Happy Monday, Jumble fans! As we gently roll into a new week, I’ll start by asking a simple question. Were you able to handle all of the anagrams this morning, or did you need a brake? PLACID surely had my gears grinding for a few seconds, perhaps because it was the only bespoke anagram in the group, but it wasn’t long before I managed to get a grip on it. MATCH was a brand new clue word and it leads me to believe that Mr. Hoyt still hasn’t exhausted his list of new material. Lucky us! PLACID was our most recently used word with an in-service date of 2/3/19 while DETECT is the oldest with an appearance on 5/9/18.

We decided to make a slight change to the poll question last week by including the anagram for the bonus answer in the voting. After many positive comments about the addition, we’ve decided to make it a daily feature. It does, however, place our Monday Morning Rewind in a bit of a kerfuffle because almost all of the votes for the most difficult anagram were obviously the longer Jumbles. I’ll continue the Rewind by omitting those anagrams and focus only on the clue words. Without any further preamble, here are the top vote-getters for last week:

With all of the words out of the way, it was time to relax and enjoy today’s cartoon. The setting for this particular piece was the front lawn of a residence somewhere in Jumbleville and it was here that we were greeted by two characters. The sign on the lawn reads “BIKES 4 SALE!” with a small squiggly line under SALE for some added pizzazz. The two boxes on the ground provide a makeshift work surface where we see a middle-aged gentleman making some adjustments to a dropped handlebar style bicycle. The woman doesn’t seem to be interested in a racing bike though, and instead admires the “SCHWINN” labeled one closest to her.

The cartoon was surprisingly packed with fun little details for our viewing pleasure. The garage door was left open and it provided us with a glimpse of its perfectly shaded interior. There was a small section of fence beside the garage and a few squiggles indicating grass. The boxes on the lawn were slightly crushed at the corners due to the weight of the bicycle pressing down on them. A spare wheel and chain litter the ground and give the bicycle “shop” an amateur feel.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 10-letters. The layout was ok, but the grouping of the letters “PLDE” brought PEDDLE instantly to mind. THEM was a simple find in the remaining letters to finish off our first puzzle of the week. Hopefully you weren’t shocked by the quotation marks or two tired to figure it all out.     • Morning, Paul! Today is the first day of school for my little ones so I was busy taking the obligatory photos. With summer vacation over, I can FINALLY settle back into my morning routine. Have a great week!

  2. In order to DETECT the DEPTH of the PLACID lake in the darkness, he had to light a MATCH to check the markings on the pole.

  3. Hey all. Sonny here. Had no problem with this Jumble, kinda easy peezy. The words today were a little hard to put a story line together, but here goes.
    They were standing in line at Fenway Park when She asked him for a MATCH and saw the Depth of his pockets when he reached into his pants. He was a PLACID man that was direct, with a hint of Old Spice She did DETECT. He had 2 tickets for the game, so they headed to the gate. He looked at her and then he said let’s PEDDLE THEM instead. Best I could do on a Monday morning. Sonny.

    • Sonny…It’s a great scenario. 👏🏻👏🏻 The Old Spice is Aces! I struggled a little myself, but here’s what I came up with…Have a good one! 🙋🏻

      ° Having a problem with DEPTH perception, it was sometimes hard for him to MATCH things evenly, and DETECT distances…but blessed with a PLACID nature, he still managed to create beautiful flower arrangements and PEDDLE THEM to make a living…

      ° Always known as a PLACID sort, with reasoning of great DEPTH,
      His personality was warm, with kindness not bereft…
      Because of this his friends all said he’d be the perfect MATCH
      To try out for the Manager of “You Are Such a Catch”…
      Looking to differentiate from dating apps and such,
      Their business planned to DETECT what people wanted much…
      To find someone compatible along the lines of Sports…
      Convinced that time together must have playtime of a sorts…
      So he went out and gathered all those who were fishermen,
      And groomed them well so that he could easily PEDDLE THEM

  4. Hi Mike…Good Morning, Did you notice that Jeff “raised the BAR” so to speak with the bike the woman seems to be choosing? Even though unisex bikes are more the norm now, going by the look of the woman, the way she appears in the FRAME, she seems to be “of a certain age”..(I’m trying to soft-PEDDLE it here)…and I don’t think a bike with that reach and stack would FIT her. I think with all four bikes pictured looking pretty much the same, she may have to switch GEARS and shop elsewhere, Anyway, that’s just my take on it. CYCLE-Ology 101…😉🚴🏻‍♀️🙋🏻

    • Good morning, Angela. I’m sure the resident gearhead would have no problem lowering the saddle, which is shown extended in the cartoon, to a more comfortable position. If her feet still don’t touch the ground after the adjustment, maybe he could hook her up with a tricycle. He looks like a wheelin and dealin kind of guy! Have a great start to your week.

  5. She may have to go with a Tryke .As far as the anagrams and puzzle,they were an easy rainy Monday solve ,but I voted depth as giving me a moment to pause,but ” peddle them” was an obvious puzzle solution.

  7. Hi all – For the words, DETECT took an extra look. For the answer, THEM was obvious. I thought RECYCLE for the first word, but CYCLE was in the dialog, there was no Y, and it didn’t fit . (Other than that it was a good guess).
    Thought about RE something (REWORK, REUSE), but writing down the letters showed PEDDLE quickly.
    Loved the beSPOKE reference Mike.

    Not sure what you’re getting at with the bike Angela. You mean what used to be called “girls’” bikes with the frame bar dropped down (to accommodate riding in skirts, I presume?)

    “The scuba diver tried to find a spot for his group to explore at a DEPTH of 10 meters that would MATCH the PLACID resort onshore, but failed to DETECT the lurking sharks that would put a quick end to his plan”.

    • Hey thanks, Steve! I’ve been reading a lot of Sophie Kinsella lately and her use of British words is slowly taking over my vocabulary.

      Nice of you to slip in re-cycle. I should have used it to describe our three repeats.
