Happy Wednesday, everyone. Today’s cartoon was rather timely as the mercury starts to drop. It’s 51 degrees out right now so you bet I have the heat on as I’m sitting here typing this. The foliage here in New Hampshire has just about reached peak levels, and some of the extreme Northern areas of the state, especially those near the Canadian border, have already passed their prime. It won’t be long until the pellet stove is running 24/7!

All of our clue words were old friends from middle to late 2018. Early voting in the poll indicates that BURLAP was the one causing most of the trouble, but it’s our most recent word from December of last year and I saw it right away. SUREH stumped me the longest as I mistakenly thought it spelled HURSE. It’s funny when you write out the word you think it spells and it looks completely wrong! DULFI was the only new anagram featured today. PRUBAL was seen on 9/9/17 which made it the freshest while that pesky SUREH showed up on 6/22/13 and clocks in as the oldest.

Today’s cartoon featured a gentleman that is selling firewood. I’m not sure if there is a correct name for this profession, but I’ll go with wood merchant unless someone can correct me. There are two other men in the frame, and one of them has just made a purchase while the other one is just arriving. Does this make our trio the “tree wise men?” I’ll let you be the judge of that!

The merchant gave me a Papa Smurf vibe with his bushy beard and hat. He seems to have finished splitting the logs some time ago as there’s no axe in sight. We see him arranging stove-length pieces into small bundles. Judging by the four finished bundles in the panel, he offers them for sale with each one containing approximately 6 pieces. The dialogue and sentence focused on the weather and staying warm which was a tree-mendous help when it came to the surprise answer.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 9-letters. UP was still on my mind after yesterday’s UP IN THE AIR solution so I figured why not give it another try. BUNDLED came into view immediately upon crossing out the letters to finish this one off. The final solve wasn’t over-elm-ing, but I won’t fir-get it anytime soon!   2. Good morning. My choice for hardest word would be Burlap. I was able to get it once I solved the cartoon answer. That answer was an instant solve. Knowing the 3 letters made it simple to get. I also thought Divine was Endive until I realized it had 2 I s not E s. Until tomorrow stay well.

  3. It wasn’t such a DIVINE moment in the service when an USHER had to stoop down and wipe up the FLUID that had spilt with a piece of BURLAP which he had in his pocket.

  4. ☕️ BUNDLED UP against the cold, she passed a shop displaying coffee beans in BURLAP bags in its’ window…a successful ploy used to USHER customers in with the DIVINE aroma…and she decided some hot FLUID would be perfect right now…☕️

    🎁 Some might think it too early, but to her not hardly so,
    Preparing for the Holidays began a month ago…
    She found the most DIVINE bags of BURLAP tied with string,
    That she would use for all the gifts of wine that she would bring…
    She loved things to flow FLUID-like, with ease, and without stress
    As once again the quest to USHER Christmas in progressed…
    Right now she’s concentrating on finding unique cups…
    And looking for a quirky way to get them BUNDLED UP! 🎁 🙋🏻

  7. Burlap was difficult and slowed me down, the answer was easy but further puzzling. I’ve grown used to answers that are mostly puns or just humorous. What am I missing here? Are firewood purchases called bundles? Fireplaces left me early in life, before middle school, so I’m uninformed regarding anything other than central air. If bundles is the joke, I was left in the cold. Have a super day all!

  8. Yes firewood is bundled for fireplace sale.I found the anagrams and puzzle solution a snap,must be my return home from the grandparents luncheons and the presence of a real live newspaper.

  9. Another easy puzzle today. I’m enjoying it while it lasts but remembering that I was tripped up a couple of times last week so won’t get too complacent. Are you powerless over there in Oakland, Steve?? If so, “bundled up “ has another meaning for you. Take Care.

    • Thanks Betty. Sounds like there’s a good chance they could cut us off at noon, so we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ve got supplies and everything’s charged up.

  10. Hi all – Like HERMIT and IGUANA, I recognized BURLAP from having seen it before. Other than that, no problems.

    Mike, I guess with your weather getting colder, the cartoon struck a cord with you.

    Nice poems, Angela. Mentioning making wreaths out of gathered material brought back some memories, although one of the memories was it being so cold I wouldn’t want to do it again.

I’m surrounded by trees laden with pine cones, and bushes laden with berries, and I enjoy making wreaths and giving them away as gifts.   11. So then fireplace wood is sold in quantities called “bundles”? Got it! Now, “axe” to grind made me smile because wood was originally chopped by axe. Was this an intended pun? If not, I’ve shown ignorance again! Better quit while I’m only two behind….whew!
