Happy Wednesday, anagram aficionados! Our midweek Jumble featured a brand new clue word, a couple of new anagrams, and a very clever cartoon. The sum of its parts added up to a cryptic final solve that you had to invest a bit of time to figure out. Early voting in the poll shows that KEYPAD was the most difficult anagram to solve and I completely agree. It was the new word that I alluded to earlier and the letter layout by DLH kept it well hidden. We’ve encountered CRASF way back on 6/17/17, but it doesn’t make it the oldest word in the group. That honor belongs to YACHT and I had to sail on back to 1/26/10 to find it.
Today’s panel brings us to a basement where we see a couple of Jumble characters stashing their cash. The cartoon sentence informs us that this particular couple doesn’t trust banks which is some serious old-school thinking. Instead they deposit their dough in tomato cans and place them on a shelf. I originally counted seven, but then I noticed the woman holding another one which brought the total to eight.
On the workbench we see an assortment of tools, a few rolls of coins, and a stack of $100 dollar bills. I wasn’t sure what the object was next to the screwdriver but it might be a roll of money or perhaps a soup can. The shelf held several cans with different labels on them. The cans on the left were peaches and to the right we see tomatoes. The woman is pointing to an urn and it has a small picture of a dogs head and an inscription underneath. High above are two small teddy bears in cases and they must be valuable because they still have their price tags attached. Finishing off the shelf are two boxes at the very bottom and they each have a single piece of tape holding them closed.
The steps leading to the basement were rather small which gave the panel a great sense of dimension. The shading just above the lightbulb gave the space a cavernous feel while the small window provided a hint of natural sunlight. Looking more closely at the window, there appear to be little tufts of grass growing outside while the little circular pull chain indicates that it has a shade on the inside.
The final solve was an anagram consisting of 9-letters and would solve into two words. The three C’s brought CASH instantly to mind leaving me 5-letters to work with. The remaining two C’s made me think that I goofed up somewhere along the way and I checked my clue words to make sure I wrote the correct letters down. With everything looking good but nothing coming to mind, I made a few jumbles of the remaining letters. My second attempt made CACHE quite visible for a stinker of a finish! Today we see a couple enjoying their Golden days…
Distrustful of a local bank, they stash their cash at home,
Under a SCARF, a mattress, or perhaps a statues dome…
This couple’s gone for empty cans, tomatoes the main choice,
We see they’ve saved quite an amount…a reason to rejoice…
Maybe not money for a YACHT, but they might take a cruise,
Vacation seems the main intent for what it will be used.
While he seems quite content feeling that there can be no harm
I hope she’s not in charge of the KEYPAD for the alarm…
Appearing just a tad confused with money and some ash…

Having just purchased a new YACHT and trying it out on the open sea, the millionaire wasn’t CHOOSY about which foods he intended to SCARF down as long as his KEYPAD was close at hand.

Good morning. Again the first word took me the longest to get and when it came time for the cartoon answer that was stalled too. Cache is not a word we see often. The last time I had a cache of something was when I came from from my first leave and got all the kids on my block together and distributed my collection of baseball cards plus others I had over five hundred. Nice use of the words guys. Until tomorrow stay well.

Something was still piquing my INTEREST, so I looked at Urns that hold ashes of the deceased, and I think the woman might be on the MONEY after all. A majority of the urns have doves inscribed on them. I guess the giving out of all my cards to the kids was my attempt at leaving child hood behind and stepping into adulthood. Geez maybe I should’ve taken up psychology for a living. Like others I struggled with keypad which doesn’t seem like it should have been too difficult. I actually came up with cache first and then cash was obvious. It was a good challenge today.

Hi all – The first word wasn’t CHATTY, so YACHT appeared. I guess it helped to have some computer experience for two reasons today – I got CACHE from the letters in the first three words, and then almost couldn’t back into KEYPAD until I finally tried KEY at the beginning.
I got a laugh at work once when we installed some microcomputers that had been made in Berkeley, and I joked that they’d probably hang around asking “Hey man, got any spare cache?”
Yes, I certainly hope that that jar contains cash that they URNED, or she’s in for a big surprise.
I had to laugh at your dove on the urn Angela, because the first thing I saw was the Twitter logo! Other notes on the details; no idea what the round thing is either. It looks like it has a rounded end, like it would cap off a staircase bannister; maybe he hides money in those too. There are also various sized rolls of coins on the table, and, breaking with the fruit theme of the tomato and peach cans, the one in the foreground is a Sherwin-Williams paint can with their “Cover the Earth” logo.

Hey G, Good eye on the Sherman Williams can! That would explain the screwdriver and the mallet..but no easy task completely cleaning out those cans. I guess he was saving money in that one for when they’d PAINT the TOWN RED! 😉 The bannister cap? Tight squeeze…and he don’t look like a TIGHTWAD! But “Larry the Bird” on the urn? No…They’re definitely not the type..They may be old and TWEET, but there’s ashes in there. I guess they kept them at all COSTS. Whoever they belong to obviously URNed the couples’ respect. As for all the tomato cans? Odd, because those covers are completely removed when opened, they don’t fit back on, so I’m not sure what’s the SAUCE for them….But as for CACHE, besides the computer reference, we always used the term back in the day in Brooklyn..The Stash Cache..if you get my drift…😉😎! Oh my goodness Steve, your Sherwin-Williams reference reminded me that many years ago we used to ride the ferry boat between Oakland & San Francisco. There was a neon sign in the shape of a the earth and it gradually was painted in red with… Sherwin – Williams paint and of course the slogan was “Sherwin-Williams paint Cover the Earth”. I think their paint company was located in Oakland. If you google it you can see the old sign.
Do you remember the giant neon Hamm’s beer sign that would show the glass being filled by the bottle?

No, it’s hair. Look to the left of the fold…Two “leafy” sprouts, for lack of a better word. But it’s all realistic, so why shouldn’t it be seen, right? And yes, the paunch does seem to have made a return also. But again, it’s just art imitating life. And body shaming isn’t cool…so…it’s all good 🙋🏻

I do indeed remember the Hamms sign as well as one for Admiral TV & Hills Brothers Coffee. Yes, Angela, thanks, that’s the page I found referencing the Sherwin-Williams paint ad of yore. Fun to know that Sherwin-Williams supplies the paint for the GG Bridge. Don’t think I’ll be painting my house that color any time soon.

Angela,this is for you. I lost the last remaining Aunt on my wife’s side of the family. She was one of seven siblings on my fatherinlaws side. All the girls were the best. They gave us a twelve piece setting from the movie theater for our engagement gift. She had so much knowledge,I hope her daughters took notes in all her conversations. She had such good stories. When my wife was in rehab I use to bring her across the street to visit her aunt in assistance living. Her only request was that we did not put her brother in with her when it was time to find a place for him. Naturally I honored her request. But I did let him know and he was ok with that. I had so much fun years ago when her sister Rose was having a 90th surprise birthday party and I was allowed to bring one guest and I didn’t tell them who I was bringing. It was my sister in law who was married to my wife’s youngest brother that died years ago and was remarried to our boys friend. It was my brotherinlaws request and worked out well. They are married over twenty five years and had one child from their marriage besides the adopted daughter from Honduras from #1. I kept it a secret which I knew would cause a buzz since it was only about a year that my wife passed away. I asked my brotherinlaw if it was ok with him and he was on board. The only thing is that she would not wear my corsage I bought her or let me pick her up which was in Staten Island. I found out that all the cousins were talking about who I was bringing especially since it was so short a time since my wife passed away. My only regret was that we didn’t give the corsage to our aunt instead of it being put in the refrigerator until it died. There will never be an Italian or even a German tradition continuing anymore as all the elders have passed away. I loved the old ways, it bonded families. Of all the christmases, I loved the Italian the best. It was more about food and family that anything else. Italians fought more but that was just the passion that they exuded. She will be missed, God bless her.
Brooklyn…You know you have me crying. How funny that you say you hope your Aunts’ daughters wrote down her conversations…I remember one of the first things I ever told you after we met was that I hoped your kids did that with yours. You paint a pretty picture… I’m sorry for your loss, but it’s obvious you have amazing memories of this woman. And I’m honored that you chose to share some with me. Yes, we Italians know how to do “family”, and Christmas…that’s why I think it’s so important to teach tradition to the kids…Little by little the elders all pass away and unless it’s passed on, it all disappears with them. Thanks for thinking of me, and I’m a firm believer in the reuniting that takes place in the after life…And I’m sure your wife’s Aunt is enjoying her place amongst her siblings as we speak…May she rest in peace.
