Happy Tuesday, Jumble geniuses! Surprise surprise, we have another new clue word this morning. DLH wriggled SQUIRM into the puzzle today, but the Q at the front of the layout made it an instant solve. The remaining three words were brand new anagrams. I thought UPEND might be my choice for the most difficult one, but that all changed when I found myself struggling with CONSHE. Looking back in the archives, the last time we saw it was on 2/7/17 and it caused quite a stir. The anagram was NOCHES which is the Spanish word for nights. It was equally as difficult this morning, but it came into view after a minute or two. With all of my ducks in a row, I meandered my way over to the cartoon.
The first thing that caught my eye was the staggering amount of detail in today’s panel. We see three Jumble characters having a meeting on a fishing pier and they appear to be looking at a treasure map. The cartoon sentence identified the group as an “underwater science team” and the dialogue informs us that they’ve just received a grant.
The diagram of the submarine was rather large and took up almost one quarter of the panel. The lack of the word was what really caught my attention and I had the feeling that it might be our first big clue. What I first thought was a treasure map ended up being a drawing labeled “sunken ships”. On the drawing we see 10-X’s which represent spots where the team believes a ship may have sunk.
Looking at the submarine drawing once more, we see the craft carefully hoisting up a sailboat. Do you remember seeing all of those half-sinking sailboats in cartoons that had a water feature? Well it looks like we now know their fate! My favorite detail were the seagulls in the top left of the cartoon. The fact that they were so small gave the (wonderfully) crowded panel some much needed dimension.
The final solve was an anagram consisting of 9-letters. The layout kept the answer cryptic, but the visual clue of the submarine all but solved it for me. I thought the answer was rather clever and the cartoon added the necessary support to pull it off. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

After having been CHOSEN for the overseas assignment, my older brother started to SQUIRM a bit and decided to go for a BRISK walk to mull over how this new job might UPEND his entire future.

Hi all – Putting UP together showed UPEND. I figured the last word was probably going to contain SH, SC or CH, but as soon as I wrote down the last combo I saw it was the CHOSEN one.
For the answer, I thought that if the guy had written an innovative computer program to control his vessel, it could have been a great “SUB-ROUTINE”, which also fit, but a glance at the other letters showed MISSION.

The contour lines on the map were such a cool addition, Steve. I wasn’t sure what they stood for at first. I found an article online that described how they indicate elevation changes on the seabed. Neat stuff, but not as interesting as your sentence! 😎👍🏻

In my newspaper the cartoon background was too dark to read the black text so I missed some of the clue.
That’s very disappointing, Susan. The problem with my newspaper is that the background is usually too light (which might be a cost-saving measure). I hope you were able to solve it despite the setback. 🙂
