Happy Tuesday, Jumble friends! Today’s puzzle was all about the cartoon, and you had quite a bit to ogle over with fifteen different characters on display. The band, of course, is WILCO and we’ve had the pleasure of seeing them multiple times in the past. If you weren’t quite sure who you were looking at, Jeff drew a caricature of himself wearing a t-shirt of the group and he’s overcome with excitement as the first line of lyrics from “A Shot in the Arm” are being belted out into the microphone. Jeff’s wife, Kathy, also made an appearance in the panel and she too appears to be having quite the fangirl crush as the concert gets underway. We’ll let the Knurek’s rock out for a bit while we take a quick peek at today’s words.

David took a break from adding new words to the game and instead offered up four original anagrams as his challenge. SCENIC has stumped me several times in the past but wasn’t able to do the trick this morning. In fact, none of them gave me any trouble and it was smooth sailing from start to finish. Both ELITE and SCENIC did contain double letters, but David has a habit of keeping them coupled together in the layout which signals me to immediately break them up. If you were stumped on either of these two words, do yourself a favor next time and try writing out the anagram with similar letters in different positions. It just might make your solve a whole lot easier!

There was a third person in the panel standing to the right of the Knurek’s that had very distinct facial features. I’m pretty sure that she’s a friend or relative of Kathy and Jeff as her appearance is atypical of our normal Jumble crew. Her shirt has a logo for “Lounge AX” which was a music venue in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago that closed back in 2000. Maybe she was a fan of the venue and still wears the shirt or this cartoon is from the days of yore and the concert is taking place there. Either way it was a lot of fun to spend a few minutes with our favorite Jumble cartoonist and his wife!

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 11-letters. With HIS already being given to us, I had no problem blind solving this one. Even though I didn’t rely on it for help, I thought the letter layout was rather impressive and it didn’t give anything away. That’s all I’ve got time for today, folks!  Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow.

  1. Good Morning, Mike and Everyone! Have a great day! 🙋🏻‍♀️

🧔🏻 Always wanting to be part of the ELITE group, that hung out at the most SCENIC club in the area, he figured that dating a WOMAN member would up his game…but his chances all SHRUNK as he heard a “No” from each of them…not exactly MUSIC TO HIS EARS…🧔🏻

  2. Hi Mike…The WOMAN you’re referring to in the cartoon is Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy’s wife, Sue Miller. She was co-owner of Lounge AX, from September of 1989, until it closed on January 15th, 2000. Jeff and Sue met in 1991, when she was a talent agent and the booker for Cubby Bear, another alternative music Chicago club, and Jeff was trying to get his band, named Uncle Tupelo at the time, booked into the place. They began dating, married in August of 1995, and have two sons, Spencer and Sam….And a little eye candy? If you look closely, seated in front of Kathy and Jeff? That sure looks like Claire and David! 🙋🏻‍♀️

🎶 Music can lure a WOMAN, impress her at first ‘sight’…
The band sometimes not needing to be one of the ELITE…
Nor does the club need SCENIC be, it’s sometimes quite a dive,
The music and the music men are what makes it alive…
But for the Lounge Ax things went bad…and soon the place was sunk,
New ownership “brought down the Ax”…and their days all but SHRUNK
And where Chicagoans would go, like Jeff amongst his peers…
Now closed it’s doors and there was no more MUSIC TO HIS EARS..🎶

    • That’s interesting, but it doesn’t address the location conundrum. If it is indeed David, which I’m still not certain it is, I would assume that we’re somewhere in Chicago. Oh, and you said seated, but I see everyone standing up and ready to raise the roof on the place!!! Have a good one!

      • Oh, I didn’t take it to be happening in “real” time…,I took it to be at Lounge AX, back in the day…more so because Sue was wearing the shirt. And you’re right, they looked to be sitting to me because they appeared lower, but at Lounge AX, there wouldn’t be seats “ringside” to be found! There’d hardly be seats at all. Or a place to stand for that matter. It was very small, always way overly crowded, and lacked ventilation. The bands featured were forced to be pushed there up against the wall. And yet people loved the place..and when the new ownership abruptly gave them just six weeks to vacate, it was like a funeral in Chicago. There was an article I read early this morning that told about how they’d been harassed for a while over the noise, and the crowds, etc…and how earlier attempts to get them out of the building failed until the new owner came along, but I can’t find it now. I’m going to look again, and if I find it I’ll post the link. It’s an interesting history. 🎶🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. The reputation of the ELITE WOMAN had SHRUNK to a lower level after she made a disparaging remark about the SCENIC school play which was acted out on Veterans Day.

    • Hi Chuck – I posted yesteray’s note about the Canadian hockey teams honoring WWI related vets on another site and got a response from an actual Canadian! Here’s what she said:
“ Likely because Canada lost such a high percentage of their young men during WWI in relation to small population size at the time. We certainly covered a fair bit of WWI history in school as I recall (bit fuzzy recollection as that was a long time ago). If you haven’t seen the movie Passchendaele it is well worth the watch”

      • Thanks for the info, Angela.May the balance of today be as good as, if not better than, any afternoon you’ve ever experienced!!

        • Hi Chuck…The comment was from Steve, not me. Sometimes the thread of replies gets confusing. I didn’t have a conversation with an “actual” 😉 Canadian yesterday, although I did speak with a friendly Frenchman! 😉 And thank you for your thought for today.. I wish you the same. Except for the weather, everything’s going very well…🙋🏻

      • Steve, Needless to say, I mistakenly got your post mixed up with Angela’s. Sorry. I enjoyed reading what the Canadian lady had to say! Thanks.

          • Steve?…The joke about the Frenchman and Hockey?? 🤷🏻‍♀️
It’s Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and a man makes his way to his seat right at center ice. As he sits down, he notices that the seat next to him is empty, so he leans over and asks the man sitting the seat over if someone will be sitting there. “No”, he says, “the seat’s empty.” “That’s incredible”, the man says. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Stanley Cup and not use it?” The neighbor says “Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. We live in France, I flew in alone, and this is the first Stanley Cup we haven’t been to together since we got married back in the late eighties” “Oh” the first man answers… “I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s terrible, really. But couldn’t you find someone else, a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?” The man shakes his head “No. They’re all at the funeral.” 😂🙋🏻‍♀️

            • Funny, in a dark way, but of course that’s what I like. 😂
I actually heard this as a golf foursome that sees a funeral procession go by. One golfer puts his cap over his heart and bows his head until it passes. His partner says how respectful that was, and he says something like, “Well, she deserves it, she was a good wife for 30 years.”

              • Steve…Yeah, the golf one, old too, and funny…I suppose there’s one for every sport…And they’re not really dark, silly actually…But I mentioned it because you said you found my comment “interesting”… I was referring to the joke when I said “friendly Frenchman”. I thought you and I had used the joke before in conversation and you’d get my segue…but I guess it wasn’t you, because I thought for sure you’d come back with a ROTFL! The Lous have teased me for years that I’d probably fall off my heels 👠 running to meet the “Frenchman” and maybe get a shot at scoring that ticket.😂😂 It seems like a lot got lost here in the translation, huh? (No pun intended)! Even tho I speak French! 😂…(Oh, and I was teasing you about the “actual” Canadian! I couldn’t help but think…As compared to what)? 😉 All good, G! 🙋🏻‍♀️

              • I don’t think that was me. But I’m happy to oblige – ROTFL! 😂😂 Or I could have just forgotten it, but I don’t think so.
‘Actual Canadien’ as opposed to an imposter, I guess, or maybe a northern Minnesotan or New Hampshire man – close enough.

  4. *** FOR ANY OF OUR READERS WHO AREN’T ON FACEBOOK, HERE’S A LITTLE GIFT FROM JEFF THAT APPEARED THIS MORNING *** Thanks, Jeff! 🎸🙋🏻‍♀️

“If you ever wonder what “WIlco” is when you see it on t-shirts in the Jumble, well they’re a band. Tonight I’m seeing them. Today, you’re seeing them in the Jumble. Enjoy this video of the cartoon being drawn! https://youtu.be/BJA0-hUDib0

  5. I too have been tripped up by scenic before but not this morning. Easy anagrams and puzzle answer as well. We’re off to a good start this week. Happy Tuesday to all.

  6. Hi all – I always try IC at the end when it’s there, and it didn’t fail me on SCENIC.
Got the answer from the letter layout.
Great artwork today! I laughed at the T-shirt that said “Lounge AX” instead of “acts”, and liked the guy tromping on his foot pedal effects board.
I lived near Lincoln Park in Chicago for a year, but way before what you’re talking about. The clubs I remember were Second City for comedy and The Quiet Knight for music, which had a suit of armor standing next to the stage.

    Have a great day, everyone!

Song from the ceiling at Peet’s (probably appropriate this morning) – “People Are Strange” by The Doors.

“The WOMAN realized that the ELITE SCENIC cruise on their small boat had gone very badly when her husband SHRUNK to the size of an insect in “The Incredible Shrinking Man”.

Completely unnecessary football digression follows: 😂
I’ve seen a lot of great NFL games – the Ken Stabler/Jim Plunkett/John Madden 70’s/80’s Raiders, the entire 80’s/90’s run of 5 Super Bowls with Joe Montana and Steve Young, but I can’t recall seeing a better game than last night’s between the 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. I can’t even be upset that we lost – either team could have won big at any point, both deserved it, and the difference was the genius of Russell Wilson (well, that and THREE passes when the Seahawks had no timeouts! 😱)
So – SF at Seattle on 12/29, then the NFC Championship game – Are you around, John? Let’s do this twice more!
