Happy Monday, Jumble friends! It’s a new week of puzzles and we have two brand new clue words right off the bat. COVER and FLASHY made their way into the game this morning, but neither of them gave me too much trouble. In fact, all of the jumblings were pretty easy to spot which is typical for the first puzzle of the week. With only two repeats to work with, MERCY was our most recently used word (12/14/16) and QUARTZ was the oldest (10/16/12). It’s always fun to look back at the polls from the prior week and give you a list of the words that you voted for as most difficult. DENTON, CONSHE, NNLOIE, SSULYT, TRYUSD, MTIRAU, and DARTIE were your picks, and I must admit that SSULYT was the only one that I still couldn’t see!

Today’s cartoon was a terrific blend of science and history. We encounter two men in an office and the man standing at the chart appears to be too precisely drawn to be a generic character. The cartoon sentence informs us that his name is Samuel Gertler, and he’s one tough bugger to find a picture of! His patent, on the other hand, was no trouble at all to locate and you can take a look at it HERE.

Mosquito repellent, commonly known as DEET, was the brainchild of Mr. Gertler. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and developed it for use by the Army following their experiences during jungle warfare in World War II. It was first tested as a pesticide on farm fields and would enter military use in 1946. It wasn’t until 1957 that civilians could get their hands on it.

The panel had some mighty fine details, my favorite being the bottle of “bug juice” on the desk. The chart on the wall was broken up into three distinct sections. In the top left we see a small blurb on DEET, followed by a hand with an X above it to indicate an are protected by the chemical, and lastly the chemical composition of the formula.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 11-letters and would solve into two words. It was rather cryptic and didn’t give itself up easily. I paused to think of words associated with insects and finally saw SCRATCH. FROM was easily deciphered from the remaining letters to finish it all off.

I apologize for the slight delay in my write-up as it’s the first “official” day of summer vacation for the kids. My routine is a little screwed up, but it’ll get back on track in no time! Have a marvelous Monday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

  1. Good morning. It was nice of the guys to give us our easy Monday jumble. No problem with the words and when it came to the cartoon answer there was a long pause but it finally came into view. Another clever answer. Yesterday’s Fathers Day was the best ever because all my children and grandchildren were together at my youngest ones house. The peacemaker even to his shock got everybody together. It would have made their mother proud as it did me. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Happy belated Fathers Day, Paul! The weather was a bummer here, but it was awesome being surrounded by my family. We snuggled up and watched a movie and then went out for a dinner with my dad.

Have a great start to your week!!!

      • Angela: thank you for your understanding. I don’t truly remember hating, but frustration abounds!

        • Jamu…I never felt you to be hateful at all, I only replied to your quote..”catalogued me from insouciant thru silly to hateful” ..and took the opportunity to toss a pun in the mix. .No worries, Jamu, we’re good..frustration not withstanding! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  2. Good Morning! Today’s words were quickly solved & the puzzle answer followed. Steve, I wondered why the market had a section of lobster this past Saturday, until I read your blurbs on lobsters. I looked it up & found Saturday was national lobster day. I had purchased one & it became my surprise Father’s day lunch gift. Angela I understand your bewilderment as to my kidding or not. My family has catalogued me from insouciant thru silly to hateful. Please know malintent is never my goal, just a weak attempt at humor.

    • Hi Jamu.Good Morning…Indifference and silliness are never a problem…as long as the hatefulness stays at bay…You bring that…you BITE the dust! ๐Ÿ˜‚ It just takes a while for people to gauge one anotherโ€™s speech patterns and cadence. The written word doesnโ€™t afford a person the luxury of inflection, etc. But itโ€™s all good..I just make sure I read your comments twice before I answer! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Have a good one, Jamu! ๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. Paul: your joy is mine. My family is seldom together, but I did get texts & calls. I was raised non-celebratory, so I even forget my own birthday. Sincerely, I am smiling for you.

  4. Anagrams were a snap but the final solution gave me reason to pause. We also had a Happy Father’s Day/ Birthday Party in Naperville,a good time was had by one and all, with a spirited water balloon fight for the gr kids.

    • It sounds like you really enjoyed yourself this weekend, Chuck, and Iโ€™m glad the weather cooperated! Itโ€™s a sunny day here with temperatures in the 70โ€™s. All my best for a great day and start to your week!!!

  5. Good Morning, Mike. Good Morning, Everyone..Mike..the chart on the wall. Hovering right above the โ€œXโ€? The PEST de resistance? The Mosquito! ๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Good morning, Angela. That sucker was so large that it didnโ€™t deserve mention! I get itchy just thinking about it!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป

      • I donโ€™t know…I think heโ€™s the major DEETail…Without the little BUGGER thereโ€™d be no need for the story at all…Gertler would have had to keep himself BUZZy developing someSTING else! Heโ€™s SWAT makes it all such a SWELL cartoon! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Angela, youโ€™re on a roll with the puns! Did you just get back from the Mosquito Coast? I couldnโ€™t see details or the puzzle in the Chicago Trib; got it from the Orlando paper. Which did you guys use today?

        • Hey G..LOL…Couldn’t see DEET without it? ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Good one! I used Orlando too..The Chi Trib for some reason seemed to SCRATCH the puzzle today. As for the puns, thank you…I could still BUMP it up a notch, but I’ve been on the FLY all morning, so I’m still trying to CATCH up…(note the time on my email)! ๐Ÿ™„ And as for mosquitos…Mosquito Coast? No need to…Out here on Staten Island? They’re famous…They ride in on saddles! Wearing bomber jackets…It’s brutal…๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Good one Mike! And Angela, the funniest thing about โ€œsee Deetโ€ is that I wasnโ€™t making a joke – I just literally meant the word was unreadable! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I often do my best work when Iโ€™m not trying! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐ŸŽตโ€You know the times you impress me most are the times when you donโ€™t try; when you donโ€™t even tryโ€๐ŸŽต ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  6. Good morning. My COVER story was at the MERCY of the board members for being too FLASHY regarding the outcome of profits received at the QUARTZ mine. Nice job Today Mike and Angela, for over a month now I’m unable to check what kind of a National Day is. For some reason it doesn’t let me in the app unless I log in and I’m leary if I have to pay for it. I use to bug the guy everyday with all that info. I keep forgetting to ask my kids to check what’s wrong.

    • Hey Brooklyn…I wondered why you haven’t been mentioning anything, and why you didn’t pick up on me telling you about the Lobsters Saturday…I’m going to check my link and let you know…๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Good job! I enjoy it when you give the words a shot! Nicely done! …I just took a BITE out of it myself….Ok..give me a few minutes, I’m going to check it out for you…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

ยฐ Realizing that they were at the MERCY of the insurance company, after having lost the FLASHY QUARTZ necklace, they started FROM SCRATCH making sure to COVER all the bases, and provide the proper paper work.

ยฐ He wanted to design with QUARTZ but finances were tight
Some other FLASHY minerals available weren’t right…
To COVER his expenses borrowing might do the trick
But being at someone’s MERCY made him feel depressed and sick
He wanted to make it alone and tried hard to detach…
So he decided to start slow and do it all FROM SCRATCH

      • Angela: I’m so ahead of myself I posted a pun yesterday! Let me know if you can read it. Repeat it if you think it’s worth a smile.

        • Jamu…you posted on comment on Saturdayโ€™s page, and I replied to you there…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Paul…Try this link. It’s the one I use. You needn’t sign up for anything. But if you look at the right hand side, there’s a place to enter your email address that will allow them to send you a email with each day’s information if you choose. I don’t know if you did that before, but I don’t see any mention of a charge. I don’t subscribe, I just go in each morning and take a look,. The link should work for you…if it does, bookmark it and save it so that you can have it for the future…
Let me know if it works..๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  7. Easy puzzle today. No problem with the words or cartoon solution as appears was the case for the rest of you. Hope all of you have a good Monday.

  8. Pretty difficult to disguise quartz! Final solve took me a bit longer than it should have, though.

  9. Hi all – I did have trouble with one word today – I was going to offer to go HALF-SY with someone to get it, but then wrote FALSHY and saw FLASHY. Didnโ€™t know what the answer was going for, but saw it when I wrote the letters.

Have a great day, everyone! Hope the mosquitos leave you alone.

    • PS – โ€œHer COVER story to get MERCY from the diamond thieves was that her ring was only FLASHY QUARTZโ€.

      • ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Bravo! ..And then to further appease them, she made a “big salad” with a lot of CARATS! ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

        • Thatโ€™s what she gets for DRESSING to the nines in the wrong neighborhood in her SALAD days. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

          • Yea, poor girl…LETTUCE pray..KALE Mary, full of KRESS…๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  10. Angela: I’m so ahead of myself I posted a pun yesterday! Let me know if you can read it. Repeat it if you think it’s worth a smile.

  11. Angela: the pun was about the many programs about flies on ” Mosquito.Net” (now you see what my family has endured)

    • Yes, I know…and I replied to it. But because you posted it on Saturday’s page, so is my reply. And Steve commented on it also…If you arrow back from the word PREVIOUS at top right, you can see Saturday’s page, and the comments at the bottom of the page…I made mention that the show ‘Sucked’…and got ‘Under my skin’…both in reference to mosquitos…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  12. I felt like a real dummy because I couldn’t get this. It was diabolical!

    • Donโ€™t feel bad, Lee! Jeff added a lot of DEETail, but David was especially crafty with the letter layout and it stumped quite a few of us. See you tomorrow!!!

  13. Angela: Saw your instruction went back, saw my entry, yours below mine, Steve’s below yours. Both fewer words & both better than mine! Guys, try to have mercy on a beginner (though I did laugh) I said it before, you guys are GREAAAAAAT!!!

    • HI Jamu. I’m glad you found it. But speaking for myself, please…no great..Have a good night…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • LOL! Well at least you scratched it! Good Morning, Al. Sorry the answer was BUGGING you.๐Ÿ˜‰ For a second there, I wasnโ€™t sure where you were going with this….until I realized it was Mondayโ€™s puzzle. Itโ€™s hard keeping track of it all! Have a great day, and weโ€™d love to have you comment again…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป
