  1. Good Morning, Everyone. 🌭 WEINER, WEINER…ALL BEEF DINNER …Or in this case…THE WEINER TAKES IT ALL! 🌭

🎶 HOT DOG, you say you’re really coming back…HOT DOG, I’m waitin’ at the railway track HOT DOG…you say you’re coming home for good…HOT DOG…I’m gonna keep knocking on wood…🎶 …”Hot Dog” – Elvis 1957 https://tinyurl.com/y5prsaop

🌭 What started out as WHIMSY…a publicity stunt,
Today has become commonplace…the chomping and the grunts…
In the SHADOW of the Ferris Wheel, which like a DRAGON stands
We have this Famous Contest…the biggest in the land
At Coney Island, USA…where DRESSY doesn’t count,
Each July 4th the crowds converge…while tension always mounts
And with an appetite that could put a PIRATE to shame,
This guy named Joey Chestnut has each year won the acclaim…
And all Jonnny-come-LATELY‘s ‘oer the years, well they have tried
But down to a man…end result is he SWALLOWED HIS PRIDE! 🌭

Ok, so I may have taken a little different slant with the puzzle this morning. While our guys have dished out a scenario in which the Champ relinquishes the crown, I’ve instead gone with a rhyme touting the “real” Hot Dog Eating Contest, the one held annually on Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY. The World’s Famous Nathan’s…https://tinyurl.com/q9jbogw… And it’s back story is definitely food for thought…I think you’ll enjoy reading about it…

Anyway, our words…So, in keeping with tradition, (just like my contest), I’m running late. I don’t know what it is, but for some reason I’m always biting off more than I can chew on Sunday mornings…Too much on my plate…So, I’m going to skip the word analysis for now, but I’ll definitely get to it…so I suggest you come back for seconds…

Our cartoon. According to the signage, today we’re at the “Super Dawg Championships”. My first thought? I’d have called it the CHOMPionships..because trust me…that’s what these guys do. They chomp down those Hot Dogs like there’s no tomorrow…And if you’ve ever viewed the contest in person? Take my word for it…it’s a lot to digest! I’ve gotten a little nauseous just watching…So I suggest, if you ever decide to attend? Don’t eat first…Again, just food for thought…Anyway, we’re seeing the reigning Champ losing out to a newcomer, and taking it all in stride…he’s SWALLOWED HIS PRIDE, and conceded that he’s been EATEN…fair and square…Good one, David…I can definitely see the whimsy! But I’ll tell you what held up a few of the Early Birds this morning…They thought for sure that the first word was going to be RELISHED…and it definitely slowed them down. So despite being short a letter, they chewed on it for a while…until they realized that no matter how they played around with our letters, they’d never get it down …literally…going with Relish…(Although I have to admit, I think it would have made for a brilliant solution)…and once they knew that they’d bitten off more than they could chew…they took another bite out of it, swallowed their pride…and came up with the right answer. It was bun..I mean fun while it lasted…

Eye candy? I’m going to go with the DAWG in the sign…A slang word for a man, a friend. You don’t hear it used that much any more…and it always reminds me of Randy Jackson, one of the original judges on “American Idol” …He’d use that word so much, that I’d find myself biting my tongue.. https://tinyurl.com/y48atbjv

.So, There you have it, Folks…Done! Wishing you all a good one…And I‘ll be back with that word breakdown as soon as I KETCHUP…🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

  2. Ok…Here we go…And 🎶Hot Diggity, Dog Diggity🎶, it wasn’t such a bitter pill to swallow…because today, they’re all pretty recent words…David’s dished them out all within the last year…from July 2019 with SHADOW through 01/26/20 with WHIMSY. And we’re being served seconds with GRANDO, from 08/24/16, and SREYDS, from last Christmas Day. And while I don’t have the actual puzzle from 2016, here’s the post… https://tinyurl.com/y2gd5gaz

As for DRESSY, I was able to MUSTARD up both…Ok…CHOW! 🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. 🤷🏻‍♂️ He hated always being in the SHADOW of his brother…it weighed on him like the breath of a DRAGON, and LATELY he felt for sure that it was he who was the one to PIRATE his idea of the WHIMSY-like DRESSY outfits for pets…but he SWALLOWED HIS PRIDE just the same, and went to the Family Reunion…🤷🏻‍♂️

🏴‍☠️ He dressed up as a PIRATE, although his second pick,
    He’d hoped to find a DRAGON costume…but he wasn’t quick…
The shop sold out in no time flat, LATELY he’s noticed that
More people got their costumes at the dropping of a hat…
It’s fun to see the WHIMSY that Halloween can bring
From characters quite SHADOW like…as the one from “The Thing“
Or women who’ll get DRESSY, much like a movie queen,
And then of course there’s so much more that’s sandwiched in between…
So anyway, the party…as a Pirate he would ride…
But so did many others…so he just SWALLOWED HIS PRIDE! 🏴‍☠️

    • I get that kids’ Jumble in my Sunday comics and was actually temporarily stumped by the “cheat-ah’ solution,

      • They’re not always super easy, Prof. But today, it was all right there…Jeff not only “spelt” it out on the dialogue, he “drew” us in with the three different cats…The lion and the tiger are both calling out the CHEETAH for CHEATing! 😉Definitely a cute, very clever one! Be well, Prof…and stay safe out there…🦁🐯🙋🏻‍♀️

  4. Good morning. Not a easy day for me today but I did get both ends of jumble. The last word I got was Dragon. I spent a lot of time on the cartoon and had a first answer that I knew was no good. I put the paper aside three time before I finally came up with the right answer. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good Afternoon, Brooklyn. I was starting to get worried about you…you’re usually CHOMPing at the bit to get here early! 😉 But you shouldn’t worry…from the looks of the poll, you’re not flying solo today…the solve seems to have quite a few people BITING the dust! 😉 Be well, Paul…and stay safe out there…🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

  5. Easy peasy! I always find the Sunday Jumble easier, probably because most words are longer and I can find the solution just scanning the letters. Today’s solution was obvious after reading the dialogue….

    • Hi Mig…and I agree, on both COUNTs…I can always sink my teeth 😉 into the 6-letter words much quicker than the 5’s, and I thought today’s solve was really easy to DIGEST. But as I mentioned earlier, a few of my friends were concentrating on RELISHing so much, they didn’t find the solution that easy to SWALLOW. And the poll numbers seem to be echoing the sentiment. But I’m glad you breezed through it…Keep this up and you just might become eligible for that SALARY! 😂😂 Have a good one, Mig. Be well and stay safe out there…🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

      • I find that very interesting, because I almost always find the 6 letter words harder than the 5 letter ones.

  6. Everything fell into place nicely this morning. The puzzle reminded me of an old Perry Como song, “Hot Diggity Dog”. Personally I find eating contests disgusting and surely don’t consider them a “sport”. Can only imagine what the participants are doing to their GI Tracts. Nevertheless, I wish all of you a pleasant Sunday.

    • Good Morning, Betty. I mentioned 🎶Hot Diggity Dog🎶 when I did the word analysis, but I didn’t post a link. But here it is, especially for you…And would you look at that face? Was he a Cutie Patootie or what? Soooo handsome! And that smile? …I should pause…I seem to need to KETCHUP to my heart rate! 😂 Anyway, I hope you enjoy watching and listening to it…As for the “pig-fests” as I call them…I’m with you…Totally gross…If I didn’t happen to be at Coney Island anyway, and figured..”why not”? I don’t think I’d ever have chosen to see one. Trust me when I say that seeing it live? Not easy to stomach…😱 Pun intended! And how they ever made it a sport is beyond me too. I can’t believe that’s it airs each year on ESPN! Now “that” I really find hard to DIGEST! 😂 So, another easy, breezy puzzle BITES the dust, and I wish you a pleasant Sunday also, Betty…Be well, and stay safe out there…🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

      • 🎵”Dear Perry, would you be so kind
As to fill our request, and sing the song we like best?”🎵

        • Want another little bit of musical trivia? Ray Charles wrote that song. And it’s won me more than one round throughout the years! 😉🥃🥃🙋🏻‍♀️

              • Yeah, but now I *really* need to hear Ray Charles sing “Letters, we get letters..” 😂🎹

              • I don’t know if he ever recorded it himself..you’ll have to do the research. I know his back-up singers, the Raylettes I think they were called (?) might have done vocals somewhere with it…Maybe on Perry’s recording? IDK…🤷🏻‍♀️I just knew that he wrote the words and lyrics to the song. Interesting, right? 🎶🙋🏻‍♀️

  7. Hi all – I know I’ve been stumped by GRANDO before, and at least I recognized it this time, but I still didn’t get the word instantly. I did get it after just a couple of jumbles this time though. I actually saw SWALLOWED earlier in the week when a newspaper printed this cartoon in advance, but I think I would have gotten it anyway (but who knows?)

    Good wishes to everyone.

“The PIRATE had felt a bit of WHIMSY LATELY and decided to wear a DRAGON costume to the DRESSY party, but a burst of fire-breath from a *real* one that he encountered on the way left only his SHADOW on the cavern wall.”

Funny about your poem Angela – at my Safeway this morning, the floral department display was all Halloween balloons and figures. And I used to think September was pushing it!
And you got me absorbed for at least a half-hour with your song link. I didn’t have any memory of it, despite the fact that I saw “Loving You” at the movies when it came out. I’m sure it suffered comparison by being sandwiched between the much more memorable “Love Me Tender” and “Jailhouse Rock.”
Also, thanks for that story about the return of The Far Side yesterday. I did feel the same as the author about the Jumble though. The Jumble cartoons of that era always felt to me like the 40’s, WWII and my parents generation. Specifically, my parents had drink coasters and shot glasses with cartoons on them in a very similar style.

    • Hey Steve…I don’t think you’re alone with not knowing the Elvis song. I think most people thought of it as a typo for 🎶Hound Dog🎶 and never paid much mind to it…Except for me! 😂..Halloween..it’s August..where’ve you been? 😉 It’s in all the stores already…Makes you wonder though…Will there be any “Halloween”going on this year? I hope so…🙏🏻 And YW…I thought you’d enjoy the New Yorker article. But I have to differ..I never tired of the Jumble. I’ve done it every day since I’ve been knee high to a grasshopper, and I’ve always enjoyed it doing it. Maybe because I did it so many years with my Father…❤️…Anyway…those glasses? I’m pretty sure I’ve still got some tucked away in the attic somewhere…and if I come across a picture, I’ll send it to you. There was so much whimsy in the old Retro stuff, right?…I wish I had It all…Have a good one, Steve. Be well, stay safe…and resist the urge to start buying that candy now! 😂 🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

      • I didn’t catch any inference about being tired of the Jumble, just that it seemed to have been around a long time, and I also never tired of doing it (obviously; here I still am! 😂)

  8. Special note to Caroline – Here was my big chance! I actually remembered your trick about words with three vowels and tried ‘E’ at the end to solve TARIPE, but all I got was A-TRIPE! 😂 I know, my tricks don’t work every time either; I just got a laugh when my first-ever attempt failed.

  9. Very funny, Steve. You actually came up with two real words.
What helped me today was seeing the two Ls and guessing they might go together.
I’m with Betty and Angela on these contests. Some people have even died I think.

    • Hey Caroline. It’s totally absurd…money or not. The damage to ones esophagus, and stomach, etc? Not enough money in the world for me…I loveeeee Hot Dogs, but usually BUNS😉 enough! 🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

  10. One word today did me in – tleayl. I thought it unscrambled to talley but the letters didn’t work out. Finally saw that lately gave me the letters I needed. This is the first time I remember the letters would unscramble to different words. Of course I have not been doing this very long.

    • Hi Bob. I think you may be confusing the word TALLY with Talley. That seems to ADD UP, right? 😉 Thanks for commenting, and please do so again. Have a good one, Bob. Be well, and stay safe out there…🌭🙋🏻‍♀️

      • Good evening. Angela you had me with your song choice on the Elvis song. This was the first time I ever heard it by him. My wife and I have him on 78 and 45 rpm records. She even had his picture taped to the inside of her roller skate box. Now the one with Perry Como was great. That definitely was an oldie but a goodie. Take care.

        • Hi Paul. Yea, it’s not very well known, but I hope you enjoyed it. I have all the 45’s and 33 1/3’s that were my Dads, but I’m not too sure about any 78’s …I’d have to check. And how adorable with the picture in the skate box…❤️ Perry? In a class by himself. Hope you had a good day, Paul and enjoy your night…🙋🏻‍♀️
