ANSWER:

“LORETTA’S VOICE HAS AN ARRESTING QUALITY. IT MAKES YOU WANT TO…”

PO ILL CCE AL
= CALL THE POLICE

Good Morning, Everyone!    👫🏻LORETTA…HIS AWFULLY WEDDED WIFE👫🏻

🎶 The warden threw a party in the county JAIL…The PRISON band was there and they began to WAIL..The band was jumping and the joint began to swing…You should’ve heard those knocked out JAILbirds SING…Let’s rock, everybody, let’s rock…Everybody in the whole cell block…Was dancing to the JAILHOUSE Rock…🎶 “Jailhouse Rock” – Elvis  1957

👫🏻 I find it quite amusing that David chose a word,
That might describe the singing of Loretta…quite absurd…
ATONAL describes music that doesn’t fit the mold,
And anyone who’s heard her knows that here she takes the gold!
Her voice has been called many things…a shriek, maybe a TRILL,
But often times the ACCENT’s akin to if looks could kill…
And Leroy’s known to cringe each time that she decides to sing,
To him that small PIANO helps the misery to bring….
His sarcasm is witty, he makes jokes but prays she’d cease…
Arresting quality indeed! Should he CALL THE POLICE? 👫🏻

As our 7th Annual Guest Jumbler Week draws to a close, today we’re going out with an oldie but a goodie, The LOCKHORNS. Originally created by Bill Hoest, since his death it’s been written by our guest, The Cartoon Lady, Bunny Hoest, and illustrated by her partner, our guest John Reiner. And it celebrated its’ 50th Anniversary last year. That’s a lot of locking horns! And Loretta and Leroy, the comic’s protagonists are Masters at their game. Masters at making sarcastic, passive-aggressive one-liners to one another, it’s usually done face to face, or as an aside to a third party, as in today’s cartoon. They’re a married couple who just about hate one another. Marital bliss? More like Marital Miss…and we’ve laughed about their hijinks all these years. Loretta shops, Leroy drinks. Loretta sings..Leroy drinks…Loretta wrecks the car…Leroy drinks. Oh, and he’s also an incorrigible flirt, who plays a lot of golf….And yes, I can hear all the single ladies out there chanting a collective “Phew”! Dodged a bullet! As I said…Marital Miss! And you can read all about it in the links above…

But before we begin discussing our words today, have you noteiced how each of them seem to be related to music in some way? And then related to the puzzle also? I think this is a first…and if it was done intentionally, it’s an amazing accomplishment! Just sayin’…So, we‘ve gone a few days now without any new words, but today it looks like we’re hearing a new one…ATONAL. And what a word it is! 6 of the Early Birds were stumped…and make a note, because that’s a first in itself. Atonal. Hmm..Ok,  show of hands…Have you used it recently in idle chatter? In not so idle chatter? Let’s face it Folks…unless you’re into music in some way, shape or form? Atonal? No, not so much…Our other three words? ACCENT’s been seen numerous times over the years, and it loses out to being the most recent by a mere three days. That top honor goes to PIANO, which appeared on 02/23/19, while TRILL hasn’t been seen since wayyyyy back to 11/25/08…2008! That’s a long time ago…and since it’s been 11 long years, we won’t trifle over it being anagrammed exactly the same way again today….but I bet the Longhorns would!

…And a segue back to our Guest characters…A familiar scene to any reader of the comic, we find ourselves today in the home of Loretta and Leroy. Seated at her piano, Loretta’s seen belting out a tune while Leroy stands by…as is his wont…drink in hand. But this time it looks like a cup of coffee. Perhaps the couple has just ended one of their frequent dinner parties, and while coffee’s being served up, Loretta’s serving up another of her impromptu performances…which she’s often guilty of doing? And as the less than melodious tones fill the air, and we read ARRESTING in our question?…We see Leroy, considering it to be a crime, and threatening that he’d like to CALL THE POLICE! Nicely done, David…you can cop to another winner!…And I SING your praises!

And as far as eye candy goes, let’s go with the flying ubiquitous vase of flowers atop Loretta’s piano. Must be due to the…good vibrations!

So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone…and here’s to hoping no marriages out there end up like the Lockhorns...A 3-Ring Circus…Engagement ring, wedding ring…and suffering…But then again, it has been more than 50 years…so who knows? 50 years?…That’s definitely a life sentence! 👫🙋🏻‍♀️

  1. This Jumble is a little jarring. Every single main section word is a musical term, then the cartoon clue brings in something very unmusical, the police, the term “arresting” notwithstanding. There is a band called “The Police”, but no one in that group is named Loretta. Do they mean to call this punk reggae new-wave band, perhaps to accompany Loretta?

    • No, Jim. The Police are very happy with 🎶Roxanne🎶. And besides, Loretta only CELLebrates at home…Have a good one! 👫🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

  2. Good morning. The first three words were a breeze then the fourth Atonal. I don’t think I ever saw that word before. After looking it up I had no idea what it was so I went to the dictionary. A lot of good it did me. I’m still in the dark. I’m sure it will never be in my conversation with my Brooklyn buddies. The cartoon answer was a different story today. No problem with that. Until tomorrow stay well

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn! You got that right! I said the exact same thing in the post…Atonal? Yeah, ok, sure.😉! Have a great day, Paul! 👫🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. The circled letters alone say CALL POLICE and given the differing personalities and wit of the week’s contributors not surprising. It’s been said once before, you need be familiar with the contributors to “decode” their thinking. Not being a Punk Rock or C/W fan, I settled on the solve before the cartoon. Jim, Paul, I’m a Jazz fan, so I’m familiar with alonality. Have a good weekend, till Monday, stay well.

    • Good Morning, Rick. The word THE was given as part of the solution. I’m not sure what you used to solve the puzzle, but I can see how it would be a little fuzzy without the connecting word. Here’s a link to the puzzle from my paper. Have a great day, and thanks for commenting. 🎶🙋🏻‍♀️

  4. Atonal? Give me a break, sorry to say atonal is new to me,and I am a musician,in my spare time, playing the accordion with an accordion band in Peoria,Illinois.Having looked up atonal in the anagram solver, and having the available letters, call the police was a quick puzzle solve.

    • LOL! Good Morning, Professor! And would you believe that I was going to mention you in my post? To say that I was sure you of all people would probably recognize the word? It’s definitely a winner…David probably knew he’d LOCK up a few people with that one! It’s the first time that so many of my Early Bird players were stumped…Have a great day, Prof. And I agree, the solution was a breeze…totally BLACK and WHITE…👫🙋🏻

    • Oh my goodness Chuck. Did you I know that the accordion is the official instrument of San Francisco? A local musician, Tom Torriglia ,got all of his buddies together (known as Those Darn Accordions) in 1990 and they played on the steps of City Hall. He has a website ladyofspain.com. They mostly play in some of the old Italian cafes in North Beach and a couple of German beer halls here in the city. Being of Italian heritage I can assure you they were a staple at many a wedding I attended.

  5. Hi Everyone –
I did a lot of jumbling before backing into atonal . I had to look it up to make sure it was a word. Like Paul, even after reading the definition, I’m still not clear on what means.

    • Good Morning, Caroline. I HEAR ya! There’s so many different definitions out there, that’s it’s almost a CRIME in itself! I guess this is one we just chalk up to whatever…and wonder if we’ll ever HEAR it in a SENTENCE! 😉 Wishing you a wonderful day! 👫🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

      • Wishing you , Angela, and everyone a great day, too. I was so distracted by atonal I neglected to mention how much I liked the drawing of the woman belting out the tune and the fun answer.

      • Thank you Caroline. Yes, Loretta’s pretty convinced she can sing! Bless her heart! But if I were her? I’d probably keep singing too…just to annoy Leroy! 😂 Ah, love! 😉 Enjoy your day, Caroline. Looks like we’re in for a big storm tonight and tomorrow…💦💧🙋🏻‍♀️

  6. 🎹 As he sat down at the PIANO, he was worried that his ACCENT accompanied by his tendency to sound TRILL at times, might make his performance appear to be ATONAL…and he joked to the audience that he hoped they didn’t think to CALL THE POLICE! 🎹

🤦🏻‍♂️The words TRILL and ATONAL immediately came to mind,
He wondered what he saw in her…had his love been that blind?
Her voice grated upon his nerves so badly that he cringed…
Where he once loved her ACCENT, now it all left him unhinged…
Deciding that the first step…the PIANO had to go,
And after that he’d concentrate on her final heave-ho…
‘Cause no matter how he looked at it, he knew she’d never cease
To annoy him…Now he hoped she’d go…and not CALL THE POLICE! 🤦🏻‍♂️

  7. Another vote here for atonal. It was the only word I could come up with and had to check to make sure it was indeed a word. Other than that the other answers were easy. Loved the Lockhorns. Guest Jumble week has been fun. Happy Saturday to all.

    • Good Morning, Betty, yes the week has been fun. But TBT? Taking nothing away from the Guests…I miss Jeff’s drawings. As for Atonal? Just the SOUND of the word is giving me a headache at this point! 😉 David must be truly CELLebrating! Have a great Saturday, Betty. Enjoy! 👫🙋🏻‍♀️

  8. Hi all – I was stumped by the last word, although I liked its jumbling – Betty will tell you that we are definitely NOT LA – and NOT LAA-laa land either. I backed into it from the obvious answer.
I’m surprised so many don’t know ATONAL. I guess I do because of my own “singing” voice! 😂 Angela, I guess none of the Early BIRDs are into Charlie Parker, eh?

I did take NOTE of the fact that the words pertained to the puzzle; nice touch there. And excellent song choice also. I saw the movie with my family and had a great time, although Elvis’ accent did puzzle us sometimes like here – what’s a “Wholesale block”? 😂 (And in his other songs, my mother like hearing “window” pronounced “Whan-da”, and “waitin’ on” instead of “waiting for”. Our Virginia relatives helped our understanding sometimes.)

Have a great day and weekend, everyone!

    • Charlie Parker? Hmm. Maybe the one in Chicago, but it’s really in the WIND. Atonal? Yikes! What a CRIMEing shame! Who knew? And when I told the 6 of them what the word was, 4 of them had the nerve to tell me I was way OFF KEY! The humanity! 😉But Elvis? Hmm…I sat here listening to it a few times this morning,,,but for some strange reason, I really didn’t HEAR any of the words! I wonder why???😂 Have a good one, G. Enjoy! 👫🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

      • 😂😂 I presume he can be atonal, but I don’t really know his work or any other of that type. 🎵”I got no kick against Modern Jazz/Unless they try to play it too darn fast/And lose the beauty of the melody/Until it sounds just like a symphony”🎵 Take care. 🙋🏻‍♂️

      • There’s a bunch of his LP’s in the vault, but now that I think of it, I haven’t played them in a while. And I’m surprised, because you know how I feel about saxophones! 💕 Too much music, too little time! (Got the Chuck Berry 45 too)! 😉 Enjoy, G. 🎶🙋🏻‍♀️

  9. Ok….I regard myself as a reasonably smart person; however, I could not get atonal. I got trill, but I didn’t know what it meant. And, I certainly didn’t get the final answer. Ugh! I looked at the answers in today’s paper and I was aghast! My husband was surprised, too!

    • Hi Carol. What can we say? David did kick it up a notch with Atonal. And if you check the poll results above, you’ll see that you were far from alone in your frustration over not getting the solve…It was a virtual landslide! Thank you for commenting, and here’s to a wonderful day! 🙋🏻‍♀️
