  1. Happy Wednesday everyone! Karaoke is an interesting word. It’s actually a blend of two different Japanese words that make one definitive word. It’s derived from a shortened form of the word Karappo which means ’empty’ and a shortened form of the word Okesutura meaning ‘orchestra’. Legend has it that a Japanese entertainer invented the word after his orchestra went on strike and a machine was used to play the music instead.

All of our scrambles returned as being new for the second day in a row! The clue words they turned into were all blasts from the past. They all came quickly except for NELCGA. A bit of careful cogitation with the G made it a snap. Since it was the only one to cause delay, I’ll go ahead and make it my pick for today’s hardest anagram.

Fun cartoon of some folks at a karaoke lounge. The lyrics on the monitor indicate her song choice was ‘I’m Every Woman’ by Chaka Khan — or it could be the Whitney Houston remake. Interesting thing about that song is that Whitney sang backing vocals on Chaka Khan’s original version together with her mother Cissy Houston when she was just 14-years old. The big clue to the solve for me was the cartoon sentence mentioning that the women were lining up to perform. My original guess was “SING-LE” FILE, but it didn’t sound “punny” enough to work. With the letters written out and my guess of SING and FILE removed, GAL was easily sourced from the remainder to seal the deal. The last time we encountered this solution was back on 5/15/14 and the sentence was quite similar: The ladies lined up to sing karaoke – – –. The song choice on that day was ‘Single Ladies’ by Beyoncé. On to tomorrow! Until then, be well and enjoy the day.

  3. Wow… blind-solved a very cryptic puzzle today. Strange thing was FILE somehow popped into my mind first and glad that happened, as I had to back in GLANCE. Thinking about Neil Hefti’s Girl Talk now

  4. Good Morning, Everyone. I hope this finds you well…🙋🏻‍♀️
🎤 DROP THE MIC…NO, SERIOUSLY, DROP THE MIC” 🎤

🎶 All the SINGLE LADIES, all the single ladies…All the single ladies, all the single ladies….All the single ladies, all the SINGLE LADIES…🎶 “Single Ladies (Out a Ring On It)” – Beyoncé 2008 https://tinyurl.com/cuvju9je

🎤 Karaoke’s so much fun, no matter how you sound,
You get up there and take a GLANCE at all the people ‘round…
You’re not the least bit SHAKY, you ascend that FINAL step,
And belt out your old favorite…the results of all your prep…
The music starts to get to you, you WIGGLE…you’re all in,
Your inhibitions quelled for sure…read lyrics and just grin…
Like our girl here who’s proving….”I’m Every Woman” with her smile…
While other anxious ladies stand behind her…”SING-GAL” FILE! 🎤

    • Oooppss…I just noticed that I keyed OUT instead of PUT 🤦🏻‍♀️on the title of my song choice. Or maybe it was that /*$#! Auto correct instead. Either way, for some reason, I can’t get in to edit/correct it…But it does remind me of something… I was doing some kind of matching picture puzzle thing with my 3-yr old niece one day not long ago. She went to try a piece for the second time that wasn’t right, and I said to her…”Let’s wait, and look again. See what’s there on the other picture? I think you have to put a ring on it”…And looking down at the pieces, nodding her head…and without missing a beat, she said…”Yep, that’s what Beyoncé says…” And trust me, it took me at least 10 minutes to recover…😂 🙋🏻‍♀️

      • That is so smart! And definitely a cute line that you’ll have to remind her about in the years to come! ! Are you sure she’s just 3 yrs old! Haha! So adorable! Thanks for sharing!

        • Hey Kim…This one’s constantly singing. They walk around the house and are always singing and dancing to something. Funny thing is, they have no idea what half the lyrics they’re mimicking mean. So it can get pretty entertaining…albeit slightly a little surprising at times! 😂 Kids today are a trip. Very smart, and very, very perceptive. And 3 going on 30. So we go from the puzzles to Beyoncé in one fell swoop…And I’m constantly stifling my laughs.🙋🏻‍♀️

          • I know Angela! I have a niece and two nephews that have amazed me with their vocabulary ability and antics over the years. They are older now, and do not remember the funny things they said and did as small children! Auntie Kim remembers though! 😉! I’ve always told them “you wait until I tell your husband/wives about this one”! 😂 Your tiny niece and the correlation to Beyoncé took me right back there! Just thought it was amazing!

  5. 📓 Lined up SINGLE FILE with no WIGGLE room to speak of, the nervous, somewhat SHAKY students didn’t GLANCE around as they waited to enter the classroom for their FINAL exam…📓

🕺🏻 The contest’s FINAL now on tap, and he took one last GLANCE,
At all his competition for this now deciding dance…
He felt a little SHAKY, and he gave his legs a WIGGLE,
Which prompted the girl next to him to let out a loud giggle
He looked at her and couldn’t help but break out in a smile…
As the director barked to all…”Ok, now…SINGLE FILE”…🕺🏻

  6. Good morning. Today was more like a Monday solve. Quick and easy from the words to the cartoon answer. Until tomorrow stay well and stay safe.

  7. Never sang karaoke and that’s much to the public’s good. An older fellow at the local watering hole calls it “Croaky” but he does a mean yodel. Got 3 of the 4 anagrams at a Glance but the last one was a little Shaky and I needed some Wiggle room before the solve was Final. Heat index of 110 out here in the Great American Desert. Stay safe!

  8. The singers all lined up with glee
Hoping it just might be she
    In full voice or croaky
    To sing karaoke
And a singing sensation to be!

*Thank you OO for coming up with “croaky.” It was not on my original list of rhymes.
Actually I do not like karaoke! Angela, I’m sure you’re at the ready.

    • Hi Helen…
🎤 So the girls they’re all ready to croon,
And their A game they’ve brought to the room,
      They’re lined up and ready,
      Hope their voices stay steady..
And none of them choke up and swoon…🎤

  9. Hi Everyone – Glance required lots of jumbling on paper. I initially thought sing wouldn’t be part of the answer because it appeared in the puzzle. Instead, I tried to do something with the Ing ending. When that failed, I went back to sing and got it.

  10. Anagrams were a snap, but I had Sing-gle for the quoted cartoon solution ,but realized I needed the E for file,so switched it around to Sing-Gal to omelette the Wednesday Jmble. We’re under a heat advisory here in Central Illinois,w real feel temps above 100 forecast for this afternoon,so staying hydrated is a must.

  11. At first tried Flain, for the heck of it, where Final should have been. Thinking that might be a word. Back tracked on that one, when figuring out Glance. Puzzle made me think of SATC 2 that’s been playing on TV a lot these days, with the girls singing karaoke in Abu Dhabi! 😁

  12. Anagrams were easy solve this morning and figured sing would be in the cartoon answer so gal and file followed quickly. I’m not a fan of Karaoke but thanks for all the information about it Mike. Have a good day all!

    • You’re welcome Betty. Karaoke doesn’t do much for me either. Those dueling piano bars where everyone sings is more my speed!

  13. Did this in my paper this morning since the online version wasn’t published last night. It was fun, easy and punny! I’ve done karaoke, mostly on cruises, and mostly to the detriment of the listeners. GLANCE slowed me briefly and the solution took a few extra seconds but overall it was pretty easy for me.

    • I’d be curious to hear your song of choice, Mig! Google says some of the top picks are Billie Jean, Purple Rain and Bohemian Rhapsody.

      • IM a Righteous Brothers groupie, Mike. I actually saw them many times on the Tomorrowland stage at Disneyland. Unchained Melody is good for karaoke.

        • GREAT choice! Having seen them so many times, you must know the lyrics by heart.

My brother once sang “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor to a packed crowd at a local restaurant/bar. It was TERRIBLE! The folks holding the event made a cassette tape of his performance, but he was smart enough to destroy it before we left.

            • I did one karaoke, one time! It was “Under the Boardwalk”. I had sung to it with the oldies radio so many times! That night….it was not in the key of anything I ever had sang to, in my lifetime! I got a couple of claps from a very sympathetic audience! Because it was so sad! 😒 Somebody needed to come out with a big hook to get me off that stage and put everyone(and me) out of their misery! 🤣🤣 If I would ever do this again…. I’m going for Gloria Estefan … or more modern times, Dua Lipa! Get the Hook ready people!!! 🤣

  14. FINAL took some effort, but GLANCE was the hardest jumble. The answer took a while. I saw SING, but finding the rest took time. Loved the answer, though.

I also don’t care for karaoke, but I liked the history lesson from Mike.

  15. Hi all – Got the words and then accidentally saw the answer in the post, so that made it easy!

    Good wishes to everyone.

“He took a FINAL GLANCE at a SHAKY WIGGLE as he left the bar.”
