  1. The second clue gave me fits; I kept wanting the thing you do to bread dough, but the middle letter wasn’t there! However, with the rest of the letters, the solution was clear. It’s cute, though somehow the alternate meaning would sound more natural with a “the” included. I think it would be BETTER that way.

    • Hi Sandy. I think we’re going to have a few people echoing your sentiment with Kneed. But as to the solve, the beauty of it is the use of BETTOR. They know he’s bluffing, he’s…NO BETTOR. Hence, they KNEW what he might do…they KNEW BETTOR… The play on words is a clever one. But I BET there will be the question…BETTER or not? Talk to you later…♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  2. Hi, Angela.
What I meant, not to belabor it, was that to “know better” is definitely in the language. But for the phrase actually in the jumble, wouldn’t one more normally say, “know THE bettor”? It sounds incomplete to my ear without THE.
It’s still a clever idea, so I will quit picking the nit.

    • Yes, I do know what you mean, truly…but I think David’s intent was to say that the others were “on to him”, on to the situation …They were ahead of the game. With Lissa saying “sounds familiar”, and Jeff saying, “You said the same thing last time”. They “knew better” than to believe him… https://tinyurl.com/yygqj73w. And you’re hardly picking the nit…I think it’s kind of a 6 of 1 …1/2 dozen of the other situation…🤷🏻‍♀️

    • I think the crucial point here is that the answers are always puns. In this case, the pun results from the fact that you’re expecting KNEW BETTER but the answer is KNEW BETTOR. Including the ‘THE’ would mess that up, since there’s no expression “Knew the better.”

I hope you keep posting, Sandy – I enjoy reading your thoughts.

    • Hey Sandy…We had two previous Poker puzzles whose answer was BETTER BETTOR. One goes way back to September 12th, 2009, and I’m still looking for that one. But the other was more recent, from June 29th, ‘19. https://tinyurl.com/ydd96wup. I keep thinking maybe we would have been BETTER off with that answer again today! 😉 I hope your day’s going well. I’m tired! Be well, Sandy, and stay safe out there…♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. Good Morning, Everyone. I hope this finds you well …♣️

🎶 Oh! I’ll rise from the floor if I don’t win…I’ll bust open that door so let me in…And the music chooses me to sing I let her…I’ll sing what I know, yes I KNOW BETTER…oh I KNOW BETTER, yes…I KNOW BETTER… “I Know Better” – John Legend 2016 https://tinyurl.com/y5tguuz8

    ♣️ So…Once again a poker game…you’d think they’d had enough
But Jeff and Dave? It’s in the cards…Today we get a bluff
And seated at the table telling Dennis he’s a fraud,
Is none other than Jumble’s Jeff…our Poker Overlord…
You might blink TWICE at this cartoon, we’ve seen the group before,
In fact the NUMBER goes quite high…there’s been so many more
We’ve seen a gambler’s THEORY, we’ve seen some playing greed,
We’ve seen high rollers and the such…and those who’ve gotten KNEED..
So once again, a poker game…hope Dennis won’t regret ‘er…
‘Cause this group isn’t playing ‘round…to a man, they KNEW “BETTOR”♣️

For a minute there, I thought I might KNEED help…because even after looking TWICE…I still couldn’t find KNEED in the Archives. TBT, it seems odd, since it’s not that odd a word, but I’m giving it to you STRAIGHT…I came up empty…So I asked my friend to help…but he can’t really DEAL with minutia, ANTE said no…So I FOLDED. But old or not, it’s the only word that caused a PAIR of the Early Birds to HOLD EM up the game…maybe more so because 1 of them doubted it was a word…(Don’t ask…KNEED I go on? Uh, I think not)..Anyway…The rest was pretty STRAIGHTforward…you know, old words and new anagrams. And with that being said, let’s take a STAB at todays great cartoon…and GET IN ON the ACTION….And let the CHIPS fall where they may…

So, a Poker game…Where do I start? If you were to put the word POKER into a Jumble search…trust me, you’d find a FULL HOUSE. We’ve been HIT with soooo many Poker Puzzles in PLAY over the years that you could HAND them out like Kleenex. Seriously…and it would take a while before you’d WIPE them OUT…And since I was curious this morning, I went ALL IN, and took a look. But after going back only (only?) 10 years, I was able to GET OUT aROUND 40 some odd puzzles. And I’m not BLUFFING! I sat here thinking…The sky’s the LIMIT…We’ve had KINGS, and JOKERS, and of course a QUEEN. We’ve had Farm HANDS, Witches, winners and losers. We’ve had the ones who always STAY to FINAL TABLE, and the ones who get taken to the cleaners before they’ve had time to settle IN and IRON out their jitters…We’ve been in Casinos, basements, Poker rooms of Indiana, back rooms of bars, and as I said…even down on the farm. Yep…we’ve seen it CALL. And let’s FACE it, Folks…I don’t think we’re even close to DRAWING to an end..But I’m sure we can all BUY-IN…

Anyway…today we’re SITTING IN on what we’ve come to know as Jeff’s weekly Poker Game, with his usual band of susSPECS. Clockwise from lower left, we have Big Mike, Dennis the man of the SCOUR, Lissa,(looking so much COOLER than the rest in her trademark Breast Cancer T-Shirt), Jeff, (in what looks like a Peanut’s Halloween graphic Tee…a Ghost and a Pumpkin) and Donnie. And while Mike and Donnie are STAYING PAT, Lissa and Jeff are heard CALLING Dennis’s bluff. Sort of like a case of the POT CALLING the kettle back…since Jeff is saying that Dennis tried this exact same tactic back when they played the last game. And anyway…look at Dennis’s hands…You know how it is, you can always TELL when a poker player’s lying…you know… his CHIPS are moving…But the thing I’m having a hard time DEALING with? The last time Jeff let us SIT IN on his game, in June, it wasn’t Dennis that was feeling FLUSH, it was Mike. Here, take a look. https://tinyurl.com/y5s7kupl. I mean it’s not that I’m looking to PROBE or anything, nor do I think we should be invited every week, it’s just that it kind of BROKE MY CONCENTRATION a little, that’s all…And beSIDES, you all know how I always try to be STRAIGHT with you, and REPRESENT the truth here…Anyway, I SEE that I’ve been WHALEing on for far too long…So, what do we deDUECE from all this? Dennis was in no POSITION to bluff, he’s NO BETTOR… and he should Know Better than to try…because the others all…KNEW “BETTOR”. https://tinyurl.com/yygqj73w..You HIT the JACKPOT, David!

Eye candy? The bluff’s obvious, since Dennis has a 2 and a 9 of Clubs in his hand. But he does have a healthy STACK in front of him…And from what we can see, everyone seems to be playing well enough. The only other visible cards though are Big Mikes’. We can see the Ace of Diamonds, and a 2. But the winner in this cartoon is the way Lissa’s rolling and CUTTING her eyes towards Jeff, in KNOWING amusement. Jeff brought his A-GAME with this one… https://tinyurl.com/y4fse6v6

So, there you have it, Folks. Done. Sorry about the inordinate length of this…it’s just that Poker Games always RAISE my interest, and I had so much to TELL. And Jeff’s DRAWn such a good one today…So, I guess we all paid the PRICE…And that’s my POST. Ok…gotta RUN. I’ve somewhere to be today, and I don’t want to leave the others SHORT HANDED…Have a good one, be well and stay safe out there…And I hope your day’s a WINNING one…♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  4. 🦵🏻 They went by the THEORY that if you KNEED someone once, and lived to tell it, doing it TWICE would definitely mean your NUMBER was up…but they all KNEW BETTER than to try it…🦵🏻

🤦🏻‍♂️ He drove around the block again, TWICE looking for the house,
The darkness kept the NUMBER hid…and he began to grouse
He twinged in pain where he’d been KNEED, he tried his leg to shift,
In THEORY he should be at home…with his leg in a lift…
Himself to blame…he never should have made himself a debtor
And now there is a price to pay…despite that he KNEW BETTER 🤦🏻‍♂️

  5. Hi Everyone – I felt pretty sure that “were” would be the first word of the answer but when the remaining letters didn’t work, I noticed Knew and then Bettor. I did check to see if Kneed was a word in the dictionary and can’t recall it being used during my 4+ years.

    • Hi Caroline. Yes, I checked again, and I couldn’t find it. I’m surprised though because it isn’t all that uncommon a word. Have a good one, Caroline. Be well and stay safe.♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  6. Good morning. Had pause on Kneed and after awhile starring at the letters I finally came up with the answer for the cartoon which was cleaver. Until tomorrow stay well and stay safe.

    • Hey Paul. Kneed brought up a lot of discussion amongst the Early Birds this morning…I’m still shaking my head! Have a good one, Brooklyn. It feels like summer’s back…Be well and stay safe out there. ♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  7. Kneed came quickly to mind but I wasn’t sure it was a real word, but after settling that it was, knew bettor came quickly to mind. After a 2 week break,we’re back in Dixon on twin watch, after Kate said she wanted Gramma to visit ,and I guess I could go along for the ride.

    • Hey Professor…I’m going to Kneed a drink over this word! 😉 Enjoy the kids and be safe out there. ♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  8. I too paused at kneed not knowing for sure if it was a real word. Other than that it was an easy solve. Hope all of you have a good day.

    • Good Morning, Betty. Yes, it was an easy one…And fun. Betty…did you get that email with all the new Dr Fauci Bobble Heads? I’m leaning towards the tree ornament.😉 Be well, Betty and stay safe out there. ♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  9. Hi all – Easy one today with the quotes showing it was BETTOR instead of BETTER.

    Good wishes to everyone.

“The course on NUMBER THEORY sprained his brain so badly, he decided that next time he’d get the same results more quickly by just asking to be KNEED TWICE in the head.”

Angela, when you said “Don’t ask…KNEED I go on?”, did you mean don’t ask which person doubted that KNEED was a word? If I’m reading between the lines correctly, you’re right, I won’t ask because I think I might know.

Also, I think you’re mistaken on the T-shirt. Given the length of the stem, that’s a cherry about to be gobbled up by Pac-Man.

      • Thanks for the info, Mike! But I think Wilco must have taken the graphic from Pac-Man. My mistake was that the picture is one of the ghosts: “Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde are the primary group of fictional ghosts who serve as the main antagonists in the Pac-Man franchise.”
See, I’m so old I know the arcade game but not Wilco, and I’ve also forgotten the details. On the subject though, check out this current TV ad from the California Lottery – It’s titled “Get your quarters ready” and it’s for their new Pac-Man scratcher game. A group of (now old) people in full 80’s regalia with Simple Minds’ song ‘Don’t You Forget About Me” for the soundtrack.

    • Hey Steve…Trust me…you don’t Kneed to know! 😉 It was one of those conversations that quickly went south…and definitely caused a SMH! But you know I was really just trying to work the pun in there…And I don’t know anything about Pac Man except that I thought it/he was a little round thing. But you’re right…it definitely looks more like a cherry 🍒 than a pumpkin. I went with pumpkin ‘cause I took the white thing for the little ghost from the Charlie Brown Halloween Specials….Have a good one, Steve. Be well and stay safe. ♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  10. Not my crowning moment. I stalled at KNEED but settled on it, then took a while to form a THEORY on solving the Jumble. I too thought WERE was the first word, so much so I wrote it in INK. On to Sunday’s 6 letter clues…..

    • Yikes! Ink? 😉 LOL! I do all my puzzles in ink too. I’m just not a pencil person…But Kneed? Please…No mas! Have a good day, Mig. Be well and stay safe. ♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  11. 2nd clue word had me for a second, but then I remembered what the so-called athletes were doing during the National Anthem and then I knew the answer.

    • Hey Ronald…I think you’ve just won the internet today! 👏🏻👏🏻! Kudos..Great pickup…Have a good one…Be well and stay safe out there. ♣️🙋🏻‍♀️

  12. Here’s the first use of ORATOR for our late night crowd! 😉

      • My apologies! I was watching the Red Sox in the living room and they scored 8 runs in the 2nd inning. With a blowout unfolding, I switched it off and turned my attention to clipping old Jumble puzzles in my man-cave (finished basement) with just a desk lamp on. I didn’t give the time of day a thought! 😝

    • Just for the heck of it:
