I’m fast and I get furious…for cards I have a feel…
I’m ambidextrous with things…but here I’m on no FENCE
My left hand dominates throughout…and it just follows whence…
To DABBLE with a hand of Bridge, I’d have to HOUND a friend
To show me how the dealing goes…beginning to the end…
I have seen women playing, COPPER pennies and some dimes
Are what they use while bidding…but I’ve never spent the time…
The game just don’t appeal to me…but I’m sure it’s quite grand…
And this game is now set to start…with comments BEFOREHAND!♣️♦️
So, Bridge. I was telling the truth up above, when I mentioned that I’ve never tried my hand at Bridge. I don’t know the slightest thing about it, and I’ve never dealt with it before at all. I mean I’ve heard a bridge playing joke or two over the years…like…”So my wife made me join a bridge club”…I jump off next Tuesday”. You know, that kind of stuff. And it’s not like I have a short tension span or anything, I just don’t know the score when it comes to the card game...So in case you’re like me, and declare yourself to not have a lead when it comes down to it, here’s a little background, a quick lesson. It’s up to you if you care to read through it…we’re not signing any contracts here…But personally, I did a double take…it doesn’t look all that easy to me…But again, it’s your call, and if you care to do the honors, well suit yourself…
Ok. So, with no new words to deal with this morning, maybe we should just cut to the chase, and jump right to the work at hand…Oh wait…Todays trick word …Well, while all four of our entries are 2019 old favorites, I think it might be COPPER…Because when I mentioned it to the Early Birds, and offered them a penny for their thoughts…they told me to give it “a rest“ …(get it?…Copper…arrest)?…Ahem…
Our game today takes us to what may possibly be an “active retirement” village, and opens up to the glassed-enclosed clubhouse overlooking the tenace…I mean terrace outdoors. I say this because I see palm trees in the background, so I’m thinking we could be somewhere in Florida, home to so many of those beautiful “over 50” communities. Seated at a bridge table, we meet four women about to begin a game of Bridge. Our dialogue is telling us that the woman farthest left, seen deftly shuffling the deck, is guaranteeing her friends that she’ll pass-out good cards. But the response she’s getting from another player isn’t the greatest invitation. The woman seated clockwise to her left, who seems a bit controlling, is overheard somewhat slamming her finesse at shuffling. Now that’s something I’d definitely avoid, but then again…RHO knows. Since neither of the other two women are speaking up to defender, I guess it’s just par for the course. They’ve probably been playing together for years, and maybe she’s just used to trumping the others. There’s always one in every crowd, am I right? Anyway, our shuffler, with a big beautiful smile on her face, doesn’t look the least bit vulnerable, so I guess she’s not going to let it stopper…And most likely, they’ve probably gone through all this with the shuffling many times BEFOREHAND, so I guess there’s no call for alarm…Nicely played, David! I have to hand it to you…You’ve dealt us another winner!
Eye candy. A great drawing, as always…The rays of sun seen streaking across the glass definitely scored points. And if you look very closely, way off in the background, silhouetted against the black building, is a tiny green flag flying atop a pole. But I think I’ll go with that little score card and pencil lying to the left beside the woman who seemed to get a little out of hand earlier…It just seems to add up! So, There you have it, Folks…Done! Have a great day, Everyone! But before I bid you adieu…a question to all of you Bridge aficionados out there…Wouldn’t this puzzle have played better yesterday? No, never! I’ve threatened to make one every now and then..but so far, nothing! 😂 And I’ve just never gotten around to eating one, either. Maybe I’ll try one, one of these days…Poutine? Ummm…LOL! I’m sure there’s no comparison! And the Saganaki? 👏🏻👏🏻 Did you enjoy it? I did enjoy the saganaki very much. It was served with a lemon wedge but was not flambéed at the table, which both disappointed and relieved me. I gave the waitress the puzzle from my newspaper.

Caroline…Years ago when my Mom had a stay in a rehab facility for a while, I bought Boston Market gift cards for all the CNA’s that worked on Her floor. So I’ve been on BM’s mailing list ever since. I just got an email that in celebration of Pi Day today, you can get a free Pot Pie for every one you buy. And the pies have the Pi Sign baked into its top. Too funny! But so cute! 🥧🙋🏻♀️

Yes..it has been a thing for quite a while…You know I’ve still not had a pot pie…I don’t really know why, but I’ve never eaten one! Good morning. Talk about Blind solves. The words were instant reads and then looking at the cartoon that too was an instant solve. We have to come up with a new day because this was easier than our normal Monday ones. Terrific job today Angela. I listened all the way through your song choice and yes I know my choice is in a different card game but I would have preferred to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. Being a math guy,nice to be reminded of national,pi day,3.14. Anagrams and puzzle were a quick solve.With our grandkids having been in school all week,our son and daughter advised us to stay clear of them this weekend,lest they expose us to something they may have been exposed to.So no trips N to see them thus weekend.

Wow, Angela & Caroline, maybe gals who do Jumble don’t do Bridge. I too thought maybe the answer would have a bridge related term which would stump me but I too saw hand and the rest fell in to place. My card playing skills are relegated to Old Maid and Go Fish. Hope all of you stay well in this difficult time. Life as we know it in S.F. Is pretty much shut down. It’s like someone has pressed the pause button. My parish has even suspended Mass this weekend. LOL! You may be right, Betty. Maybe it’s like Mahjong…another game with which I have nary a clue! Who knows! And I’m a big fan of Go Fish and Old Maid too…the Little Ones love playing. Life’s messed up here too…no Masses for us either….But we can watch it on TV at least. It airs a few times on Sundays….And what a perfect analogy you’ve made. Hi all – “CROPPER” led to “COPPER”, then I tried ED at the end of the last word, but the double letter trick showed DABBLE. Had to work for the answer. I was surprised it didn’t end in LY. First saw BOARD but it didn’t fit with anything, then saw HAND which gave it away.
I was impressed by how the dealer is shuffling the cards – looks like she’s done this a time or two before! My wife’s parents were heavily into bridge, but I’m a complete DUMMY; never played. One way for a newspaper feature editor to guarantee an avalanche of complaints is to mess with the chess or bridge columns!

Interesting! Three 5-letter words and one 6-letter word. And is she lighting up an after dinner cigarette (and wearing a coffee cup on her head? 😂) Gotta love these old ones.
Yes…, the word format was different back then, right? But LOL…A coffee cup? 😂 I’ll have you know, that she’s wearing a très chic, very fashionable pill box hat…💃🏻 She does look rather the femme fatale, doesn’t she? 😉 The cartoonist back then was Martin Naydel, and he was known mostly as a comic book guy…you can see that in his work. She looks like the way women were drawn in comic books back then. When Henri Arnold took over, his distinction was that he drew all his characters in profile, remember? Funny how different artists have their own slant. No pun intended! I think I told you that I found some boxes that were my Fathers…and he had a bunch of old Jumbles like this one here? Such a great vintage look….🙋🏻♀️
Thanks for all the info! I must only remember the Arnold Jumbles; this style doesn’t look familiar to me at all. I loved Arnold’s style, but he drew only in profile, all those years? I don’t remember that, but I don’t have any old cartoon books to look at; it almost sounds impossible to do with all the situations he must have had to cover.
Steve…I don’t “remember” Naydel’s drawings per se, I wasn’t around! But I’ve seen pictures, and as I said, my Father saved a ton of Jumbles. But I’m almost positive that Arnold drew the Jumble in profile only. I’d have to look it up I guess. But he only did like straight line type of people, remember? Not rounded out, full…more realistic looking bodies like Jeff does. And I’m pretty sure we never saw full faces…front faces. There has to be pictures out there. I think I even read somewhere that when Jeff first started he was asked to draw like Arnold. But I could be wrong…Here’s a thought…Why not hit Google…and we can meet at the pass? 😂😂 🤷🏻♀️

Back then people always got dressed up when they went out anywhere. My Mother said they dressed to go food shopping. Men went around in suits and ties…even to Ball games, right? Different world….And you’re assuming she’s at a Woolworths,, just because of the puzzles answer, right? 😉 But au contraire, mon frère! …That was a common thing back then too. It just referred to a meal that was a lighter, lower-priced one, albeit maybe not at the top-shelf restaurants. Neighborhood places. Kind of like what’s offered today at some places like TGIF and Applebee’s…You know like those 2 for $20 deals? I just saw one advertised the other night on TV. Same theory…🍝☕️🙋🏻♀️
