SIRKB = BRISK

NPDUE = UPEND

QIRMUS = SQUIRM

CONSHE = CHOSEN

CARTOON ANSWER:

THE UNDERWATER SCIENCE TEAM WON A GRANT THANKS TO THEIR GREAT – – –

BISUNSIMOS = SUB-MISSION”

Happy Tuesday, Jumble geniuses! Surprise surprise, we have another new clue word this morning. DLH wriggled SQUIRM into the puzzle today, but the Q at the front of the layout made it an instant solve. The remaining three words were brand new anagrams. I thought UPEND might be my choice for the most difficult one, but that all changed when I found myself struggling with CONSHE. Looking back in the archives, the last time we saw it was on 2/7/17 and it caused quite a stir. The anagram was NOCHES which is the Spanish word for nights. It was equally as difficult this morning, but it came into view after a minute or two. With all of my ducks in a row, I meandered my way over to the cartoon.

The first thing that caught my eye was the staggering amount of detail in today’s panel. We see three Jumble characters having a meeting on a fishing pier and they appear to be looking at a treasure map. The cartoon sentence identified the group as an “underwater science team” and the dialogue informs us that they’ve just received a grant.

The diagram of the submarine was rather large and took up almost one quarter of the panel. The lack of the word was what really caught my attention and I had the feeling that it might be our first big clue. What I first thought was a treasure map ended up being a drawing labeled “sunken ships”. On the drawing we see 10-X’s which represent spots where the team believes a ship may have sunk.

Looking at the submarine drawing once more, we see the craft carefully hoisting up a sailboat. Do you remember seeing all of those half-sinking sailboats in cartoons that had a water feature? Well it looks like we now know their fate! My favorite detail were the seagulls in the top left of the cartoon. The fact that they were so small gave the (wonderfully) crowded panel some much needed dimension.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 9-letters. The layout kept the answer cryptic, but the visual clue of the submarine all but solved it for me. I thought the answer was rather clever and the cartoon added the necessary support to pull it off. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

  1. Up early for early league golf,finally not raining on a Tuesday.As far as the puzzle,no problem with the anagrams,and the puzzle was pretty much an obvious blind solve.

  2. Good Morning, Mike. Good Morning, Everyone! These anagrams were easily UNDERstood! Have a great day! 🙋🏻

    ° He was so sorry that he’d CHOSEN this route, because what was usually a BRISK ten minute walk, was now horribly impeded…not only did a truck UPEND, but the foolish drivers who tried to SQUIRM by left everyone in a state of inert SUBMISSION…

    ° He usually was very BRISK, not one to UPEND things,
    When he had CHOSEN to move on…he left behind his fling…
    But this time he had met his match, this woman made him SQUIRM…
    She told him she wanted no ties…and she was definitely firm.
    It looks like Mr. One and Done is now out of commission…
    This woman had just what it took to bring him to SUBMISSION!

  3. My day was brisk but upended in the evening as I was forced to squirm at the chosen.

    • At the end last night, I think I saw Curry mouth the phrase ‘Hey Jamu, CHEW on THIS!” 😂😂 I hope you know I’m only kidding, and that you don’t mind. I did indeed think we were completely dead during the Raptor’s run and Steph missing all those 3’s, but he sure has a way of making them when they count. One last game at Oracle!

      • I’m with you, Steve. No matter what the rest of the folks think, the Warriors really personify team work in my opinion and they’re a class act whether they win or lose. Would love to see one more win at Roaracle tomorrow night as well as one last chance for you to sweep the confetti off your porch.

        • Hi Betty! Hope you’re surviving the heatwave ok! They say much cooler tomorrow, but that’s what they said yesterday and it’s still 96° right now. 🙋🏻‍♂️

  4. After having been CHOSEN for the overseas assignment, my older brother started to SQUIRM a bit and decided to go for a BRISK walk to mull over how this new job might UPEND his entire future.

  5. Here’s my outlAUK on the eye candy…I’ve dubbed our sole little feathered friend Jonathan Livingston SEAGULL, https://tinyurl.com/yy7vewaa since he’s just hanging BACH, perched there looking so STUMPed. Jonathan was a loner, always wanting more out of life…And from the look on his face he’s probably wondering “WATER these people all CARPing about”? …And am I the only thinking the “BATTLESHIP” game looking at that grid of “SUNKEN SHIPS”? Just a FLEETing thought…But to really get to the BOTTOM of things? The detail with the most SUBstance today? Sitting there on the desk…It’s a model of an actual YELLOW SUBMARINE! (Check out the colorized version…It’s Yellow)! https://tinyurl.com/yxnhd7dw Now nothing can BEAT(LES) that! Have a great day, Everyone! CARPe diem…SEAS the day! 🙋🏻

  6. SUBtext: Sorry, I failed to give a Shout Out to David and his cleverness with “SUB-MISSION”…A mission…on a SUB! What mad sKEELS, David…You’re KNOT one to ever let us DOWN! Kudos! 👏🏻👏🏻🙋🏻

  7. Hi all – Putting UP together showed UPEND. I figured the last word was probably going to contain SH, SC or CH, but as soon as I wrote down the last combo I saw it was the CHOSEN one.
    For the answer, I thought that if the guy had written an innovative computer program to control his vessel, it could have been a great “SUB-ROUTINE”, which also fit, but a glance at the other letters showed MISSION.

    Have a great day, everyone!

    Nice observation on these being the sunken Jumble sailboats, Mike.

    Angela, the seagull I thought of was the one in the movie “Last Summer”, and Barbara Hershey’s short-lived adopted last name.

    As soon as I saw the map on the table, instead of “Battleship”, I once again thought:
    🎵”Peridots and periwinkle blue medallions
    Gilded galleons spilled across the ocean floor
    Treasure somewhere in the sea and he will find where
    Never mind their questions there’s no answer for”🎵 – Joni Mitchell, “The Dawntreader”. This is an astonishing performance that I’d never seen before, live from the CBC, apparently on New Year’s Eve, 1967:

    “The BRISK sell-off would UPEND the CHOSEN firm’s IPO and cause the investors to SQUIRM.”

    • …You thought that because you STILL have a crush on Barbara Hershey! …😂💃🏻🙋🏻

    • The contour lines on the map were such a cool addition, Steve. I wasn’t sure what they stood for at first. I found an article online that described how they indicate elevation changes on the seabed. Neat stuff, but not as interesting as your sentence! 😎👍🏻

  8. In my newspaper the cartoon background was too dark to read the black text so I missed some of the clue.

    • That’s very disappointing, Susan. The problem with my newspaper is that the background is usually too light (which might be a cost-saving measure). I hope you were able to solve it despite the setback. 🙂
