  1. Good morning, Mike. Missed you y’day. Good morning Everyone. πŸ‡ Happy Kentucky Derby Day! πŸ‡
RACED through the words at record SPEED . I thought, “I won’t be doing this FURLONG”! But then, I get REINed in a little BIT when it came to the answer. RODE down the letters, and it took me about 2 MINUTES to get the solve. Saw take, the only word to go with snatcher and caught, and got the rest. But once again,I’m taking it in STRIDE that the puzzle doesn’t coincide with the theme of the day. Maybe PURSE? It just left me YEARLING for more! Am I mistaken, or did we have ‘day appropriate’ puzzles in the past? Can anyone FILLY me in here? So, today’s the Derby…Big hats, big drinks, and oh yes, the horses.🎢🎢 “I got the horse right here, the name is Paul Revere, And here’s a guy that says if all weather’s clear…Can Do, Can Do….” 🎢🎢 Guys and Dolls…they’ll all be out there today! I can’t wait! And so, Mint Julep in hand, I wish us all a Can Do , Run For The Roses kind of day! And Sue,…this one’s for you! πŸΉπŸΉπŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Forgot to mention, that once again…The women’s a blonde and she’s dressed in purple! What’re the ODDS?

    • Thanks for saving the day again, Angela. Sort of like the type of save the Mets experienced last night! I hope you’re having a great day. 🐎

      • HI Mike. No thanks necessary. I think you can tell by now that I’m willing to pinch hit for you anytime! As for my Mets, they really do never cease to amaze! Scrappy second string pulls off such a beautiful save. Sweeeeeeeeet! IDint get me wrong, I love the long ball, but for me, baseballs always been about the base hits. I love having my bases loaded! My Father always taught us,,,”Don’t show off, just get on base”! And that sage advice wasn’t just for baseball! A thought about HALVE. Very strange word, because the usage is 2 HALVES make a whole, but the word is plural. But then we say, to make a whole, you take HALF and HALF. So the word HALVE itself is seldom seen. Just sayin’. I’m off to the races….and running behind! No pun intended. Hope all went well y’day, and that you have a great day! πŸ‡πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Thanks Angela, trying to decide which horse likes sloppy/muddy track as that can changes the odds. Like a lot of locals, I don’t go to the track on Derby day; Kentucky Oaks which ran yesterday is more of a local thing and it is a day to honor breast and ovarian cancer survivors and most dress in pink. It touches the hearts of those of us that are survivors and honors those that lost the battle.Have a great weekend!! πŸ™‚

      • Sue, you are so welcome. Sloppy, muddy was my whole day so far. Soccer, baseball, soccer. And the whole time all I’m thinking is…’it’s so windy, should I go with the smaller brimmed hat later’? LOL..
How did I not know about the symbolism of the Oaks. I read so much, yet I never knew this. It sounds wonderful. I’m going with Classis Empire, Always Dreaming and McCraken. W-P–S. I’m boxing some trifectas too, because I want to throw Hence in the mix, and like my baseball, I’m all for coveting the bases. I’m tooooooo excited! And my first Mint Julep of the day is for you! Hope you have a great race! πŸ‡β€οΈπŸ™‹πŸ»

  2. Is halve a word? Darn could not solve that CW. it took a while to get the answer but I did and I don’t feel HALVE bad. Men’s Club cancelled today, fish in the fairways! Milwaukee next week….kringles galore!

  3. Hey Sue, this one’s for you. (I’m a poet – who knew?)

This may be a bit obscure, but it’s the only appropriate song
that came to mind. What’s even better, is that the singer refers
to the girl he’s singing to as ‘Little Susie’.

🎡 “Well when you’re sitting back in your rose pink Cadillac
Making bets on Kentucky Derby Day” 🎡

    • Hey Steve, I guess you are a “poet and don’t know it.” I found it funny that you referred to ‘Little Suzie’ as that is my nickname and you would hear ‘Wake Up Little Suzie’ playing if you called me on my cell . This past week ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ has been cold and rainy and not good for Derby activities, however, we manage to enjoy. BTW, I can’t think of the song with lyrics you wrote; I will be at a Derby party trying to figure out which horses like muddy tracks. Also, when ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ is sung, I will sing along and shed a few tears . Cheers and have a great weekend!! πŸ™‚

      • I thought of Everly Brothers instantly too – so funny it’s on your phone!
Spoiler Alert – the song is —
“Dead Flowers” by the Rolling Stones. None of the other lyrics are appropriate. (No! Don’t look!) πŸ™‚

      • I used to think it was a little excessive that they had a 4- hour TV show for a 10-minute race. Now the coverage starts the previous Wednesday! I know how compulsive the horse racing people can be though;
my grandfather was a supervisor of Parimutuel clerks at racetracks (including Yonkers Raceway, Angela)
before computers when they had to calculate the odds and payouts in their heads! I still find that astonishing.

  4. This was not a fast solve for me. I saw dark and heat, as in police, but got nowhere. Finally decided to work with the H, spotted hard and the rest followed.

  5. PNETS = SPENT

    SENYO = NOSEY

    NPARIS = SPRAIN

    URBBSU = SUBURB

    PUZZLE ANSWER:

    SENNSYSPINOBU =
    “PUNNY” BUSINESS

Have a great day and see you all tomorrow!

  6. Took awhile to get HALVE, then even longer for the puzzle. Had to separate the vowels and consonants, then saw the answer.
Wow, the GIANT Jumble event looks like BIG fun, and in my old Chicago neighborhood too!
I hope somebody can go and give us a report.

    • Yo Lefty…the Halves and the Halves not! I’m going forth, literally, on the way to Brooklyn. My heart favorite in the race, Always Dreaming has Brooklyn roots. And that name….like me! The owner has a restaurant in Brooklyn, where were ‘gonna run for those roses. And a seat,! HA… (Im not correcting any typos, I’m in the car, and it’s nit easy to text) As for the sinning no more, part, I’m ‘gonna use tge old..”Let he who is without…blah, blah..stone”. LOL. The weathers crappy here, I’m glad we’re doing an indoor thing this year. I spent 4 1/2,hours today in the chill and the mud, and I’m rewarding myself with Mint Juleps amok! I’m nervous about going against tradition and hedging my bets, because of the Brooklyn connection, and I’m hoping I won’t be crying in my bourbon! When I cry at My Okd Kentucky Home, I’m intending that to be my only cry for the day! I guess I owe you one for tge team snafu, I have to re-read it, couldn’t concentrate. (I’m just seeing all these…tges…what’s up with that)? Ok..Im approaching the gate….(Brooklyn has a lot of gates)! LOL…Rosary beads in the bag, pashmina wrapped, hat (hooefully) secure on head, I’m off.!!! Wish me luck. See ya at the finish line! (Oh, by the way, those lyrics? Talk about sinning no more…. You got some stones to pick up ! HA…… πŸ‡πŸ‡πŸ‡πŸ™‹πŸ»

  7. Hi Mike et al! Needed help with HALVE, but got the other 3 easily and knew the answer to the cartoon immediately. On the site I use when our newspaper is still in the yard, they have a button called β€œhint.” Today, after solving 3 clue words, I went back to the second word & clicked β€œhint” to see what would happen. It gave me the first letter β€œh.” I still had no idea, so clicked it again. This is fun! I clicked it for the third letter before seeing that it was HALVE.
I like seeing the Kentucky Derby women’s hats. Oh, & the horses.
    Enjoy your Saturday!

    • Good afternoon, Lelia! I thought HALVE looked unusual when I solved it but it was the only word that I could come up with so I stuck with it. In regards to your book, I went on eBay to search for it and there are many people selling copies. The cheapest was $12.97 and the most expensive was $33.54! Enjoy the race and talk soon. 😊

      • Hi Mike and everyone. I just ordered a copy from Amazon. I’m not a religious person at all, but I know it will be an inspiring read. Lelia, I don’t know how you feel about someone profiting off your work, but I would guess that you’re happy people are reading your book. I saw some copies being sold from the UK!

    • Lelia – Thank you for posting that! :-). I must tell you why that is so funny to me.
I have a 1980’s version of a Jumble App – a little plastic self-contained handheld game (which I would love to post a picture of, but don’t know how) which produces a Jumble clue and then the four scrambled words, whose letters you move around with 2 buttons. But – it also has a “hint” button that works exactly as you describe!
“The more things change”, eh? πŸ™‚

      • Caroline, Thank you for purchasing my book. Even with a title like My Testimony, it is not religious or preachy, just 14 short stories about me, like the stuff I post here, and a quick read with only 80+ pages, but ever since I read Mike’s comments to me this morning I have been on the phone & sending e-mails to LifeRich to find out what is going on because I didn’t know it was on sale anywhere until I Googled my name not too long ago. I had it self-published, which they used to call Vanity Press, and bought a bunch of copies to give to family & friends. I haven’t sold any of my copies. My husband has an expensive hobby of feeding every wild bird, rabbit, etc. that comes into our yard, and my hobby is giving away copies of my book. If yours does nor arrive, let me know and we will try to figure out how I could send you one. Thanks again, and I hope you like it.
P.S., The price on the back of the book is $8.99 but when I ordered one from Barnes and Nobel just to see how much the postage & handling would be, how long it would take for it to arrive, and whether or not it arrived in great condition, the total was somewhere in the neighborhood of $15. I sincerely hope you didn’t pay more than that. After reading Mike’s comments, I Googled my name again, and they had my book listed for $8.99 and the E-book for only $3.99.

      • Hi Lelia,
Don’t worry, I found a copy with a low mailing cost -$13.11 total. Thanks so much for your offer. If you don’t get a copyright, maybe this is what happens. I think you and your husband have wonderful hobbies.

  8. Good afternoon. Kept checking and couldn’t find your post. Finally I realized my youngest married couple had book marked it for me. Today’s puzzle was a slam dunk. Only took an extra minute for halve. Even my friend had no problem solving both parts. Till tomorrow stay well.

  9. Is this a “Jumble-within-a-Jumble” I see before me? Positivity Hamlet-esque from Mike and uor beloved Jumble boys.

  10. Mike and Jeff – The most interesting part of the “Giant Jumble Event” to me would be the “History of Jumble”. When Jeff and Dave took over, it was immediately obvious to me that something had changed, because the drawings went from a 1930’s-40’s “New Yorker” style to something more modern and cartoon-y (There’s nothing wrong with that, Jeff!). But then ever since, I’ve looked all over and never seen a story about the change or the reasons for it. (Did the old guys die? or retire? Syndicate got sold?). Still wondering.

  11. Steve…real quick..(pun intended? You said 10 minutes? 10 minutes? It’s only 2. Two minutes! What’s with you guys? Ask a woman! We know the difference! LOL. LOL….DROP THE MIC!!! πŸ˜€πŸ™‹πŸ»

  12. Angela – Remember when the Rangers played β€œMiserlou” by Dick Dale and the Del-Tones with about 2 minutes to play in the second period? I later found out that that night, May 4, was his 80th birthday. Hiw cool is that?

      • Yes 😦 Real life called, so I only turned on the game with about 1:16 left in the third — and the Senators had just scored to tie it 4-4. Then they won it in a not very long overtime. Home team has won every game.
I’m going to watch Penguins/Capitals later on tape delay. Better luck with your wagers. And they’re off! Right Now! (Good timing today).

  13. Annnnd, it’s Always Dreaming!!! In about, yes, 2 minutes! Hope you won a bundle!

    • Maybe not a bundle, but a Sweeeeeet parcel!!! I don’t know if I can’t hear because of the crowd or my heart beating like a bass drum! ‘Gonna need a ride home because they’re all drinking again like it’s V-J Day and none of them are in any shape to get me back over the bridge! Penguins drawing first blood…so far I’m having a good day! Later. πŸ‡πŸ™‹πŸ»

        • Hey Harry. I don’t drive! Doing Uber. I’m too tired to beg…πŸ˜ŠπŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Hey Angela

        🎡🎡
“Well I hear you went to (New York City, not Saratoga)
        And your horse, naturally, won”

“Good luck had just stung me
To the race track I did go
She bet on one horse to win
And I bet on another to show
        Odds were in my favor
I had him five to one
When that nag came around the track
        Sure enough we had won.
        🎡🎡

        Cheers! πŸ™‚

        • 🎢🎢 Walked into the party like I was walking onto a yacht…my hat strategically dipped below one eye and my PASHMINA was apricot….🎢🎢. You got me on the second one?? No clue. I must be more tired than I think. Ah, hold your horses, my chariot awaits. HA. (Tired, yes, but still got it)! Ok, see you on the other side..,,of the bridge…πŸ™‹πŸ»

          • Hey Angela –
So your Pashmina was apricot – just like those bad 70’s kitchen appliances in apricot and avocado?

            🎡 “Well, talk about a low-down bad refrigerator” 🎡

Want to identify that? I have a clue if necessary. I know that violates my Prime Directive, but in this case it won’t inconvenience anyone because nobody’s reading yesterday’s posts and

            🎡”Who wants yesterdays papers
            Who wants yesterdays girl
            Who wants yesterdays papers
            Nobody in the world” 🎡

          • Ha! *Apricot* Pashmina stew. Yum!
Second one – The Band, “Up On Cripple Creek”.

            • Lefty, You really ‘gotta stop with the stew. Especially after all the imbibing I’ve done these past few days. (Just look at my Mets…beautifully executed play)! Oh, yes. The stew. No mas, please. I could be sick really. I’ve decided. After the Ranger game and Cinco de Mayo and Seis de Mayo….these bats are hot! Oh yes. Decided. Coconut water only for at least a week. Or at long as it takes to clear my eyes and get my skin tone back! Overload.,,,I have nothing on that song. I have to look it up. πŸ™‹πŸ»

              • Not offered as a value judgment or criticism;
from your post it sounds like you’ve reached this conclusion:

                🎡🎡
                Went to my doctor yesterday
She said I seem to be OK, OK
                She said
                Paul you better look around
How long you think that you can
                Run that body down?
How many nights you think you can
                Do what you been doin’
                Who you foolin’?
                🎡🎡

              • 🎢🎢 I came back home and I went to bed…I was resting my head,,,,🎢🎢. I don’t even do that! Good call. Money call of the night. This song always made me sad, I took it on and off my play list for years. But, it has been a long week. I’m blaming the calendar for putting all these days so close to one another! HA. A little levity to break up the tension….Yea, I’ve decided.. No mas. βœ‹πŸ»πŸ™‹πŸ»

              • Hey Mike. Some of it might be unearned but bring it on! They can be so good when they’re good! Gotta love those base hits! πŸ”₯

              • Oh yea, taking the win! And yes, it was really, good day. That beautiful beautiful horse! And when the 2 Italian owners from Brooklyn in the Winners Circle called him a HAWSE..! What can I say! Enjoy your night too. βšΎοΈπŸ‡πŸ™‹πŸ»

              • He did 14-15 I think 14. Horse had heart, right? Yes, Patch. He just got caught up in that pack. But for one eye? He still had 5-6 horses behind him. πŸ™‹πŸ»

              • No, I so didn’t mean that. Just joking with you cause it seems late. πŸ™‹πŸ»

              • I’m watching Live PD and the baseball games. My usual Saturday night routine! I don’t rush to do the Jumble on the weekends as I try to squeeze in as much family time as I can.

              • You just need a little break!
Just don”t follow Warren Zevon’s advice – “I’ll Sleep When I”m Dead”, – because he is!
Stick around for all the great Jumbles yet to come.

              • Ha. Yep, 🎢 living for the city🎢 I got nothing against sleeping..,just got the clock a little off. Ok maybe a lot off. But I am tired. Make you laugh. When I walked in before I’m thinking “I smell sawdust..was is that? Sign of a stroke”? Where’ am I getting these things from? Jeez. I’m under construction; sawdust smell. Not a stroke. You can’t make this s–t up! LOL. πŸ™‹πŸ»

              • Yep, just imagining stuff. It happens, usually nothing. It’s late enough, I’m outta here.
Talk to you, Mike et al tomorrow.

              • Hi Mike – I didn’t say it was late yesterday, just late enough! πŸ™‚
Angela needed some rest, I was tired of posting (said enough for one day!),
and did I mention I’m old? :-). And what you said about family time – social
media can get a bit addictive at times, especially here where everyone is no nice and funny, but I feel like I have to pull back a bit at times and go do something else.

Nice hearing from you at that hour, though, and today’s a new day!

              • Don’t sweat it. Nobody’s forcing me to post here and I really enjoy the lyric swap and everything else.
🎡 You don’t need to be forgiven. 🎡

              • I think they say it’s burnt toast you smell, not sawdust! Just caught me off guard for a second. So I guess you saw the end of the game right? Tough loss.

  14. So, you turn on the TV and the Mets are ahead, and the Penquins are ahead. The Brooklyn Boyz won the Derby and my Uber driver spoke English! Could this day get any better? πŸ˜ŠπŸ™‹πŸ»

    • A Quadrafecta? Sweeeeeeeet!
Don’t tell me any hockey results – I’m just starting to watch the game on tape delay.

      • Oh s—! Sorry. I forgot you’re on the wrong coast. Later πŸ™‹πŸ»

        • Nothing to apologize for, no problem. Glad you had such a good day.
