGHT”! Another of Jeff’s CLAM dunks! (And I’m hoping Mike can be more sPACIFIC with the cartoon).
    Hoping Everyone WAKEs to a beautiful day! Enjoy! 🌞 πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Thanks, but I FLOUNDERED for sure. The puzzle came easy, but I couldn’t decipher the cartoon, despite thinking Atlantis. Good call on your part! Kudos!

Be happy you’re not a Mets fan like me….we’re 14 out! Last night I watched the Yanks, the Sox and the Mets…Losses all around. Maybe I’m a jinx! LOL..Enjoy your day! βšΎοΈπŸ™‹πŸ»

  2. When the WINNER of the competition to develop a MOTTO for the university was announced, she was not VAGUE in thanking her COHORT for their inspiration and support.
    I too had problems with cohort and had to leave the puzzle and com back to it before the answer finally came. Good Tusfay challenge and forced to use my pen at breakfast.πŸ€”πŸŒžπŸŠ

    • Hey Earl, Good morning. You have no PENchant for that pen, huh? πŸ˜€
      Great sentence, as always. Were you thinking Yellow Submarine, or did something else FLOAT through your mind?? πŸŒžπŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Angela– Just returned from a day on the lake and I enjoyed every minute of the brilliant sunshine and refreshing breezes. Yes I thought of the Beatles “Yellow Submarine” this AM and after pondering could only come up with “Das Boat” for another sub reference–no other songπŸŒŠπŸ–πŸŒ…

      • Hey Earl, I’m out on the water as we speak! The sun is glorious, right? Yes, there is “Das Boot”..but maybe a little too dark for morning blogs?! LOL…You know, Thursday night I may be leaving for Saratoga. God forbid they miss opening day! We go every August for a week, and I thought this year we’d skip the opening, but no. It’s just so crowded opening day…all the tourists…Which I guess I’d be! LOL..Leave Thursday night, come back Saturday night. But I’m on the fence. I do love it up there..It’s so beautiful. IDK…I’m glad you had a great day…β›΄ πŸŒžπŸ™‹πŸ»

  3. Atlantis – Great find, Mike! I thought the first word might be aguve but I checked the dictionary and realized the word I meant was agave. The answer came easily, but I had to back into cohort.

  4. Good morning. Stumbled on cohort. I had to look for both the word and answer. I might have given up too quickly but I wasn’t looking for a long and dragged out solution. Oh well,there is always tomorrow. Speaking of that. Take care and be well.

  5. Hi, Mike et al!! Greetings!! My favorite detail in the cartoon was the cute little angry octopus. Mike, fabulous catch with Atlantis; I did not see that. I’m a member of your β€œHad Trouble With Cohort Club” but got it after about 7 self-jumbles.
    Daughter on her way over for the day. I cooked pork chops and made gravy with the pork chop broth for lunch. For dinner I have homemade colorful Fajita soup made with red, yellow, orange, & green bell peppers to start and then taco meat for tacos, tostadas, & burritos. With the vegetables & sweet watermelon, we have 2 feasts!

    • Sounds like you had a great afternoon and evening, Lelia! The weather is so muggy and humid that I find myself only going outside in the late afternoon/early evening. The sweat just pours off of you and there’s no ocean breeze at all. πŸ˜•

  6. Hi, Steve! Thank you for sending me Jerry Garcia’s pedal steel guitar. He can really make that guitar talk!! I loved listening to it, so found it on the internet with that same thunder & lightening picture to listen to again.
    Because you told me NOT to listen to Rod Steward/K.C. duet, B.D. Eyes, I tried to find it but found only β€œTonight’s the Night” which sounded horribly off key to me.
    Hope you two are doing well. More thanks will be coming to you for 2 songs I found last week while looking for one you mentioned.

    • Hi Lelia! Well actually, I have one more. (It turns out Jerry was playing *all* the instruments except drums on “Wheel”). Pedal steel looks like you’re sitting at a sewing table with guitar necks instead of a sewing machine. For a really nice example of playing a regular guitar but using a slide for the chords (somtimes literally a “bottleneck”), check out Brian Jones’ work on “No Expectations” by the Rolling Stones. That was supposedly the last time Brian appeared on a Stones record. It has the added bonus that the lyrics mention one of your favorite comics:

      “Your heart is like a diamond
      You throw your pearls at swine”

  7. The only place I can remember hearing ‘cohort’:

    🎡”Julie and little John Tyler lived in the house next door
    We would be the great triangle and to this we swore
    Julie was my sweetheart, little John was my cohort
    And all the wild horses in the world couldn’t keep us apart
    Once we went for a swim in the noonday sun
    And promised to return before the moon struck one”🎡
    — The Band, “The Moon Struck One”

    Spoiler Alert — This song doesn’t have a happy ending, but I hope your day today does.

    • LOL, Steve, me too! (Oh, but you know that already…)! Another mediocre minds moment! I even went so far as to enlarge the on line picture, and …STILL dead in the water…! Here I see Atlantis, and never picked up on the ruins. (And I even told Mike this morning that I just couldn’t get into the puzzle…Little did I know how little I was getting)! 🎢”Ruby Tuesday”🎢 morning… LOL…I love the ocean, but I love it UNDER me, not vice versa! Just one more thing you’ll never see on my Bucket List! πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • “love the ocean UNDER me” ROTFL!! πŸ˜‚
        No sky diving in our future either, I presume! “Why would anyone jump out of a perfectly good airplane?”

        Maybe no “moon hits your eye” from Daen Martin either? I bet there are plenty of people who know him only from that.
