Good Morning, Everyone!      🐿  TRICKS OF THE TRADE 🐿

🎶TALK to me…TALK to me…Ooo…I love the things you say, TALK to me…TALK to me…In your own sweet gentle way…🎶Talk To Me” – Little Willie John  1958     https://tinyurl.com/y5doenag

🐿 Old Samuel was a busy man, his talents quite extensive,
I would imagine he’d need be…his trips all sound expensive…
A man with what seems like a Golden Touch of 18 KARAT
His many occupations proved he was very disparate…
He knew just how to FRAME a map, and how to navigate
Or he’d DIVERT to drafting…with a STYLUS and a slate..
A man who lived a rounded life…at not much did he balk…
Next time I don a fur I may think of his FUR TRADE TALKS! 🐿

As our week’s drawing to a close, it SEAMS we’re still seeing new words from David…and he’s sure been giving us the what FUR! I had no luck locating either KARAT or STYLUS in the Archives…and I was a little surprised at the absence of KaratI thought FUR sure we’d seen it in the past. Anyway, as FUR as our other two words go: FRAME, came in on 08/21/18, while DIVERT goes way back to 08/15/11….And it was Karat that got under the SKIN of three of the Early Birds. Ok, with that all MAPPED out, let’s move on to our cartoon….

Today, the Jumble gives us SAMUEL de CHAMPLAIN, a French colonist, navigator, cartographer, draftsman, soldier, explorer, geographer, ethnologist, diplomat and chronicler. Phew! FUR real? DAM, this was one busy man. Busy as a BEAVER, I’d sayAnyway, we’ve landed in QUEBEC. Ah, Quebec…Home of Poutine! My head’s been spinning all morning just thinking about the savory delight! FRENCH fries and cheese curds smothered in brown gravy…The aroma, the taste…the…Oh, sorry…FURgive me..I went a little off TRACK there…Ok, Where was I? Oh, yes, our cartoon. The year, 1608, and the Frenchman Monsieur de Champlain has established the first French settlement in the Canadian territory, and founded the city of  Quebec. Forming trade partnerships with the native tribes, and starting with one TRADING Post, he turned it into a booming Trading Fort settlement run by French companies. And with the land being plentiful with Beavers, the fur trade thrived, eventually expanding into a massive network that helped shape “New France’s” economy. And here we see the beginning… Mr de Champlain, welcoming NEGOTIATIONS, a French soldier, a member of his brigade of scouts, probably the FURman, and an Algonquin Indian bringing his beaver furs to trade. So, in answer to our question…Quebec was the perfect location…”FUR” TRADE TALKS! Good one, David! You can sure PELT them out!

Eye candy? With the panel shaded mostly in brown, the building in the background, in black and white is pretty FORTright. A flag’s shown on a flagpole. Sam and our soldier are dressed in black, and a pile of hides is shown on the ground between them. The rifle–toting huntsman wears a brown FUR jacket and hat. And our native TRADER, arriving in a yellow canoeis clad in dark taupe, with a single red feather peeking from the back of his furry headgear. He’s wearing a necklace of beads, but their colors are enTRAPPED in the shading of his outfit. But what enTRAPtured me this morning? If you look real closely? The hides lying in the canoe? There’s a beaver tail sticking out from the pile! HA! LEAVE IT TO BEAVER…I mean Jeff! Now that’s a deTAIL! (And if you’re ever in Canada, try a Beaver Tail pastry...It gives Poutine a run for its money) So, There you have it, Folks..Done! Have a great day, Everyone!…And remember…Always stay on the right TRACK in life, and you’ll never feel enTRAPPED! 🐿🙋🏻

  1. Hi Everyone –
Thanks for all the info and laughs, Angela and Jamu.
Today was quite a workout for me. For some reason, i wrote down stark as my first word. I eventually found my mistake and had to check the dictionary to make sure KARAT was a word, since I’m not familiar with that spelling. Also struggled with STYLUS.

    • Hi Caroline. Good Morning…Is it ok if I just direct you above to the reply I left for Jamu? Save me some typing? 😂 I only ask because I have something else to show you. And I have a feeling that KARAT will be getting under everyones SKIN today, as it did 3 of my veteran Jumble Early Birds this morning..I had a link for the KARAT-CARAT dilemma, but I had a problem this morning getting the links to take…But here it is….
A CARAT is a unit of weight for diamonds and other gemstones. One carat equals 200 milligrams (0.200 grams). … A KARAT when used with gold, is a unit of purity– 24-Katat gold is pure gold, but usually you mix gold with a metal like copper or silver to make jewelry (because pure gold is too soft)…The things we learn on this blog, huh? 😂 And as for STYLUS? If you’re keeping TRACK of the poll numbers, you’ll see it’s getting FUR ahead…So, Phew! That’s it…But as we’ve agreed betore, Caroline…a little challenge every once in a while is welcomed….Oh…before I go? The Poutine? I thought of you immediately…Well, right after the Poutine that is! ?..And you know what I’m thinking of making tonight! 🍟🍟 LOL! Have a great day, Caroline! 🐿🙋🏻

      • Thanks, Angela. I did notice your mention of poutine, and it had me wanting to get some soon. I’m impressed that you actually make the dish. Is that a chipmunk emoji? I don’t think I’ve mentioned it, but I’m always watching them run around the backyard as I sit at the computer.

        • YW, Caroline. And yes, I make it. And I’m definitely doing so tonight. But you shouldn’t be that impressed…Does it come out as good as what I’ve had in Quebec? HA! ..No. But it satisfies the urge…and that’s good enough for me! 😂😂 As FUR the emoji..it’s a squirrel…Thet don’t have a BEAVER, so I figured I’d just fake it…It’s FURry! (and you know how I hate squirrels)! …And no, you haven’t mentioned the chipmunks…but want to laugh? I do a lot of my writing with the audio text feature…and if you say “Chipmunk” to any Apple product, it gives you the squirrel! You say Beaver? Zilch! 😂🙋🏻

  2. I also was thinking carat rather than karat, and was also stumped momentarily on frame, thinking farmer instead. So it goes ,fur and trade were obvious solutions ,followed by talks rather than stalk.

    • Good Morning, Professor….KARAT? …By now it’s got a familiar RING to it! And here you’re the third person to mention STALK…As in stalking an animal…I never considered the word at all…as I said I thought TALKS after seeing NEGOTIATIONS…and I just ran with it…But good observation fellow HUNTERS! Wishing you a great day, Prof! Enjoy! 🐿🙋🏻

  3. Hi all – Much like everyone else, checked the spelling of KARAT and almost had to back into STYLUS but saw it at the last second. Then I also figured FUR was in quotes, tried TRADE and got TALKS from what was left.

My favorite detail was the stitching on the side of the canoe, I guess indicating that it was made of birch panels joined together.

Have a great day, everyone! We’re enjoying relief from our historic heatwave. My weather app says it’s 60 in San Francisco and New York and 62 in Oakland. Ahhhh!

Excellent sleuthing knowledge about CARAT and KARAT Angela. Positively scientific; kudos! Although you did cause me to have to rewrite my sentence – he was originally a diamond cutter in Antwerp! 😂

“When the goldsmith tapped his cutting apparatus, the FRAME broke, causing the STYLUS to DIVERT from its intended path and ruining the 24-KARAT ring”.

    • 👏🏻👏🏻 🎶 RING A DING DING..RING A DING DING..RING A DING DING🎶 Nice…Have a good one G…And thanks…But which of the KARATs to CHEWS? You know that’s why God gave us Google…😉🙋🏻

° Needing more evidence before he could FRAME his employee for stealing the Raccoon coats, he decided to DIVERT his attention by placing a STYLUS or two around his desk…and it proved to be an 24-KARAT gold idea…as he distractedly played with one while making a call regarding his FUR TRADE TALKS…

° He promised her 24 KARATs…He thought she would settle for less,
But this girl was not one to DIVERT…he only caused more of a mess…
He thought that by taking a STYLUS that maybe he could try and alter
The etching that showed on the bracelet…but there was no fooling her…
She wanted to FRAME him for libel, and tell him to just take a walk…
But instead she just took him shopping, and she started on some FUR TRADE TALKS…

  4. You mean there’s more than one way to SKIN a CARAT? “Ehhh, what’s up, doc?”

  5. Good afternoon. Late entry as I had to get out early again. Like a lot of us,I actually had the spelling of the 1st and last word but didn’t realize it until I checked. The cartoon answer took a little time but solved the clever answer. Loved you song choice Angela. Don’t think you could have found a better song to represent the theme. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Hey Brooklyn…Good Evening…Looks like those 2 words gave everybody a run for their money today…Nice challenge. Thanks for the Shout Out, and I knew you’d appreciate the music. It’s such a great song, and I listen to it all the time. It’s definitely up there on my all time favorite list…Hope you had a good day, Brooklyn…and here’s to a great night! 🍷🙋🏻
